Azamgarh got new identity under BJP: CM
Azamgarh/Gorakhpur: Accusing the previous govts of turning Azamgarh into a "terror hub", Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said that BJP's double engine govt brought major development to the district giving it a new identity and making it the fortress of "indomitable courage" under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The CM on Friday inaugurated the 91.35-km long Gorakhpur Link Expressway, built at a cost of Rs 7,283 crore, from both its start and end points in Azamgarh and Gorakhpur, respectively, and said that the project would boost connectivity and redefine growth.
The expressway, which connects Gorakhpur to Lucknow, will reduce travel time to just 3.5 hours, and will also bring down the travel time from Gorakhpur to Delhi by two hours.
Besides improving connectivity, the expressway will have industrial clusters along it which will accelerate development in eastern UP. Hitting out at the previous state govts, Yogi claimed that they used to "partner with D-company and Dawood gang instead of development, breached security and made Azamgarh a stronghold of terror"."Before 2017, people did not take the name of Azamgarh as the district once struggled with an identity crisis despite having given two chief ministers to the state.

They (opposition parties) aligned with underworld elements instead of prioritising development and turned Azamgarh into a hub of terror," he said.
"They joined hands with the D-Company and Dawood's gang, compromising with the state's security," the CM alleged, recalling the murder of Ajit Rai in 2007-08 at Shibli National College for standing up for 'Vande Mataram'. "Now, nobody would dare take law into their own hands," he said.
"After 2017, the double-engine govt gave a new identity and recognition to Azamgarh's saree, black pottery, and the music heritage of Hariharpur. After Nirahua and Neelam Sonkar became members of parliament, the district witnessed a rapid wave of development," Yogi said.
Speaking about the infrastructural development in the state under his govt, Yogi said that in 2017, there were only two expressways, Yamuna Expressway and Agra–Lucknow Expressway, adding that the latter had to be completed by the BJP govt.
"Now, the state also boasts of the 340km Purvanchal Expressway, the 300-km Bundelkhand Expressway, and the 91-km Gorakhpur Link Expressway. In addition to these, work is underway on six more expressways, including the 600km Ganga Expressway, Lucknow-Kanpur, and the Ballia link expressway," he added.
The CM said that the Delhi-Meerut Expressway had already cut down the travel time between the two cities from three hours to just 40-45 minutes.
"The Ganga Expressway will be inaugurated by the PM by the end of this year. By 2047, when India becomes a developed nation, UP will play a leading role as a developed and self-reliant state," Yogi said.
"Before 2017, roads in UP were in such poor condition that it was hard to distinguish the road from the potholes. The foundation stone for the Purvanchal Expressway had been laid, but land had not been acquired. The previous govt wanted to build a 110m wide expressway for Rs 15,200 crore, but the double-engine govt built a wider, 120m expressway for Rs 11,800 crore," he said.
Drawing a comparison between UP before 2017 and after, the CM spoke about the recent recruitments of 60,244 police personnel, and said that for the first time, youth from every caste and religion, including 12,045 girls, were selected for govt jobs without any recommendations or bribes.
"Before 2017, 'chacha-bhatija' used to go out for extortion, but now it's 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas'. We are developing industrial clusters along expressways to provide jobs to local youths and giving them the respect and recognition they deserve across the country and the world.
Today, the youth no longer struggle for an identity. UP now has 16 airports, including four international airports, and four-lane connectivity across the state," he said.
He added that the BJP would not allow national and state security to be compromised under any circumstances and referred to Operation Sindoor, surgical strikes, and air strikes as examples of the resolve of 'New India'.
At the other end of the Expressway, where the CM addressed another gathering at Bhagwanpur toll plaza, he spoke about the benefits the expressway would bring to Gorakhpur and other parts of eastern UP.
He said that in the past eight years, Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) had attracted investments worth Rs 15,000 crore, generating employment for nearly 40,000 local youth. "With the Gorakhpur Link Expressway now operational, and with Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, and Ganga expressways set to be functional by the end of this year, the UP government is building a network that will redefine growth in the state," he said.
