FM praises distinguished relations with Spain
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has praised distinguished relations between Egypt and Spain, underscoring the importance of working to implement the outcomes of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's successful visit to Madrid in February, during which bilateral relations were elevated to a strategic partnership. Abdelatty made the remarks during his meeting on Monday, July 14, 2025, with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on the sidelines of the 5th EU-Southern Neighborhood Ministerial Meeting in Brussels to discuss bilateral relations and developments in the Middle East, the foreign ministry said in a statement. The Egyptian foreign minister pointed out the two countries' consensus as regards ending conflicts and establishing regional peace and stability. In this regard, he praised Spain's stances in support of international law principles and its honorable position on the Palestinian cause. Abdelatty commended Spain's supportive role for Egypt within the European Union, particularly in implementing pillars of the strategic and comprehensive partnership between both sides. He also welcomed the approval of a macro-financial assistance (MFA) package for Egypt worth €4 billion. The two ministers exchanged views regarding the Union for the Mediterranean Charter's ministerial meeting. Regarding regional developments, the foreign minister reviewed Egypt's efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. He reiterated Egypt's firm stance against the displacement of Palestinians from their land and highlighted ongoing preparations for hosting the Cairo ministerial conference on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. On the situation in Sudan, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Sudan's security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He stressed the need to preserve and support Sudan's national institutions and affirmed Egypt's keenness to interact with various regional and international efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire and ending the humanitarian suffering of the brotherly Sudanese people.

President Sisi expresses appreciation over Trump's statements on GERD
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed his appreciation towards US President Donald Trump's position on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) dispute. 'Egypt values the statement by President Donald Trump, which demonstrates the seriousness of the US —under President Trump's leadership—in exerting efforts to resolve conflicts and end wars,' Sisi wrote on his official facebook account on Tuesday. 'Egypt reaffirms its confidence in President Trump's ability to address complex challenges and to advance peace, stability, and security across the globe, whether in Ukraine, the Palestinian territory, or Africa. 'Egypt also appreciates President Trump's keenness on reaching a just agreement that safeguards the interests of all parties regarding the Ethiopian Dam, as well as his recognition of the Nile as a source of life for Egypt,' Sisi added. During his Monday meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, at the White House, the US President stated that: 'Ethiopia has built a dam that can prevent water from flowing into Egypt, and the problem is that we are the ones who financed the construction of this dam, and I believe that we will reach a solution regarding the Renaissance Dam.' Commenting on this, a member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs and Vice President of the Egyptian Council for African Affairs, Salah Halima, affirmed that Trump possesses the experience and capabilities necessary to resolve the GERD crisis. Trump pushes for peace Halima said that Trump has declared his willingness to take active and effective action to resolve regional and international issues and conflicts, in the hopes of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. He praised President Sisi's positive and constructive response to Trump's move. The Director of Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, Ayman Abdel-Wahab, emphasized that Trump's statements regarding GERD show his desire to present himself as a leader capable of resolving and ending conflicts – despite stumbling blocks thus far. He said that Trump is aware of the seriousness of this issue towards stability in the Horn of Africa region, given the tense Egyptian-Sudanese relations with Ethiopia. Abdel-Wahab explained that the Trump administration could help reach an institutional and legal agreement that guarantees Egypt's rights, noting however that this requires America's genuine interest. The advisor to Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies and an expert on African affairs, Amany al-Tawil said that Trump's statements come as part of his efforts to market himself domestically and internationally as a leader capable of dealing with complex global problems. She warned that Trump's previous efforts on the dam issue 'have yielded nothing,' noting that these statements should be viewed 'very cautiously' as they are linked to Trump's perception of his overall performance and his self-image as 'a great president or president of the greatest country.'

Egypt FM pushes diplomacy to de-escalate Middle East tensions - Foreign Affairs
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of high-level diplomatic calls this week aimed at reducing regional tensions, the Foreign Ministry stated Wednesday. Abdelatty spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi. The discussions focused on advancing peaceful solutions to regional crises, including the need to resume stalled talks over Iran's nuclear programme. Abdelatty stressed that there is no military solution to the ongoing disputes and underscored the importance of de-escalation and diplomacy, particularly between Iran and Israel. The calls come amid renewed uncertainty around nuclear negotiations. On Monday, Iran stated it had 'no specific date' set for a meeting with the US regarding its nuclear programme, following its conflict with Israel that derailed previous talks. 'For now, no specific date, time or location has been determined,' Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said of a possible meeting between Araghchi and Witkoff. On Saturday, Iran said it was reviewing conditions for resuming talks, while insisting on its right to enrich uranium. Tehran began enriching uranium to 60 percent in 2021—well above the 3.67 percent limit set by the 2015 nuclear deal, but below the 90 percent needed for weapons-grade material. On Gaza Abdelatty also discussed Gaza with Witkoff, reiterating Egypt's push for a comprehensive ceasefire and a captive-prisoner exchange to allow for urgent humanitarian aid access to the war-devastated enclave. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government was working toward a 60-day ceasefire in the Strip. Egypt is currently hosting delegations from Egypt, Qatar, and Israel for two days of talks in Cairo, focused on delivering aid and advancing ceasefire efforts. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas resumed last week in Doha, though core disagreements persist. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's rejection of proposals to establish a 'humanitarian city' in southern Gaza or make any demographic changes to the occupied Palestinian territories. He also presented Cairo's proposal to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction, aligned with the Arab-Islamic plan for rebuilding Gaza after a ceasefire is secured. Witkoff praised Egypt's role under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in promoting regional security and described Egypt as a key US strategic partner. Egypt, alongside Qatar and the US, remains a lead mediator in the war, now in its 21st month. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
