PENAMPANG: Sabah will play host to two major events this month, the Borneo Country Music Festival & Food Fest 2025 and KaamatanGawai 2025. Both organised by the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). KCCI President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda said the Borneo Country Music Festival & Food Fest would be the first of its kind in the State, offering a vibrant blend of culture, music, entrepreneurship and cuisine.
Advertisement Scheduled to be held at Buhavan Square on June 27, the event will feature performances by school bands, local talents and headline musical acts. A special preview evening will take place on June 26 during the sound check. 'Country music is a sound that resonates across generations in Borneo. It's not about trends, it's about timeless stories and rhythm,' said Ladislaus during a press conference at the KCCI Office on Tuesday. He said the food fest would showcase stalls run by young local entrepreneurs offering a creative range of street food, from gourmet burgers to modern Sabahan fusion cuisine. 'We're not looking for just the usual fried noodles or fried bananas. We want to see creativity expressed in culinary form,' he added. Simultaneously, the KCCI–DCCI Golf Challenge will tee off at Sutera Harbour, featuring 134 golfers. The winner will move closer to claiming permanent ownership of the prestigious inter-chamber trophy. On June 28, focus will shift towards business and development with a forum centred on the oil and gas sector. The forum will bring together regional leaders in environmental, social and governance (ESG), artificial intelligence (AI) and regulatory compliance. More than 30 exhibitors, including KKIP and Asia Euro will also participate, showcasing local processed goods, handicrafts, and innovations aimed at advancing the Borneo marketplace. The festivities will culminate with the KaamatanGawai Gala Dinner at the ITCC Grand Ballroom, featuring performances and dignitaries from both Sabah and Sarawak. 'This event is more than just a celebration of the harvest season. It also serves as a barometer of business success,' said Ladislaus. Sabah prioritises agriculture as key driver of economic growth

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said agriculture contributed RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's GDP, making it the third largest sector in the state economy. He said this during the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. To boost food resilience, Hajiji said Sabah had revived the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year with the aim of raising rice self-sufficiency to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. He highlighted the role of technology such as the Internet of Things and smart farming in modernising agriculture and attracting younger generations to the sector. So far, Sabah's 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) have produced over 1,494 metric tonnes of food, generating more than RM4.32 million in returns. Journalists told to embrace AI

Kota Kinabalu: Journalists are urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their daily news reporting tasks to keep up with the demands of today's fast-paced digital world. Director of the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR), Roslan Ariffin, said the ongoing wave of digitalisation requires media practitioners to continuously upgrade their skills and adapt to emerging technologies. 'The media industry is becoming more challenging. Journalists must be capable of adapting to the latest technologies – it's the key to staying relevant and moving forward,' he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Smart Journalism: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting course held here. The three-day course, which began on Tuesday (July 29), was attended by 25 media practitioners from various agencies across Sabah. He said the course covered AI applications for idea generation, drafting, audio transcription, and complex data analysis – all of which are revolutionary tools to enhance news reporting. 'Over the past three days, participants were introduced to a wide range of AI tools designed to make journalism faster, more efficient and impactful. 'This is what IPPTAR aims to provide – spreading knowledge and technology to more media professionals nationwide. 'It's crucial for all journalists to keep learning and improving, especially as the media landscape continues to evolve,' he added. Speaking to reporters after the event, Roslan said IPPTAR is committed to creating more learning opportunities for media practitioners in Sabah to support the growth of the local journalism scene. He said one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today is the spread of fake news. 'We are in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly. As ethical journalists, we must steer clear of false reporting and stay committed to our responsibility as dedicated media professionals. 'Sabah, in particular, is heading into its 17th State Election soon, so reporters are under pressure to cover the news extensively. I urge them to apply all the AI knowledge gained during this course to produce quality, ethical reporting,' he said. RM13 million agreements to develop the agri sector

KOTA KINABALU: A total of RM13 million in agreements were sealed through three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in an effort to develop the agriculture sector and enhance the country's food security. The MoUs were signed between the Keningau Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK Keningau) and Absolute Moringa Sdn Bhd (AM), the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) and Desa Keningau Livestock Industries Sdn Bhd (DKLI), and between LPP and Sawit Kinabalu Farm Products Sdn Bhd (SKFP). Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the first agreement, worth RM10 million, involves collaboration between PPK Keningau and AM in marketing and distributing agricultural inputs to empower the business and supply services of farmers' organisations for both members and non-members in Sabah. The second agreement, valued at RM3 million, was signed between LPP and DKLI to carry out a corn grain planting project, aimed at boosting local corn production through a corporate approach and technology transfer. 'I was informed the project will begin soon. It has long-term impact, particularly in reducing our dependency on imported corn grain used as livestock feed, which would indirectly increase supply and lower farming costs. 'The third MoU between LPP and SKFP involves technical cooperation for the implementation of an integrated oil palm-cattle breeding project. 'Although the project has no monetary value, it serves to optimise land use for integrated livestock farming under several high-impact initiatives,' he said after the MoU ceremony involving LPP in conjunction with the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration. Arthur said the collaborations are expected to bring significant benefits, especially to local communities. 'These high-impact projects reflect strong cooperation between the Government and private sector in driving agricultural growth and enhancing food security. 'At the same time, by increasing the production of resources like corn grain, we can reduce import dependency, improve economic outcomes and make livestock farming more accessible and cost-effective for local farmers,' he added.
