Silambam not raised in Parliament doesn't mean we're not working: Rayer

A DAP MP has stressed that the government takes action on community concerns even if they are not raised in Parliament, citing Selangor's recent decision to propose retaining the Indian martial art silambam for the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma).
RSN Rayer lamented that after news of the sport's exclusion from the upcoming Sukma initially made the rounds on social media last week, certain quarters were quick to 'attack and criticise' the federal and state governments for allegedly sidelining the Indian community.

Calls grow for DAP to cut ties with Akmal over flag issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Negeri Sembilan DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) has urged its party leadership to sever ties with Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the flag issue. The group said Akmal's actions regarding the upside-down Jalur Gemilang incident had crossed the line and were "tantamount to bullying." This follows a similar call made by Penang Dapsy yesterday, which Akmal has challenged the party to act on. On Thursday, Akmal led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Bersatu, and Pas in a 1.4km march to protest a hardware store that had displayed the national flag incorrectly. The store owner, Pang Chin Tian, 59, had apologised for the incident last Saturday, stating it was unintentional. In its statement, Negeri Sembilan Dapsy said that when Umno Youth made a similar mistake, Akmal did not demand charges be filed. "Politicians who are divisive and incite hate should be rejected by all Pakatan Harapan supporters," it said. The group said it supports Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call for action against those who bully and intimidate others. "We urge the DAP and national Dapsy leadership to take a stand and cut ties with irresponsible politicians like Akmal to ensure we are consistent in rejecting divisive politics," it said. Yesterday, Akmal said on Facebook that any decision to cut ties with him would mean DAP was severing ties with Umno Youth and the party as a whole.

MIC demonstrates political agility

LETTER | A growing sense of neglect among Malaysian Indians is leading them to slowly throw their support behind the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). Piecemeal solutions are not what the Indian community needs; instead, they require concerted efforts to improve their quality of life in every sector. MIC has a rich historical legacy and was instrumental in the formation of Malaysia as a sovereign nation. Currently, the MIC faces a pivotal moment ahead of the 16th general election. While it was once the leading voice for the Indian community under BN, the party is now demonstrating the political agility necessary to regain support and survive in today's dynamic political climate. Citing a lack of representation for the party and the Indian community within the Madani government, MIC members have expressed discontent, feeling they are being treated as an 'unwanted guest'. In response, MIC deputy president M Saravanan said in July 2025 that the party's future direction would be determined at its annual general meeting in October this year. Experience and dedication MIC is a versatile political platform. 79 years of experience have prepared it to wade through any obstacles or difficult paths. MIC's dedication to serving the community remains constant, regardless of cabinet positions. MIC has consistently provided scholarships and education loans and supported the underprivileged without ever backing down. The community is still looking for MIC party leaders to get assistance and support, although they did give their vote to them in the previous general election. Taking a leading role in a crucial time, MIC has placed itself at the forefront of discussions on key issues for Indian Malaysians, including education, employment, minority rights, and legal equality. Indian concerns Today, Indians are unfortunately underrepresented in both civil service and private sector employment. Though their population is relatively declining, they remain a significant community, holding the third-largest demographic position in Peninsular Malaysia after the Malays and Chinese. The community's key concerns include access to quality education, fair economic opportunities, equitable and inclusive development, and a proper settlement of their citizenship issues. It is undeniable that Malaysian Indians have been instrumental in the country's development. Nevertheless, as Malaysian politics continues to evolve, the fate of the MIC will hinge on its capacity to adapt and rebuild its connection with supporters and voters. N Sembilan DAP Youth joins call to end ties with Akmal over 'hate politics'

A third DAP state youth wing has urged the party's leadership to cut political ties with Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, accusing him of perpetuating 'hate politics' through his handling of the Jalur Gemilang issue. In a statement, the Negeri Sembilan DAP Youth wing said Akmal's actions in politicising the matter were excessive and deliberately framed to portray non-Malays as unpatriotic.
