Many Pilgrims Opt To Decline Haj Subsidy – Mohd Na'im
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the rejection stemmed from the growing awareness among Muslims that performing the fifth Pillar of Islam must be based on financial ability.
'Tabung Haji (TH) is making efforts to explain to Muslims the link between Haj and the condition of affordability. Beginning in 2022, the subsidies provided by TH to B40 and M40 pilgrims have been decreasing... this is an effort to educate Muslims on the obligation of Haj.
'... a total of 396 (in 2023) and 263 (in 2024) voluntarily rejected the assistance... they did not wish to accept any form of subsidy or Haj aid provided,' he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) on the suggestion of channelling TH's profit returns as subsidised assistance to pilgrims in need.
Mohd Na'im said the rejection of subsidies also had a positive impact on TH's financial performance, with its dividend distribution rising to 3.25 per cent last year.
Answering Ahmad Marzuk's original question regarding the increase in costs and the Haj quota, he said there has been no rise in Haj cost for Muassasah pilgrims this year, with the amount remaining the same as last year at RM33,300 per pilgrim.
As for the Haj quota, he said there were no unused official Haj quotas for the period from 2020 to 2025.
'The official annual Haj quota allocated by the Saudi Arabian government is 31,600, based on a resolution by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which stipulates one per cent of a country's Muslim population.

The statement came ahead of a planned peace talks between Cambodia and Thailand scheduled for 3 pm Monday in Putrajaya. Cambodian Premier Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai separately confirmed yesterday that they would attend the highly anticipated meeting initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as current Asean Chair. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. [UPDATED] Nga clarifies 20-tonne rubbish figure from rally
KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of 20 tonnes of rubbish left behind by participants of the opposition rally in the capital last Saturday sparked an uproar in the Dewan Rakyat when Pendang MP Datuk Awang Hashim questioned the figure reported by the Housing and Local Government Ministry. Awang accused Minister Nga Kor Ming of lying and cast doubt on the reported 20 tonnes of waste allegedly collected by SWCorp after the rally, arguing that the figure did not match the estimated 18,000 participants, as confirmed by the police. Responding to Awang's question, Nga clarified that the figure did not originate from him personally but was based on a report from SWCorp. "As a government that respects the constitution and upholds democratic principles, we welcome peaceful assemblies but they must be carried out in a peaceful and orderly manner, including maintaining cleanliness," he said during the Minister's Question Time today. "What I criticised was the unhygienic behaviour. As the saying goes, 'if you eat chillies, you'll feel the heat.' I never accused the opposition members of parliament themselves of littering. "The claim that 20 tonnes of rubbish were left behind was based on a report I received from SWCorp on the ground. Hundreds of workers were mobilised to clean up after the Black Shirt rally. I do not deny that a group from Unit Amal helped with the clean-up, and I thank them for that. But it also cannot be denied that 20 tonnes of rubbish were scattered across Sogo, Dataran Merdeka, and Jalan Petaling," he added. Tensions rose in the House as shouting erupted, prompting Deputy Speaker Alice Lau to mute the microphones and instruct Awang to take his seat. "You're lying. A minister can't lie," Awang was heard saying. Lau moved to conclude the session, but Nga and Awang continued exchanging remarks. Awang then stood up again and shouted, "The minister lied about the 20 tonnes. DAP!" Nga responded by demanding that Awang retract his statement. Lau warned, "If Pendang stands up one more time, please leave the hall."

Don't let foreigners misuse business licences, warns Nga
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not allow their citizenship to be misused by foreigners to obtain business licences, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said from January 2023 to July this year, 3,703 enforcement operations were carried out against business premises involving foreign workers. "Malaysian citizens must uphold the Rukun Negara and safeguard the nation's identity from being exploited," he said in reply to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences terminated, and 2,880 premises seized due to licence violations. He explained that government policies were for the benefit of Malaysians and not foreigners, while clarifying that the ministry had never issued such licences to foreigners. "The local authorities and the government have never allowed foreigners to apply and obtain licences for hawker stalls, small businesses, business premises, retail shops, restaurants, car workshops and markets," he said. He added that foreigners were also not allowed to work at premises owned by the local authorities, as citizens were meant to earn an income through the local authorities' premises. "The local authorities will not compromise with any violation of the terms of the licence issued. Strict action such as seizures, compounds, shutting down of premises and termination of licences will be taken," he said.
