DAP Sarawak backs development, questions practicality of KIA relocation
KUCHING (May 29): The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak is not against any development for the prosperity of Sarawak, said Michael Kong.
The special assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, said this in response to recent remarks from Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, urging him to engage with the legitimate questions raised by Chong regarding the cost and practicality of relocating the proposed multi-billion-ringgit Kuching International Airport (KIA) to Tanjung Embang.
'Yap's dismissive remarks once again show SUPP (Sarawak United People's Party)'s true colours – more interested in cheerleading for GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) than genuinely scrutinising public expenditure or looking after the people's interest.
'This is classic SUPP behaviour. When it comes from GPS, they clap; when it is from DAP Sarawak, they shoot it down,' he said in a statement.
Kong clarified that Chong was questioning the cost, location, and long-term impact of relocating the KIA to Tanjung Embang – a site that would require travellers to endure up to two hours of travel (considering traffic and distance) just to catch a flight.
He added that this would force travellers to leave their homes at least three hours before flight time.
'We must learn from examples like Kuala Lumpur, where in 2020 alone, traffic congestion was estimated to cost the nation RM20 billion annually, including losses in productivity, fuel and health-related costs due to pollution.
'Are we heading down the same road?'
Stressing that DAP was not opposing merely for the sake of it, Kong said the party was proposing realistic, people-friendly alternatives.
One of such proposals, he pointed out, would be relocating the Air Force base currently adjacent to KIA, which could free up valuable land for terminal expansion and facility upgrades at the existing location.
'This is not a radical idea, as similar moves have been done before.
'The Air Force base at Sungai Besi was successfully relocated to pave the way for Bandar Malaysia, proving that such strategic decisions can yield high-value outcomes.
'Expanding KIA in its current location would be far more cost-effective than building a new airport from scratch.
'On top of that, it will allow surrounding areas like Mile 7, Jalan Sungai Tapang, and Stampin Resettlement Scheme to benefit from the economic spillover.'
He added that efforts could be made to develop Tanjung Embang into a vibrant ecotourism destination, complementing Muara Tebas and Asajaya.

Razman hopes Perak exco man not given ‘immunity' in caricature probe
Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Perak opposition leader Razman Zakaria (left) has demanded that DAP's Woo Kah Leong apologise over a caricature post deemed offensive. PETALING JAYA: Perak opposition leader Razman Zakaria has urged authorities not to grant any 'immunity' to state executive councillor Woo Kah Leong, who is under police investigation over a social media post featuring an allegedly offensive caricature of him. The Gunong Semanggol assemblyman said he had demanded an apology from Woo, but that none was forthcoming. Instead, he said DAP continued to defend its youth chief's actions. He warned that any failure to act could erode public support for the state government led by Umno and Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'To the Umno-led state government leaders in Perak, like it or not, this is the quality of an exco member from DAP,' he said in a statement. 'If you have any honour, just resign from the exco post because the people are always watching and will judge what happens as a result of such irresponsible behaviour. 'It's not impossible that the people will reject you over this issue.' Police recorded Woo's statement yesterday in connection with the investigation into the allegedly provocative social media post. Woo had posted the caricature on Facebook alongside a statement in April. It depicted Razman as a clown riding a unicycle on a tightrope, labelling the Perak PAS chief as 'raja fitnah' ('the king of slander'). This was believed to be in reference to the various instances in which Razman had apologised to PH leaders over various accusations he had made against them. The PAS man has demanded that Woo apologise openly for the 'provocative' posting. However, Woo has stood by his Facebook post, saying it was not a personal attack but satire. He also said the police report stifled freedom of speech. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? More tamu desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the MADANI Government, through KUSKOP, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the MADANI Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement today. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. The tamu desa initiative was also part of the government's commitment to pay special attention to the needs of rural Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the nation's inclusive development agenda, he added.
