Uttarakhand: 34 fake babas arrested in Dehradun under Operation Kalanemi
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said that all those arrested were masquerading as spiritual figures but were found to be engaging in deceptive practices.
He said, 'Under Operation Kalanemi, today, while taking action in various police station areas, police have arrested 34 fake babas roaming around in the guise of saints and sages, against whom legal action is being taken. Among the arrested fake babas, 23 are residents of other states.'
Meanwhile, Swami Yatindranand Giri, a prominent spiritual leader from the Juna Akhara, has strongly endorsed Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's recently launched Operation Kalanemi, calling it a courageous move aimed at protecting Sanatan Dharma from impostors and criminal elements misusing religious garb.
Speaking to ANI, he called it a 'courageous' step and suggested that it should be implemented nationwide, aimed at distinguishing genuine Sanatan Dharma practitioners from those misusing it to defame the tradition.
Swami Giri said, 'Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has taken a very courageous decision, and I would say that such a step should be implemented across the entire country. Sanatan Dharma is a highly respected tradition, and there are many people who, under the guise of saffron robes, are actually criminal and jihadi elements trying to defame Sanatan Dharma.'
He alleged that the certain criminal individuals are promoting 'immoral behaviour' in the guise of Sanatan Dharma.
'They roam around dressed as saints, some consuming meat and alcohol, and are engaged in various kinds of fraud. These people, using saffron as a cover, are promoting immoral behavior and trying to tarnish Hindutva and Sanatan Dharma,' he said.
He further added, 'Our Chief Minister of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, consistently makes such bold decisions. Earlier, he brought in the Uniform Civil Code and openly took a stand against land jihad.'
Swami Giri said that CM Pushkar Singh Dhami's decision targets those who are 'like a cancer in society'.
He said, 'Now, through Operation Kalanemi, he is targeting those elements who are like a cancer in society, who harm and defame religion. The decision to take the strictest action against such individuals roaming around disguised as saints is truly commendable. Operation Kalanemi is undoubtedly a very bold move, and for this, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.'
Swami Giri expressed that saints and sages nationwide welcome CM Dhami's decision, 'All the saints and sages across India are very pleased with this decision, as it aims to root out the distortions infiltrating Sanatan Dharma. Operation Kalanemi will help in restoring the purity, sanctity, and uniqueness of Sanatan Dharma. We offer our blessings to him for taking this step.'
Operation Kalanemi was launched on July 10 as Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami gave strict instructions to officials to crack down on impersonators who cheat people and exploit their sentiments in the name of Sanatan Dharma in Uttarakhand. (ANI)

SC Summons Samay Raina, Other Comedians Over Alleged Remarks On Disabilities
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed stand-up comedians Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, and Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar to appear personally before the court on the next date of hearing over their alleged insensitive remarks against persons with disabilities. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi allowed comedian Sonali Thakkar, also known as Sonali Aditya Desai, to appear virtually during the next hearing. The apex court recorded the presence of Raina, Goyal, Tanwar, Ghai, and Thakkar and directed them to file their replies to the petition within two weeks. They all appeared before the apex court today in pursuant to court's earlier order. The bench made it clear that no extension will be granted beyond this period and warned that any absence on the next date of hearing will be viewed seriously. The apex court asked Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, to prepare social media guidelines while balancing the freedom of speech and expression and the rights and duties of others. Venkataramani sought time to assist the court on the issue and said the enforceability of guidelines would require detailed consideration. "What we are doing is for posterity. You have to ensure that not a single word is misused by anyone. You have to ensure balance. We have to protect citizens' rights. It also sought the formulation of guidelines to safeguard the rights and dignity of persons with disability in the context of the broadcasting of online content. On May 5, the bench had summoned the comedians to appear before it or face coercive action after the plea alleged that they ridiculed persons suffering from SMA, a rare disorder, and also those suffering from other disabilities on their show. The top court had also issued notice to the Union of India through the Ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology, Social Justice and Empowerment, and News Broadcasters and Digital Association, and Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation. The NGO brought to the notice of the court the broadcast of certain online content, media and programmes that are derogatory, offensive, denigrating, ableist or belittling to persons with disability, or their diseases, or their treatment options. The petitioner was also aggrieved by the lack of any explicit statutory guidelines to sufficiently regulate the broadcast of such online content, which violates the right to life and dignity of persons with disabilities, while transgressing the qualified right of free speech and expression. It asked the court to put a positive obligation on both the government and private actors to adopt a unique standard of representation of persons with disability in the online domain. The NGO accused Raina of insensitive remarks on persons with such conditions, high-costing drugs and treatment options for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and also alleged to have ridiculed a person with disability. It flagged videos where he made comments on persons with disabilities. The petition said these comedians are public figures and enjoy a following of millions of viewers/users on various social media intermediaries. "The petitioner is concerned by certain live and pre-recorded event videos of these individuals, due to their offensive, denigrating and dehumanising representation of persons with disabilities," the petition said. "These videos shed light on the widespread irresponsible, insensitive and violate dissemination of such online content that contravenes the rightsof the persons with disability under Article 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India, propels offensive stereotypes and misguided portrayals against them, and detrimentally impacts their societal participation, and fosters insensitivity and inhumanity against them, and as such falls within the reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2)," said the petition.

Suspend Cop Who Did Not Act In SC/ST Act Case: Madras High Court
Chennai: The Madras High Court has ordered the Director General of Police to suspend the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kottakuppam range for failing to take appropriate action in a case filed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The case pertains to a land dispute in Vanur, Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, between Senthamarai, from the Scheduled Caste community, and Veerasami from another community. The district court had ruled in favour of Senthamarai, and the High Court upheld the ruling. However, Kesavan, from a different community, later claimed ownership of the land and allegedly threatened Senthamarai and his family. Despite a complaint filed in 2023 at the Vanur police station, no action was taken. In 2024, when a relative of Senthamarai went to inspect the land, he was abused with casteist slurs, physically assaulted, and his phone was snatched by Kesavan. Though a case was registered under the SC/ST Act, police allegedly failed to act, while a counter-complaint from Kesavan led to a case being filed against seven members of Senthamarai's side. Senthamarai submitted a plea demanding action against the police officer for bias and inaction. After hearing arguments, Justice P. Velmurugan observed that the DSP had acted in a one-sided manner and did not conduct a proper investigation. The court today directed the DGP to suspend the officer and submit a report to the court. The case has been adjourned for further hearing.

Andhra Pradesh govt. drops all proceedings against retired IPS officer Venkateswara Rao
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has officially dropped all further proceedings against retired IPS officer A.B. Venkateswara Rao, former Additional Director-General of Police (Intelligence), following the quashing of an FIR and chargesheet by the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. In G.O. RT No.1334 issued on Tuesday, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand said the case registered against Mr. Venkateswara Rao by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) under multiple IPC Sections, including 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), and 409 (criminal breach of trust), and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act was no longer valid in the light of the High Court's ruling. The FIR and subsequent chargesheet filed before the Special Judge for SPE & ACB Cases in Vijayawada were quashed by the High Court, in response to a criminal petition filed by Mr. Venkateswara Rao. After examining the case, the State government decided not to pursue the Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court, and formally issued orders to cease all further legal and departmental action. The Director-General of Police was directed to implement the decision accordingly.
