NFL rookie denied by another legend after being slammed by Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman for 'crazy' request

Daily Mail04-05-2025

The hits just keep on coming for New York Giants rookie Abdul Carter as he continues his search for a number to wear in his first NFL season.
Carter, the Giants third overall pick, was denied the opportunity to wear No. 56 last week when the NFL legend who wore it before him turned down his request.
Now, he won't be able to wear the same number he had in college after the family of another Giants legend said no.
The number 11 at Penn State is a heralded number that has been worn only five times since 1997. Notable wearers of that jersey in that period include LaVar Arrington, NaVorro Bowman, Micah Parsons, and Carter.
So after being denied No. 56, Carter considered wearing the No. 11 in the NFL as well.
But he hit a roadblock there too. No. 11 has also been retired in honor of former quarterback Phil Simms.
While Simms said that he'd be fine with Carter wearing the number, Simms' family reportedly out-voted him.
It comes after Hall-of-Famer Lawrence Taylor denied the request to wear his retired No. 56.
That request was mocked on the 'Dudes on Dudes' podcast, hosted by former New England Patriots stars Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman.
The two Super Bowl winners were shocked that Carter would even consider asking for the number of the Giants legend.
'Was he serious asking for LT's number?,' Gronkowski remarked. 'Yeah, you were a high draft pick, but LT is an absolute legend.
'The best to do it. One of the best defenders of all time. Like, you gotta prove yourself.
'That's crazy. Just asking for LT's number. And I'm glad that LT shut him down like that.'
Edelman agreed: 'That was such a LT response. "Go make your own freaking number, kid."'
The receiver continued: 'Can we read a room? And it's not even the room, it's the football galaxy. The fact that he even asked, that's crazy to me. Maybe he'll go make another one.
'And people say, oh, the 11 thing. But they give everyone 11 at Penn State. No one ever puts on the 56.'
Carter joked about his predicament with a post to X: 'Damn at this point imma be out there with just my last name on my jersey, no number.'

Ravens' John Harbaugh: Cutting Justin Tucker was 'complex decision'

Harbaugh acknowledged releasing Tucker came at the end of "a complex decision-making process" but continued to insist it was a football decision. "I mean, you're talking about arguably the best kicker in the history of the game," Harbaugh told reporters after Baltimore's second OTA session of the offseason. "And like we said, it's multi-layered, it's complicated. But in the end, it all comes back to what you have to do to get ready for your team to play the first game." "I think if you step back and you take a look at all the issues and all the ramifications, you can understand that we've got to get our football team ready and we've got to have a kicker ready to go," Harbaugh added. "And that was the move that we decided to make. So in that sense, it's a football decision." Tucker spent 13 total seasons as the Ravens' top kicker after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He was named an All-Pro first teamer five times during his career and wrapped up his time in Baltimore having made an NFL-record 89.103% of his field goal attempts. The Ravens are having two rookies - Tyler Loop and John Hoyland - compete to replace Tucker. Loop holds the distinction of being the first kicker ever drafted by the Ravens after they spent a sixth-round pick on the Arizona product. Meanwhile, Hoyland signed as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming. Harbaugh - who spent nine seasons as the special teams coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1998 to 2006 before becoming Baltimore's coach in 2008 - noted the Ravens are planning "to spend all of our focus and our time to get these kickers ready." "We've got a competition going on and [we've got to] get these guys ready to make kicks," Harbaugh said. "So that's all I'm thinking about. From my perspective, it's like, 'We have to have a kicker out there making kicks,' and what's the best way to get that done?"

Tom Brady gets Lyndon Dykes fired up for Scotland resurgence as NFL legend 'more than just a face' at Birmingham

