Ericsson's Indy 500 podium vanishes with post-race penalty

TimesLIVE27-05-2025

IndyCar announced penalties for three drivers and their teams on Monday after post-race inspections at Sunday's Indianapolis 500, which included runner-up Marcus Ericsson dropping to 31st place.
Ericsson's Andretti Global teammate Kyle Kirkwood, who finished sixth, was penalised down to 32nd, and British driver Callum Ilott of Prema Racing was dropped from 12th to 33rd and last place in the field.
IndyCar said the No 27 and No 28 cars of Ericsson and Kirkwood were found to have illegal modifications made to their energy management system covers. In Ilott's case, his No 90 car did not meet the minimum endplate height and location specification.
Ericsson, a Swede who won the 2022 Indianapolis 500, held the lead late in Sunday's race before Alex Palou of Spain passed him on his way to winning his first Indy 500 by 0.6822 seconds.
The penalties mean David Malukas of AJ Foyt Racing is credited with a second-place finish. Mexico's Pato O'Ward (Arrow McLaren) finished third, Sweden's Felix Rosenqvist (Meyer Shank Racing) was fourth and Santino Ferrucci (AJ Foyt) moved into fifth.
The penalised drivers must forfeit their prize money and championship points from their original finishes. They are allowed to appeal the penalties.

Former Spurs players back Postecoglou amid uncertain future

As Tottenham Hotspur ponder the fate of manager Ange Postecoglou, former players of the Premier League side have thrown their support behind the Australian and urged the club's ownership to stay the course. Postecoglou guided Tottenham to Europa League victory last month, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought, but they also endured their worst domestic season for nearly half a century and finished 17th in the Premier League. The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week. Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make. 'I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou,' Vega said on social media on Monday. Thankyou Ange Postecoglou — Alex (@xAlexTHFC) June 2, 2025 'He has accomplished the impossible — something others with more significant credentials have failed to achieve.' Ex-Spurs and Ireland striker Robbie Keane said that in the eyes of the fans the Europa League win had made up for the woeful domestic campaign, and that Postecoglou had backed up his statement that he always wins something in his second season. In his first season at the club, Spurs were top of the league in October but they eventually finished fifth and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup. 'There's no getting away from that [league form]. I think everybody, certainly the manager, has admitted that,' Keane told talkSPORT last week. 'But I tell you what — as someone who's played for Spurs, and my two kids are Spurs fans, I don't think anyone cared at the end, because winning the trophy — at the end of the day it's about winning. 'He's got a lot of stick, Ange, and to be fair to him, he's backed it up by his comment that he made about the second season and he put himself under a lot of pressure but he's done it. So I think now — give him time.' In an interview with Stats Perform, former Tottenham and US goalkeeper Brad Friedel called on the club to back Postecoglou in the transfer window. 'I hope for Postecoglou they keep him and let him build in the summer and see how the start of the season goes,' the American said.

Lego Technic unveils Aston Martin Valkyrie

Lego has unveiled its latest Technic set, which is a detailed recreation of the Aston Martin Valkyrie, courtesy of a partnership with the British marque. Comprising more than 700 pieces, the set meticulously replicates the Valkyrie's iconic aerodynamic shape. The physical model is part of a broader tie-in that includes integration into the mobile racing game Asphalt Legends Unite. Players will be able to race both the real-world Valkyrie and its Lego counterpart in-game, as part of a collaboration between Lego, Aston Martin, and developer Gameloft. The actual Valkyrie needs a little introduction. Co-developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing's Adrian Newey, it combines Formula One technology with road-going usability if that term can be loosely applied to a car producing 838kW and sprinting from 0–100km/h in just 2.5s. Its naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12, built by Cosworth, revs to over 11 000r/min and is assisted by an electric motor in the hybrid system. Related: Lego Unboxes 10 New F1-Inspired Speed Champions Kits In Lego form, the Valkyrie is scaled down but includes several working features. These include a V12 engine with moving pistons, a steering system controlled by a top-mounted lever, and functional gullwing-style doors. It also features the same Podium Green livery seen on the real car. Lego states the set is designed for advanced builders, with the complexity of the build reflecting the technical ambition of the original vehicle. The model is due to go on sale from July 1. As for the gaming crossover, it's not the first time Lego has collaborated with a racing title to extend its physical sets into virtual experiences. However, combining the high-performance Valkyrie with a Lego version may help reach a broader audience, particularly younger fans who may be more familiar with racing games than the hypercar segment. While collaborations like these may be seen as brand-building exercises, they also demonstrate the growing trend of blending physical and digital experiences in the automotive world. For those who cannot afford a multimillion-rand hypercar, a scaled-down version made by Lego offers a far more accessible way to engage with one of the most ambitious cars ever built.
