This regulatory blueprint arrives at a sensitive time, just as computing power surges, promising myriad benefits. The EU's approach recognizes that successful AI integration isn't just about technical compliance — it demands a cultural metamorphosis.
The phenomenon of cognitive offloading — our natural tendency to outsource mental tasks to external tools — is accelerating quickly. This trend is risky amid AI.
While algorithmic tools can boost productivity and quality, with research showing that well managed interactions with generative AI systems increase both the quantity and quality of human labor, they also tend to erode our critical thinking skills by encouraging us to bypass mental effort.

The outcome isn't replacement, but true complementarity — each partner bringing unique strengths to achieve results neither could achieve alone. Similarly, when accomplished jazz musicians collaborate with generative AI to compose new pieces, the algorithm's vast knowledge of harmonic possibilities, combined with the musician's emotional intuition, creates symphonies beyond what either could achieve independently. The computational system suggests pathways traditional training might miss, while human artistry steers the algorithm towards emotionally resonant territory it could never identify alone.
This evolving partnership demands what we call double literacy — fluency in both human and algorithmic domains, individually and collectively. At the individual level, algorithmic literacy means not just knowing how to prompt an AI, but understanding its underlying logic, limitations, biases, and best uses. Human literacy involves continuously developing our unique human capacities: creativity, empathy, ethical reasoning, and the ability to ask truly meaningful questions.
Ironically understanding artificial intelligence starts by developing a more nuanced comprehension of natural intelligence. Insights from cognitive psychology can help educators and trainers better utilize AI-powered tools to facilitate learning, rather than letting them replace essential human cognitive processes.
At the organizational level, such double literacy translates into institutional cultures that gracefully navigate the tension between efficiency and emotional safety, creativity and compassion, between delegating tasks and curating cognitive engagement. Gallup's research into algorithmic culture readiness looks underscores that successful AI integration demands a mindset transformation across every part of an organization.
At the heart of effective human-machine collaboration lies trust calibration — the delicate balance between trust in AI systems and healthy skepticism. The question is to deliberately manage the risk of over-reliance on algorithms while creating intuitive hybrid interfaces that allow for seamless human-human and human-machine interaction.
Over-reliance comes from blindly accepting AI recommendations; it leads to avoidable errors. Yet, under-reliance means missing out on the potential of genuine enhancements. It requires new management practices and fresh cultural norms around human to human and human-machine interaction. Ultimately the ongoing tech transition requires hybrid humanistic leadership. Amazon's bleak job update exposes major AI warning for Aussie workers: 'Will reduce'
Thousands of office workers at Amazon and Microsoft could soon be without a job as the two companies invest more heavily in artificial intelligence and outsourcing. Major warnings have been issued in recent months about how AI could create high levels of unemployment in Australia and around the world. Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy wrote a memo to staff that cautioned this tech takeover would likely hit its workforce in the coming years. But he suggested that some who lose their jobs could find new roles in other sectors. 'As we roll out more generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,' he said. Australia's productivity commissioner Danielle Wood isn't convinced the AI bloodbath will be that bad. Still, she didn't deny the workforce matrix we're familiar with now will inevitably go through some big changes. 'Am I going to sit here and say, 'No jobs are going to go?' No, clearly not. There will be some impacts," she told the ABC. She hoped AI would allow people to have more time for "the uniquely human parts of jobs". The Prime Minister has announced a huge summit in August a bid to fix the country's lagging productivity. The government believes AI could be a game-changer in this realm and is keen to explore ways the technology can be deployed across multiple sectors. While the ACTU is on board with AI in certain scenarios, it wants assurances for workers' rights. 'To achieve good adoption of AI, Australia needs responsible regulation which both protects Australian workers and Australian industries from malicious use and theft by overseas big tech," ACTU secretary Sally McManus said. The union is pushing for workers to have the right to refuse to use AI in fields where it would be 'inappropriate or carry undue risk', like in medical decision-making. Finance Sector Union national secretary Julia Angrisano, who has been carefully watching Australia's banking industry adopt new tech, said the roundtable will be a good opportunity to set up some ground rules. 'AI is a fundamental and growing part of the finance sector, but this growth is happening in an almost entirely unregulated and uncontrolled way,' she said. 'The economic benefits and productivity gains of AI must flow on to workers, and not just improve the profits of banks and major companies.' Australian Services Union national secretary Emeline Gaske went as far as saying workers should be 'fairly compensated' for using AI. 'AI will undoubtedly reshape the way we work, but we can't lose sight of the people behind the progress,' she said. AI users have to choose between accuracy or sustainability

But that access comes with one cost: the environment. In a new study, German researchers tested 14 large language models (LLMs) of various sizes from leading developers such as Meta, Alibaba, and others. Each model answered 1,000 difficult academic questions spanning topics from world history to advanced mathematics. The tests ran on a powerful, energy-intensive NVIDIA A100 GPU, using a specialized framework to precisely measure electricity consumption per answer. This data was then converted into carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, providing a clear comparison of each model's environmental impact. The researchers found that many LLMs are far more powerful than needed for everyday queries. Smaller, less energy-hungry models can answer many factual questions just as well. The carbon and water footprints of a single prompt vary dramatically depending on model size and task type. Prompts requiring reasoning, which force models to 'think aloud,' are especially polluting because they generate many more tokens. One model, Cogito, topped the accuracy table—answering nearly 85% of questions correctly—but produced three times more emissions than similar-sized models, highlighting a trade-off rarely visible to AI developers or users. (Cogito did not respond to a request for comment.) Tech accounts for half of US M&A spending so far in 2025
There has been less dealmaking in 2025 than there was the year prior, but the 2025 deals total more than the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the first six months of 2024. Yahoo Finance Senior Banking Reporter David Hollerith outlines what this signals about the dealmaking landscape and what's to come in the second half of the year. With the first half of the year coming to a close, we're taking a look at the M&A landscape. New data from PWC highlight that about 30% of companies are pausing or revisiting pending deals due to tariffs. We're bringing in Yahoo Finance banking reporter, David Hollerith. David. Hey Josh. So, um, you know, it's kind of a mixed picture with the deals market right now. We're seeing that the number of deals year to date compared to last year is actually, um, down, but total volume or in dollar amount, the amount of dollars going into deals so far this year is actually up. So it's fairly confusing, and we have two big trends that are sort of shaping this market. The first is tariffs or sort of companies' reaction to tariffs, and that goes back to the PWC stat that you just put out, um, which is just that, um, you know, they're having to rethink their models and uh, you know, whether or not they can actually, um, do a deal without, uh, you know, taking some sort of impact from tariffs that they didn't think. And that's just if they're in an industry that might be sort of resistant to tariffs or exposed to tariffs, excuse me. Um, and then we have AI, and AI is a huge one, obviously, because, um, tech at this point makes up 50% of, uh, uh, US M&A so far year to date, and that's up from about 41% from, uh, the same period last year. And within tech, um, AI is kind of taking over in these few big deals that we're seeing. Um, OpenAI, uh, the investment from, uh, SoftBank, as well as, uh, Salesforce, um, purchasing Informatica, uh, Meta's, uh, purchase of Scale AI. I could sort of go on with that. But so it's a market where a lot of the smaller players aren't really making decisions yet, but it looks not too bad in dollar amount just because we've seen all these big players do these AI plays effectively.
