CPM protests in Trichy after farmer killed in wild boar attack

Trichy: The CPM and its farmers' wing staged a protest near Trichy General Hospital on Thursday, demanding relief for the family of a farmer mauled to death and another injured in wild boar attacks earlier this week. On Monday, M Ganapathy, 70, of Uthamarseeli village, was attacked by a boar near his farm, suffering severe abdominal and hand injuries. Another farmer, Sahadevan, was injured in a separate attack near Kilikoodu. Ganapathy died at the GH on Thursday. Protesters refused to allow Ganapathy's autopsy until relief was assured. Officials, including Trichy forest range officer V P Subramaniyam, Srirangam RDO Srinivasan, and Tahsildar Selva Ganesan, assured recommendations for ₹10 lakh compensation to Ganapathy's family and ₹50,000 medical aid to Sahadevan. The activists also demanded that wild boars in Andanallur villages be captured and preventive measures taken. Following the assurance, the autopsy was carried out, and Ganapathy's body was handed over for final rites in the evening. Will keep the vigil up: Docs mark anniv at RG Kar, outside

1 2 Kolkata: It was on the same night a year ago when a mob stormed into the RG Kar campus when the city was observing 'Reclaim the Night', demanding "justice" for the trainee doctor. While the campus has gradually picked up pieces to start afresh, the unprovoked mob attack continues to haunt doctors, nurses and health workers on the campus. As organisations replayed another 'Reclaim the Night' on Thursday, the RG Kar campus saw an increase in security to prevent a repeat of the mob running amok in the hospital. Doctors and many civil society organisations said they would keep the vigil up until they are satisfied that "justice" has been done to the rape-murder victim. Many junior doctors took part in the 'Reclaim the Night' on Thursday as a gesture of protest against the vandalism and the rape-murder. "'Reclaim the Night' was aimed at demanding justice for Abhaya and ensuring women's safety. We need to keep the vigil up against such heinous crimes and also the mob attack to silence the protest," said a junior doctor. "The night of the mob attack continues to haunt me when doctors, nurses, other healthcare workers, along with patients, had to flee for their lives from the emergency department. Presence of CISF has made the campus trouble-free now," said an emergency medical officer. On Thursday, senior doctor organisations like Service Doctors' Forum, Medical Service Centre, and Nurses Unity, along with various civil society organisations, held a convention at Yuba Kendra Moulali, pledging to keep the vigil up by setting up an organisation — 'Voice of Abhaya, Voice of Women'. Other senior doctor bodies like Joint Platform of Doctors, which is a part of 'Abhaya Mancha', took part in the 'Reclaim the Night', where representatives of West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front also participated.