"Who would have imagined that areas like Belghat, Khajni and Sikriganj would one day be connected by an expressway? Today, this vision has become reality. While southern Gorakhpur once witnessed large-scale migration, the region is now witnessing signs of industrial growth and job creation, with investment proposals already pouring in," Yogi said.
The CM also announced that President Droupadi Murmu would inaugurate the state's first AYUSH University in Bhathat, Gorakhpur, on June 30.
He also invited people to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21 (Saturday). "Yoga is India's ancient gift to the world, and thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it received global recognition 11 years ago. Let's adopt a healthy routine by embracing yoga. As our scriptures say, the body is the means to all pursuits, so keeping it healthy is our responsibility," he said.

Once branded as terror hub, Azamgarh now a fortress of courage, says Yogi Adityanath
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said people of Uttar Pradesh were earlier scared of taking the name of Azamgarh or identifying with the place but under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has become the fortress of 'indomitable courage'. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurating the Gorakhpur Link Expressway in Azamgarh on Friday. (ANI PHOTO) He was speaking at the inauguration of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway at Salarpur in Azamgarh. Taking a swipe at the Opposition, he alleged the previous (non-BJP) governments used to partner with D-company and Dawood gang instead of nurturing development, breached security and made Azamgarh a stronghold of terror but added that there was a sea change now. 'They did not do development, they nurtured Mumbai's D Company, they nurtured Dawood's gang with D Company, they did partnerships with them, they used to break the security, whenever there was a terrorist incident, Azamgarh would get a bad name, these youth of mine faced an identity crisis,' he alleged. 'Today if someone breaches the security of the country, the identity of Azamgarh will not be in danger, rather the person creating the crisis will be given a ticket to hell. This is the new India and Prime Minister Modi has also given a clear message to the enemies of the country through Operation Sindoor that if someone instigates terrorism, inspires and encourages terrorism, then (we) will enter and kill them, whether it is a surgical strike, air strike or Operation Sindoor. The brave soldiers of India will enter the enemy's den, flush them out and finish them off,' Adityanath said 'Today, if someone tries to play with the security of the state, then Yamraj's ticket is already booked for him, ' Adityanath said. 'In 2007-08, Ajit Rai was murdered in Shibli National College for advocating the singing of Vande Mataram, but now no one can dare to do such a thing,' he said, adding that Azamgarh had to beg for its identity earlier but now the situation has changed. 'Remember what the conditions were eight years ago. The youth of UP and the residents of the state would suffer from an identity crisis. People used to feel scared to take the name of Azamgarh and UP,' he said. He also said, 'When Veer Kunwar Singh, the hero of the first war of independence in 1857, fought the British till Azamgarh to defeat them, there was no connectivity. If this Purvanchal Expressway had been there at that time, the people of Azamgarh, along with Veer Kunwar Singh, would have beaten the British and then this country would have become independent in 1857 itself. There was no connectivity at that time.' He further said the construction of the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Mahakumbh Prayagraj, the development of Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Kashi, Maa Vindhyavasini Dham and Chitrakoot Dham, all these are giving the state a new identity today. 'Our work has also started in Mathura-Vrindavan. Maharaja Suheldev University and Medical College in Azamgarh are strengthening the identity of culture,' he said. He mentioned the recruitment of 60,244 police personnel in Uttar Pradesh recently. The chief minister said that without recommendation or money, youth of every caste and community, including 12,045 women, have been recruited in Uttar Pradesh police in a transparent manner. Before 2017, uncle and nephew used to go out for recovery, but now Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas is happening, he alleged. After 2017, the double engine government gave a new identity to Azamgarh's saree, black pottery and Hariharpur's musical gharana, he said. Earlier, they were ignored, but when Nirahua (former Azamgarh MP Dinesh Lal Yadav) and Neelam Sonkar became MPs, development in the district picked up pace, he added. Yogi also saw a sand and photo exhibition about the construction work of the link expressway. In his address in Bhagwanpur, the chief minister further mentioned that over 2.16 lakh appointments have been made in the police department alone, with a total of more than 8.5 lakh government jobs filled in the last eight years. He praised Prime Minister Modi's vision for enabling the state to balance cultural heritage with modern development. He pointed to examples like Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya, and Chitrakoot, where the integration of tradition and progress is clearly visible. 'No society can move forward by forgetting its history,' he said, adding that the journey of heritage and development will continue together. PRESIDENT TO INAUGURATE UP'S FIRST AYUSH UNIVERSITY IN GORAKHPUR ON JUNE 30 Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced that Uttar Pradesh's first Ayush University, located in Bhathat, Gorakhpur, will be inaugurated by the President of India on June 30. Sharmila accuses Jagan of supporting ‘objectionable' comments by YSRCP cadre
