Ireland squad named for Women's T20 Euro qualifier
Hosts Netherlands, Italy, and Germany will provide the opposition with Ireland playing each nation twice in a round robin format. The top two will progress to the Global Qualifier in Nepal which will contain 10 teams.
Gaby Lewis, who was nominated for the ICC Women's player of the Month for July, will captain the side with Orla Prendergast named vice captain, having recently risen to sixth position in the T20 all-rounders list.
Ireland swept a three-game series against Zimbabwe in July before a 2-1 series win against Pakistan with the only change from the latter squad seeing Alana Dalzell replacing Louise Little.
The squad contains plenty of experience as Lewis and Laura Delany have already reached the 100 cap mark, while Prendergast, Rebecca Stockell, Leah Paul, Cara Murray and Arlene Kelly have surpassed 50. Amy Hunter will join this club should she start the opening game against Germany on 20 August.
Two members of the squad have the chance to become the first Irish woman to achieve the double of 1500 runs and 50 wickets in the T20 format with Delany 21 runs away and Predergast 54 short.
"Qualifier campaigns are notoriously tough, with fixtures coming thick and fast," said Ireland selector, Ciara O'Brien.
"The squad we have chosen, while relatively young in age, have almost 650 caps collectively in the T20I format, so have plenty of experience to draw upon. This experience, as well as a recent hard-fought series win over Pakistan, have the players in a good place and eager to take the first steps towards World Cup qualification."

Weah went as far as to call the players "evil" for their remarks. Pulisic said: 'I'd say the most annoying thing, and for me, the biggest cop out of all-time is when all pundits want to say, 'They didn't want it. They didn't have the heart. Back in our day, we would fight and we would die on that field.'' Mark believed that those players were chasing "clicks" and podcast views. Drama is more compelling, and it suits those players to knock the USMNT in their post-playing careers. At the very least, it doesn't seem like the infighting between the current team and old guard will stop in the near future. If anything, this episode could be another escalation.

'It's clearly a huge loss'
The sale of Torbjorn Heggem is clearly a huge loss to the heart of West Bromwich Albion's defence, however, it is the best example yet of the recruitment model that has been implemented under the club's owners, Bilkul, and led by their sporting director Andrew Nestor. Outside of the club, practically nothing was known about the Norwegian defender when he arrived from Swedish top-flight side IF Brommapojkarna in July 2024. Heggem cost under £600k and, fast forward 13 months, he is a Norway international and is going to be playing in Serie A after sealing a move which is worth in the region of £10m. He was deservedly crowned the Baggies' player of the season after featuring in all but one of their Championship games in the 2024-25 campaign, and provided further proof of his credentials with a solid performance for his national team in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory against Italy during the summer - which may have alerted Bologna to his talents, although it is likely he was on their radar already.
