Pirates rack up 14 hits, extend Tigers' slide

July 23 - Spencer Horwitz, Tommy Pham and Bryan Reynolds each had three hits and two RBIs to lead the host Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
Horwitz recorded his second consecutive three-hit game and reached base four times as the Pirates won for the second straight time to open a three-game series. Detroit lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Horwitz, Pham and Reynolds highlighted a 14-hit game for Pittsburgh. Ke'Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz contributed two hits apiece.
The Pirates' offense backed up a strong start from Mitch Keller (4-10). The right-hander gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings.
The runs Keller surrendered all came on Jake Rogers' three-run homer to center field, which cut the Pirates' lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning.
The long ball was Rogers' second of the season and broke the Tigers' 14-inning scoreless streak.
Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres each had three hits for Detroit. Jahmai Jones delivered a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth off Caleb Ferguson, who allowed his first home run of the season in his 43rd appearance.
Detroit's Trey Sweeney walked and Torres singled in the ninth, but Pittsburgh closer David Bednar shut the door, striking out Wenceel Perez and Riley Greene to pick up his 15th save.
Horwitz's two-run double with the bases loaded in the second off Tigers starter Casey Mize (9-4) opened the scoring.
Mize struggled for the second consecutive start, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk while striking out five over four innings. In his prior start, Mize gave up six runs in three innings against the Seattle Mariners on July 12.
In the third, Cruz doubled with one out. Hayes then reached on a ground ball to third after first baseman Torkelson couldn't pick clean a throw from Zach McKinstry. On the play, Cruz took advantage of a slow response by Torkelson to make it all the way to the plate and give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
Pittsburgh added two more in the fourth on RBI singles by Reynolds and Pham. Reynolds delivered another RBI single. Cruz then doubled, and Pham was thrown out at the plate.
Reynolds, Pham and Hayes had RBI hits in the sixth inning as Pittsburgh re-established a five-run lead.

NHL player and mascot charged by bear while shooting video in Alaskan river

This is the dramatic moment an NHL player and his team mascot were charged by a bear while shooting a video in an Alaskan river. Seattle Kraken forward John Hayden and their troll mascot Buoy were shooting a fishing segment when a bear emerged from the woods and charged at them, sending the crew running. Fortunately it pulled up short. Hayden joked that the bear was interested in Buoy's unusual look. Hayden, who was drafted in 2013, has been with the Kraken since 2022 and recently signed a two-year extension.

New York Yankees brutally cut Marcus Stroman in shock move after mass MLB trade deadline overhaul

The New York Yankees made a shock cut from their bullpen Friday following a flurry of activity at the MLB trade deadline. The Pinstripes made a splash Thursday when they made a number of blockbuster additions to their bullpen before the trade deadline, acquiring David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camilo Doval. However, one mainstay of their pitching rotation became a casualty of the Yankees' moves as the team announced Friday afternoon that Marcus Stroman has been released. More to follow.

Danica Patrick weighs in on Sydney Sweeney's 'anti-woke' American Eagle ad after furious backlash

Motorsports legend Danica Patrick has entered the fray on Sydney Sweeney 's controversial American Eagle ad, not sure why people are upset with the brand's latest campaign. Last week, the company rolled out its fall commercial lineup featuring the 27-year-old in various poses and scenarios with the tagline, 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans'. The obvious reference to her 'genes' didn't sit well with many people on social media, who accused the ads of being a racial dog whistle. Patrick was not in that camp, months after she was on the campaign trail helping Donald Trump get back to the White House. 'Can anyone tell me what's wrong with the new AE ads?! Very confused,' Patrick posted on her Instagram story. Sweeney's ad is still in the public eye with billboards and in storefronts nationwide despite the backlash. American Eagle Chief Marketing Officer Craig Brommers said the campaign is designed to be flashier than competitors' and features Sweeney as one of the most recognizable young stars of the moment Patrick is not the only one to come to Sweeney's aid in the situation, as WWE legend Sgt. Slaughter posted to his X account earlier this week of the 'Euphoria' actress: 'Attention (Sydney Sweeney), YOU GO GIRL & That's An Order!!' Slaughter, born Robert Remus, is a former WWF Heavyweight Champion and wrestled from 1972 to 2014. Last Friday, the 76-year-old made an appearance on SmackDown during a tribute to the late Hulk Hogan, who died last week of a heart attack. While Remus has made it known that he's in Sweeney's corner, much of the internet is still debating the intent behind the advertisement. ESPN analyst David Dennis Jr took to social media, posting his opinion: 'I didn't think anything of the Sydney Sweeney ads. 'But then ACTUAL SCHOLARS ON MESSAGING, EUGENICS AND FASCISM explained what was going on then yes I understood and became pretty mortified because hey sometimes IT'S GOOD TO LISTEN TO EXPERTS'. In a sarcastic post, Dennis Jr continued: 'I'm just happy that these AE ads are making it safe for conventionally attractive blue eyed blonde women to be accepted by society again. They're no longer the scourges of society they once were! FINALLY!' The adverts have divided fans, with one critic calling the clip 'one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we've seen and heard in a while.' ESPN analyst David Dennis Jr has lashed out at Sydney Sweeney's controversial advert An article from Salon on the backlash noted that the phrase 'great genes' is 'historically used to celebrate whiteness, thinness and attractiveness' while also branding the campaign 'tone-deaf'. But Alexandria Hurley, a Las Vegas-based publicist, speculated to that the idea to stir the pot was not a mistake at all. 'From a PR perspective, what we're seeing from Sydney Sweeney isn't a 'misstep' or 'Pepsi moment.' It's a calculated brand evolution. The idea that this ad slipped through the cracks underestimates both her and her team,' she explained.