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila has accused YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy of backing the objectionable and inflammatory remarks made by his party's supporters during his visit to Rentapalla in Palnadu district. 'Unfortunately, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy is supporting such violent statements instead of condemning them,' Mr. Sharmila told the media at the Congress office in the city on Friday. Earlier, she conducted a review meeting with the party cadre, discussing the current political situation, the troubles faced by party members, and strategies to strengthen the party in the region. Ms. Sharmila asserted that the Congress was the only party capable of holding the BJP accountable. She said while the TDP and the JSP have an alliance with the BJP, the YSRCP maintains ties with the BJP unofficially. She criticised the TDP, the JSP, and the YSRCP for supporting the BJP over the past decade, despite the Centre's failure to fulfil promises made during the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Ms. Sharmila demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak about the promised Special Category Status (SCS) for Andhra Pradesh, the completion of Polavaram project, and special financial packages for Uttarandhra and Rayalaseema. She urged him to address the concerns regarding privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP).

Israel Iran war: What does India import from Iran? THESE kitchen essentials may get costlier if war escalates
Tensions between Iran and Israel are at their highest peak right now. Both countries are attacking each other with missiles and drones and it seems like a full-fledge war could break out at any time. Thoight India may not be directly involved in the Iran-Israel conflict, but its economy could suffer if things get worse. Therefore, it's important to understand how it might impact India. India has trade relations with both Iran and Israel. This means India buys and sells many goods to and from both countries. So, if war breaks out between them, it will not create problem for the Middle East but India could also feel the heat, especially in terms of prices and supply disruptions. What India buys from Iran In the past, Iran was one of the biggest suppliers of crude oil to India. But after US sanctions in 2019, India stopped importing oil from Iran. However, India imports liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Iran, the fuels used in homes and industries. India also imports dry fruits like almonds, pistachios, and dates from Iran. Along with that, Iranian saffron is considered one of the best in the world, India imports that too. Vegetable products such as gums, resins and lacquers are also imported. Iran is also famous for its handmade carpets and handicrafts. Besides this, India imports methanol, petroleum bitumen, and other chemicals from Iran, which are used in industries and construction work. It also imports Salt, sulphur, clay, stone, plaster, lime and cement. What India sells to Iran Iran is one of the biggest buyers of Indian Basmati, having purchased over 8.55 lakh metric tonnes in 2024–25, worth nearly Rs. 6,374 crore. In strong trade years, Iran has made up 30 to 35 per cent of all Basmati exports from India. On the other hand, India exports several important items to Iran including basmati rice, tea, sugar, medicines, and machinery. Rice (Basmati), tea, sugar, and fresh fruits are significant export items. A notable quantity of drugs and pharmaceuticals are also exported to Iran. India exports various types of machinery, electrical machinery, and electronic equipment to Iran. Artificial jewelry, rubber products, and certain chemicals are also part of the export basket. Processed minerals are another category of goods that India exports to Iran. What could go wrong if war breaks out If the conflict between Iran and Israel turns into a full-blown war, global oil prices could shoot up. That would directly affect India, since we import most of our crude oil from other countries. This could make petrol and diesel more expensive, and when fuel prices go up, the cost of transporting goods also rises. This would lead to higher prices for food, groceries, and daily essentials. In short, even though the war would be happening far away, its impact could be felt in every Indian household through higher inflation and supply shortages.