Dykes says Brady has been a presence around Birmingham City and is 'more than just a face' at the club Lyndon Dykes has revealed how NFL legend Tom Brady can help him return fit and firing for Scotland when World Cup qualifying kicks off. The Birmingham City striker's domestic season ended on February 22 with a calf injury against Reading. ‌ Dykes was desperate to work his way back via Scotland's June friendlies. But he's missed out on the action against Iceland and Liechtenstein and will need to wait until autumn to join up with Steve Clarke 's squad. ‌ Dykes insists he'll have the best of care for that bid thanks to a seven-time Super Bowl winner. Brady is a shareholder in the Blues as well as a minority owner with NFL franchise Las Vegas Raiders. The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is heavily engaged in improving the sports performance side at City. And Dykes said: 'It's great having someone like that who has been so successful in his own sport. ‌ 'He does pop in and out and I've met him a couple of times. He brings a different mentality and knowledge to certain things. 'He's got a lot of input, he's not just a face. He's around the place and he's got ideas about what he wants. ‌ 'Some of the stuff they've brought to the club has been really good, like the medical department. He's brought a different outlook to the physio room, with his own head of medicine and the way they try to do things so that there are fewer injuries. 'He's very inspirational. Going forward, I feel it's going to be very successful with him and the owners there, Tom Wagner and the Knighthead group. 'I actually do like the Raiders but I didn't really have an NFL team as such. Hopefully he can get me on an NFL pitch because I think I could be all right at that as well! I'd have to put a bit more muscle on because some of those boys are massive.' ‌ Dykes is targeting a fresh scoring streak for Scotland after going 13 games without netting. The Aussie-born ace hit goals in four consecutive games in 2022 World Cup qualifying. He scored as Scotland edged 1-0 wins over Moldova, Austria and the Faroe Islands as well as in the 3-2 thriller against Israel at Hampden. ‌ Scotland were beaten by Ukraine at the semi-final play-off stage to miss out on the Qatar finals. The 2026 renewal, hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico, is now firmly in the 29-year-old's sights. Dykes said: 'The best feeling in the world is scoring goals. I went on a great run last World Cup qualifying, scoring big goals when we needed it. 'That's what I aim to do again but it's not always about scoring goals. I just want to play my part for the team. As long as we're winning and performing, that's the main thing. I've been stuck on nine goals for a little bit now so I'm desperate to hit double figures. ‌ 'I told John McGinn a while ago that I was catching him but he's starting to slip away, so I need to pull my finger out and make sure I score a few more. 'The World Cup is the aim. I was lucky enough to play in the first Euros we qualified for. When I joined up with Scotland at first, that was one of my major goals and the World Cup was another. 'We've got the opportunity to do that now. I've got full belief in my team-mates, myself and the whole of this nation that we can qualify for the World Cup. I'm sure if we did, it would be amazing for the whole country.' ‌ Dykes has suffered much worse than an injury ruling him out of action for four months. A bout of pneumonia landed him on a drip in hospital in a terrifying health scare for the big striker and his family in January 2023. That frightening episode gives him valuable perspective when dealing with fitness issues in his career. 'It builds your character and makes you stronger in the long run,' added the ex-Livingston and QPR hitman. ‌ 'That's why I've switched my brain to think positives out of some things, such as going out to the Euros last summer and just being around the boys and doing a bit of TV work. 'Even though I was devastated not playing, this is football. It's been my most difficult season with injuries so far in my career. 'Obviously getting injured before the Euros was very disappointing. And the back end of this season, being injured for a while has obviously has been tough. I'm feeling good now.' ‌ Dykes scored five goals for Birmingham as they romped to the League One title and reached the EFL Trophy Final. A stunning late Dykes header against Bradford secured a Wembley place for ex-Celtic coach Chris Davies and his team. They lost to Peterborough in the showpiece but, over the long term, the Blues were miles clear of the rest. Dykes said: 'Obviously I didn't want to go down to League One but the way the club are building and what they're trying to do for the future is something that appealed to me. This season was a step backwards but it was two steps forward as well.'

Revealed: How troubled NFL star Tyreek Hill is tackling off-field woes amid explosive divorce dispute with influencer wife

NFL phenom Tyreek Hill is attempting to move forward from a troubling offseason that includes an explosive divorce dispute by going to therapy and church more often. Hill spoke publicly for the first time since the end of the Dolphins' season in January, where he took himself off the field against the New York Jets before the end of the game and then appeared to request a trade after the game. Hill has walked back that desire, with head coach Mike McDaniel showing public displeasure for the way the speedy wide receiver handled his business. The 31-year-old's offseason hit a climax last month when police were called to his home during a domestic dispute with his then-wife, influencer Keeta Vaccaro. She has since filed for divorce from Hill. 'It's tough. Only thing I'm going to say is, man, money is a crazy thing for a lot of people,' Hill said. 'But I mean for me, we just going to let the details just handle itself, you know what I'm saying? Because at the end of the day, the truth always comes out, right?' 'My job is just to be a great father to all of my kids and be the best player I can be and be the best leader I can be for these guys in this locker room, man. So, I'm going to stand strong on that and I'm going to stand firm on that.' Hill also spoke on him wanting to be traded and where his current status with the Dolphins resides. 'It was tough, man,' Hill added. 'Obviously emotions were high then, but at the end of the day, I'm just looking to move forward from that, hoping that I can prove myself and prove to my teammates that I'm still one of them ones, man, who's chasing 2K [receiving yards], still one of those ones chasing playoff dreams and all of that great stuff.' After missing the postseason, it is clear Hill has changed things only as the AFC gets more stacked around Miami. 'I'm doing more,' Hill said. 'So just being more involved in that and then just understanding what coach is trying to do. I feel like when I first got here, I wouldn't say that I wasn't all the way bought in, but me having, me having a better understanding of what [McDaniel is] trying to push throughout the locker room, I feel like now I understand him better.' 'I understand Tua [Tagovailoa] better. I understand Bev [quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell]; our new receiver coach - me and him clicked immediately when he got here. Everybody's on the same page, man.' Robert Prince, the new wide receiver's coach in Miami, has praised Hill for how he has led the room since his arrival, including taking out the position group at the start of the Dolphins' offseason program. Whether therapy and his faith will help Hill become the near-MVP winner he was in 2023 is unclear. However, he seems focused on regaining that form.
