Canada's Abigail Strate wins ski jump bronze medal at World Cup in Austria

Yahoo24-02-2025
HINZENBACH — Canada's Abigail Strate won bronze on Sunday for her first World Cup ski jumping medal of the season.
Strate, from Calgary, scored 226.6 points over two jumps on the normal-size hill. She covered a distance of 86.5 metres on her first jump and 87.5 metres on her second.
"I decided I was going to go for it," she said. "It either works or it doesn't. In a top sport like this the margin is so small, you can't be half in."
Slovenia's Nika Prevc won gold with 244.0 points and Germany's Selina Freitag took silver (241.5).
It was Strate's sixth career World Cup medal.
Calgary's Nicole Maurer was 16th.

Ireland squad named for Women's T20 Euro qualifier

Ireland have named their 14-strong squad for the Women's T20 World Cup European Qualifier in Rotterdam, which runs from 20-27 August. Hosts Netherlands, Italy, and Germany will provide the opposition with Ireland playing each nation twice in a round robin format. The top two will progress to the Global Qualifier in Nepal which will contain 10 teams. Gaby Lewis, who was nominated for the ICC Women's player of the Month for July, will captain the side with Orla Prendergast named vice captain, having recently risen to sixth position in the T20 all-rounders list. Ireland swept a three-game series against Zimbabwe in July before a 2-1 series win against Pakistan with the only change from the latter squad seeing Alana Dalzell replacing Louise Little. The squad contains plenty of experience as Lewis and Laura Delany have already reached the 100 cap mark, while Prendergast, Rebecca Stockell, Leah Paul, Cara Murray and Arlene Kelly have surpassed 50. Amy Hunter will join this club should she start the opening game against Germany on 20 August. Two members of the squad have the chance to become the first Irish woman to achieve the double of 1500 runs and 50 wickets in the T20 format with Delany 21 runs away and Predergast 54 short. "Qualifier campaigns are notoriously tough, with fixtures coming thick and fast," said Ireland selector, Ciara O'Brien. "The squad we have chosen, while relatively young in age, have almost 650 caps collectively in the T20I format, so have plenty of experience to draw upon. This experience, as well as a recent hard-fought series win over Pakistan, have the players in a good place and eager to take the first steps towards World Cup qualification." T20 World Cup European Qualifier squad Gaby Lewis (captain), Ava Canning, Christina Coulter Reilly, Alana Dalzell, Laura Delany, Amy Hunter, Arlene Kelly, Jane Maguire, Lara McBride, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Freya Sargent, Rebecca Stokell Ireland's fixtures 20 August: Ireland v Germany (14.45 BST) 21 August: Ireland v Netherlands (10:00 BST) 23 August: Ireland v Italy (10:00 BST) 24 August: Ireland v Germany (10:00 BST) 26 August: Ireland v Netherlands (14.45 BST) 27 August: Ireland v Italy (14.45 BST) Get cricket news sent straight to your phone

'It's clearly a huge loss'

The sale of Torbjorn Heggem is clearly a huge loss to the heart of West Bromwich Albion's defence, however, it is the best example yet of the recruitment model that has been implemented under the club's owners, Bilkul, and led by their sporting director Andrew Nestor. Outside of the club, practically nothing was known about the Norwegian defender when he arrived from Swedish top-flight side IF Brommapojkarna in July 2024. Heggem cost under £600k and, fast forward 13 months, he is a Norway international and is going to be playing in Serie A after sealing a move which is worth in the region of £10m. He was deservedly crowned the Baggies' player of the season after featuring in all but one of their Championship games in the 2024-25 campaign, and provided further proof of his credentials with a solid performance for his national team in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory against Italy during the summer - which may have alerted Bologna to his talents, although it is likely he was on their radar already. Read more of Steve Hermon's analysis on Heggem's departure here.

Rumors fly surrounding Oklahoma QB John Mateer and 2022 UCLA-USC football game

There's a new, strange sports betting rumor swirling around the internet, with Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer being placed under review for any gambling activity. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Oklahoma is aware of the situation and is reviewing Mateer for any possible gambling activity. Mateer is entering his first season with the Sooners after playing with the Washington State Cougars the past three years. College Sports Wire writer Riley Donald explained on Tuesday why Mateer is unlikely to be the last player caught in this sort of entanglement. 'While college sports feature ads for different gambling sites every other commercial, the act of collegiate athletes gambling is still strictly prohibited and often a fast-track ticket to suspensions or worse. The latest saga around gambling activity in the college football world has the spotlight shining squarely on the Oklahoma Sooners and their new transfer quarterback John Mateer, just before the 2025 season is set to begin.' Donald wrote. The rumors began after Mateer's Venmo transaction history was posted online, with Mateer having some suspicious payments that allude to sports betting. Perhaps allude isn't a strong enough word, as Mateer had one payment titled simply 'Sports gambling (UCLA vs USC).' Mateer claimed that his transactions were an "inside joke" and that no illegal activity had occured. Mateer shouldn't be viewed as guilty simply off his Venmo transaction history, but the date of Mateer's transaction referring to USC and UCLA came just one day after the Bruins lost to the Trojans 48-45 back in 2022, which only makes it more likely that he had a wager on the game. Three days later, Mateer had another Venmo payment, receiving a payment titled 'Ultra sports gambling fifa World Cup' that was completed three days after the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. These sorts of scandals, it will be argued by some, will continue with the continued acceptance of sports betting in American society, with professional and collegiate programs signing deals with sports betting companies while holding the expectation for players, both pro and collegiate, to not participate.
