Inside story of Congress's 'Gayab' debacle: How a tweet sparked row in party

India Today01-05-2025

The Congress courted controversy on Tuesday when it posted a cartoon of a headless figure dressed like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and captioned it as 'Gayab' (vanished). The party posted the controversial poster in response to PM Modi's absence from the all-party meeting held to discuss last week's Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, the Congress has struggled to maintain a unified message. While the party has been trying to send out a message of solidarity, a series of statements by senior leaders and social media posts disrupted the narrative. The 'Gayab' poster targeting PM Modi went viral and sparked and internal backlash.advertisementThe post, originating from the social media department under the Congress's media wing, caught many by surprise for contradicting the party's public messaging. The cartoon was deleted after a huge backlash.DEFENDING THE INDEFENSIBLE?
When the cartoon went viral, the Congress's post drew sharp criticism online and discomfort within the party, with many calling it distasteful. Despite internal unease, the Congress's social media team defended the post through unofficial handles.
According to sources, social media head Supriya Shrinate refused to delete it even after senior leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera urged her to reconsider. It was only after Rahul Gandhi, during a visit to Raebareli, intervened personally that the post was finally taken down.REPEAT OFFENDERadvertisementThe Congress's social media department has previously courted controversy. During the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra, it posted an image of burning brown shorts targeting the RSS. In another case, it misquoted veteran leader Sonia Gandhi during the Karnataka elections, attributing the word "sovereignty" to her, prompting attacks from the BJP.Shrinate was also at the centre of another row when her Instagram handle posted a comment mocking actor-politician Kangana Ranaut's candidacy in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi. Shrinate later claimed she wasn't behind the post.PARTY WARY OF REPEATED GAFFESFollowing the recent 'Gayab' controversy, the Congress issued a rare warning that included its social media wing. A letter from KC Venugopal directed all leaders and official handles to strictly adhere to the party line and avoid off-the-cuff remarks, calling any deviation a breach of discipline."The Congress has long struggled with leaders chasing publicity, but such missteps on social media magnify the damage," said a senior party leader. With the nation in mourning, Congress finds itself in damage-control mode - again.

Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad stages protest against land transfer to Adani

Mumbai Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad led a protest on Sunday (June 8, 2025) against handing over the Mother Dairy land parcel in Mumbai's Kurla to the Adani group for Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL). She demanded to use the land for a botanical garden instead of a rehabilitation project, saying, 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi surrenders when American president Donald Trump calls, why CM Devender Fadnavis surrenders when Modi calls for Adani.' Former Minister Ms. Gaikwad alleged the BJP government is constantly ignoring the opposition of the locals and letting Adani swallow the whole of Mumbai during the protest. 'The Kurla Mother Dairyland is environmentally sensitive. Kurla Mother Dairy houses hundred-year-old trees, locals are demanding a botanical garden to protect them, yet it is transferred to Adani for infrastructure purposes at a nominal rate,' she added. Days ago, the Maharashtra Cabinet's decision to transfer an 8.05-hectare Mother Dairy land parcel to the DRPPL triggered opposition from locals and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders. Kurla Dairy is among the three dairies of Mumbai, where milk production stopped over the years, and the land was made available for other projects. Many Congress leaders and party functionaries, including MLA Jyoti Gaikwad, Congress spokesperson Suresh Chandra Rajhans, and Mumbai General Secretary Mahendra Mungekar, along with their supporters and activists, staged the peaceful protest in Kurla. Ms. Gaikwad said, 'While we were peacefully protesting, once again the Modani (Modi and Adani) government had sent a large police force to suppress the voice of the people. What justice is it that the police stopped the peaceful protest with the force of police force? The government is providing security to thieves, but we will not be swayed by this oppression. We will continue to fight against this Adani government for the rights of Mumbai.' She called the transfer of land a part of a 'conspiracy' wherein the plan is to destroy the lives of lakhs of Dharavikars and acquire 600 acres of land in Dharavi, along with Kurla Mother Dairy, saltpans, and Deonar dumping ground land. She alleged government will also seize land parcels in Air India Colony, Bandra Reclamation, Behrampada, and Motilal Nagar without taking the locals into confidence.

Spirit of unity among Telugus paramount: CM

Hyderabad: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while affirming that the Telugu community held a unique position in the country, urged leaders from the Telugu states to jointly work with a spirit of unity and togetherness to take Telugu to number one position in the country's growth. He was addressing a gathering at the release of the Telugu version of Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya's autobiography 'Prajala Kathe Naa Atmakatha' (The story of the people of Telangana is my autobiography) here on Sunday. Naidu recalled that Telangana was previously part of the Nizam State, while Andhra Pradesh was under the Madras Presidency. Initially, both regions were united as Andhra Pradesh. Eventually, they became two separate states: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. However, he emphasized the importance of unity, stating that "Telugu jathi okkate" (Telugus are one) should always be our guiding principle. He noted that while political parties may have differing opinions and some leaders may have delivered effectively during their tenure, the spirit of unity among Telugus remained paramount. The country's future looks promising under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Just as the Jewish diaspora earned a name for itself in the world, "there is a need to take forward the Telugu people into a brighter future." For this, "we need to emulate the spirit of Bandaru Dattatreya," he observed. Striking a note of nostalgia at the event's venue, he recalled how efforts had been made to invite former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to inaugurate the HI-TEC City, adding Cyberabad district to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. However, while IT companies were housed in Cyberabad, "Silparamama and Silpakala Vedika were established to showcase the Telugu culture and traditions," he added. Naidu stated that Bandaru Dattatreya had endeared himself to everyone and exemplified the qualities of a true gentleman. The Chief Minister remarked that it took courage for a politician to declare that his story was the story of the people. This statement reflects a deep connection and bond with the community forged over decades of his life's journey. The Chief Minister stated that while Dattatreya might be associated with Hindutva, his true essence embodied the spirit of Bharatiya culture. He exemplified the unity in diversity that characterized our country. This quality had elevated him from an ordinary activist to a national-level leader. Reflecting on Dattatreya's contributions during the Emergency period and his dedicated service as an RSS pracharak during the Diviseema Cyclone, the Chief Minister acknowledged the numerous challenges he had faced throughout his journey. He brought the spirit of unity and diversity, launching the Alai Balai programme to bring leaders of all parties together and made him a friend of all without an enemy in the two Telugu states. His political life will be remembered as an ideal life, he noted. Naidu, recalling the foreward of PM Modi wrote to the book, said he held several positions in the party, MLA, MP, Union Minister, and governor of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. However, he remained an ordinary worker, he said. Naidu recalled that he had lost count of the letters Dattatreya had written to him when he was the chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh. He earned the rare opportunity to work with great personalities in the Sangh and Vajpayee, Murli Manohar Joshi, LK Advani, M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh, and Narendra Modi. However, he remained leading an ordinary life. Further, he noted how Dattatreya worked for the development of Hyderabad. Besides Union Minister Kishan Reddy, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. K Laxman, Tripura Governor, and former BJP state chief Indrasena Reddy contributed to the development of Hyderabad He said that the autobiography of Dattatreya, detailing life experiences of working in the southern and northern India would be an inspiration, setting an example to the people and future generations.
