Uttar Pradesh launches 'Sugamya Worksheets' for nearly 3 lakh children with special needs
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh is reaching out to nearly 2.96 lakh children with special needs through 'Sugamya Worksheets,' developed in collaboration with UNICEF.
Designed to enhance foundational learning while building confidence and self-esteem, this initiative aims to integrate Divyang (differently-abled) children into the mainstream with the proper support and resources, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
These worksheets cover Hindi and Mathematics for students from classes 1 to 8, with 1,300 worksheets developed for classes 1 to 5 and 600 for classes 6 to 8 - totalling 1,900 worksheets.
Created for all categories of children with disabilities except those with complete visual impairment, the worksheets use simple language, vibrant visuals and engaging formats to make learning accessible and enjoyable.
The printing of the worksheets has been completed, and their distribution to all districts has been ensured.
At the block and school levels, worksheets are now being delivered.
The worksheets will be distributed in a phased manner, one set at a time. Only after students complete and teachers assess one set will the next set be provided, the statement said.
Teachers have been instructed to engage students in completing the worksheets through individual, pair, and group activities. And, before each set, it is mandatory to hold a brief discussion or activity with students to introduce the context.

After evaluation, students will be allowed to take the worksheets home for further practice, it added.
Special educators will visit schools to ensure worksheet availability and help resolve difficulties faced by students. Their monthly reports will be reviewed by district coordinators, who will also provide feedback and guidance based on these reviews, it said.
UP Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said that this initiative is not just an innovation in education but a strong step toward building an inclusive and empathetic society.

NEW DELH: A delayed take-off may have prevented a far greater tragedy on Thursday when an Air India Dreamliner crashed into the residential quarters and mess hall of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, killing at least four people on the ground — including three resident doctors and the pregnant wife of another. Flight AI171 to London Gatwick, carrying 241 people onboard, took off 29 minutes behind schedule. Minutes earlier, a large group of doctors had finished lunch at the mess hall, which was later struck by the aircraft's tail section. The Boeing 787, which lost control shortly after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, disintegrated in mid-air and fell in three parts: the nose hit the Atulyam-11 residential quarters for undergraduate and postgraduate doctors, the midsection tore through a garden and road and the tail slammed into the mess building. India -Rescue workers searched for missing people and aircraft parts on Friday after an Air India plane crashed onto a medical college hostel in the city of Ahmedabad, killing more than 260 people in the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 people on board, headed for Gatwick Airport south of London, had only one survivor after it crashed onto the hostel during lunch hour. Local newspaper Hindustan Times reported that one of two black boxes from the plane had been found. Reuters could not verify the report and the paper did not say whether the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder had been recovered. Live Events Residents living in the vicinity said that construction of the hostel for resident doctors was completed only a year ago and the buildings were not fully occupied. Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer, said on Thursday the death toll was more than 240, revising down a previous toll of 294 as it included body parts that had been double counted. The dead included Vijay Rupani, the former chief minister of Gujarat state, of which Ahmedabad is the main city. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hails from Gujarat, has visited the site and Air India Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson also arrived in the early hours of Friday. The company has said the investigation would take time. Planemaker Boeing has said a team of experts is ready to go to India to help in the probe. It was the first crash for the Dreamliner, a wide-body airliner that began flying commercially in 2011, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. The plane that crashed on Thursday flew for the first time in 2013 and was delivered to Air India in January 2014, Flightradar24 said. The last fatal plane crash in India, the world's third-largest aviation market and its fastest growing, was in 2020 and involved Air India Express, the airline's low-cost arm. The formerly state-owned Air India was taken over by Indian conglomerate Tata Group in 2022, and merged with Vistara - a joint venture between the group and Singapore Airlines - in 2024.
