Malda: With fear writ large on their faces, detainees from Gurgaon who began returning to their homes on Sunday recounted their ordeal in police custody, having been suspected of being Bangladeshis.
They also expressed anxiety over whether they would ever be able to return to Gurgaon and pick up the pieces of the lives they were forced to abruptly abandon.
Nurul Hasan of Dangi Kumedpur, under Itahar police station in North Dinajpur, returned home five days ago, and is still disturbed by the threats he allegedly got from Haryana police. "I have been working in Gurgaon for the last four years. Never did we face such threats there," Hasan said.
Working as a courier for an e-commerce company, Hasan owned a motorcycle. "We were staying in a rented room at Sector 77. Last week, police suddenly came and took seven of us away. They did not take us to the local police station at Khirkitola but to another one. There, we were accused of being Bangladeshi. I had my Aadhaar, PAN, EPIC, apart from the identity card of my company with me. But nothing could satisfy them," he said.

"Our house owner was summoned, who also assured them we were from Bengal. Still, police were not convinced. That night, we returned home late, but the landlord did not want us staying there any more. The very next day, I caught a train home. Many of us are still in Gurgaon. I have asked them to return however they can. Let the situation improve."
Mosaraf Hosen of Aldhanda village in Itahar has been travelling to Gurgaon since 2008 to work as a construction labourer.
A year ago, he took his wife Hasema with him. Hasema was working as a domestic help. In April, Mosaraf returned home for house repairs. "My two children live here with my parents. The recent development scared me as well as my wife. I couldn't take the risk of having her be there alone. She returned home two days ago," he said.
However, both Hasan and Mosaraf are aware that returning to Haryana is inevitable. "We have to get back to work.
Else, how will we feed our families? Many of us are paying EMI on our bikes. Without work, how will we be able to pay?" said Hasan.
Itahar MLA Mosharaf Hossain, who has opened several support camps for migrant workers, said, "About 700 workers have returned from Haryana so far. There are more than 8,000 workers across construction, gardening, delivery and domestic help. They have no connection with Bangladesh and have Aadhaar, PAN or EPIC. But police are not willing to accept these. We are now collecting police clearance certificates."

Maharashtra Government To Cancel Fake Birth Certificates Of Bangladeshi Migrants
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will cancel the fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state by August 15, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Wednesday. As many as 42,000 such cases have been found but the actual number is greater, and it will be ascertained by the officials, he told reporters here. "By August 15, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis will be cancelled," the BJP leader said, adding that the copies of such certificates will have to be sent to the Department of Revenue and the Department of Health. Earlier, BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya had alleged that 3,997 birth certificates had been issued to Bangladeshis on the basis of forged documents, leading to the state government suspending two officials previously posted in Malegaon in Nashik district. On Tuesday, Bawankule held a meeting with the state chief secretary, which was attended by district collectors via video conference. Somaiya too attended the meeting, sources said. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam had stated in March that in the last four years, the government has been cracking down on illegal Bangladeshi residents as never before. In 2021, 109 Bangladeshis residing illegally in the state were deported, followed by 77 in 2022 and 127 in 2023. In 2024, as many as 716 illegal Bangladeshi residents were arrested and 202 deported, he stated.

After HC directives, govt restrains cops from contacting parties, lawyers of pending cases directly
Prayagraj: After the directives and concerns issued by the Allahabad High Court, the Uttar Pradesh govt has issued circular restraining police personnel from directly contacting parties and lawyers in pending matters. The development came when 90-year-old petitioner – Gauri Shankar Saroj of Jaunpur-- alleged that local police personnel had threatened him to withdraw his petition against alleged encroachment of Gram Sabha land. It was further alleged that the police had also raided his house in retaliation. In the circular dated July 25, the state govt issued a comprehensive statewide guideline to prevent police interference in sub-judice (pending) matters. These guidelines strictly prohibit police personnel from contacting petitioners, or their advocates concerned with pending matters without lawful authority and prior sanction from a competent officer or court. Earlier, the high court had taken a serious note of the allegations made by the petitioner. Subsequently, on July 15, the state had sought 10-day time to formulate statewide directions on the issue. However, the court also voiced concerns about their implementation. "This court, not without reason, has apprehensions that the guidelines, like many others, would be forgotten in course of time. They would gather dust with the bureaus of district officials, where they are meant to be implemented," the court observed. In this backdrop, the court also directed the additional chief standing counsel to consult state officials and then make suggestions about how to implement these guidelines. The court in its order dated July 28 also took on record an affidavit by the superintendent of police, Jaunpur regarding disciplinary action against the officers allegedly involved in the intimidation of the petitioner and his lawyer. The court has directed to hear this matter on July 31.

Retd Col robbed at gunpoint while walking dog in Mohali
1 2 Mohali: A retired Army officer was robbed at gunpoint while walking his dog near his residence in Aerocity Block-C, Mohali. The incident occurred around 6.30 pm on July 20, when four armed men in a black Honda City intercepted him under the pretext of asking for directions. The victim, Col Gurjeet Singh (retd), a resident of Sector 82 and currently posted as in-charge at the ECHS centre in Fatehgarh Sahib, claimed that the suspects used a car with mud-smeared registration number plates, partially obscuring the registration number. Only "MH" was visible, indicating a Maharashtra registration. The car also had miniature Union Jack flags on its dashboard. Singh was walking near the VY Infra property dealer's office when the car passed him, only to return moments later. A youth stepped out from the driver's side and asked for directions to an immigration agent's house. During the brief exchange, the man brandished a pistol and demanded Singh's gold bracelet (approx. 1.5 tolas) and iPhone. Two other suspects, both Sikh men in their mid-20s, remained inside the vehicle. Fearing for his safety, Singh complied, and the car sped off.
