Marvel Rivals Season 3: Our First Look at Phoenix Had Me Screaming 'WHAT?!'

CNET02-07-2025
As Marvel Rivals gets ready to kick off season 3 next week, we're getting our first glimpse at some of the upcoming changes. And, with respect to my poor beleaguered Blade bros, the biggest news for me is that Jean Grey, original member of the X-Men and sometimes terror of the cosmos, is joining the roster as Phoenix.
There's plenty more coming, including Blade in Season 3.5 next month, but Phoenix is the headliner for me, and here's our first look at what she can do.
Phoenix's abilities in Marvel Rivals
Phoenix joins as yet another duelist -- an already oversaturated role, but one that feels appropriate for her. She brings a mix of area-of-effect damage that can help chew through groups of enemies as well as mobility that lets her flit around the battlefield to find flank angles.
Phoenix's primary fire appears to instantly apply damage to enemies with no travel time (aka hitscan) and apply some kind of flame stacks to opponents, represented by up to three flame icons above their characters. In the trailer, heroes appeared to detonate when hit at full stacks, releasing a burst of additional damage around them.
Her alternate fire sends a rapid-fire burst of flame that creates a series of small explosions, similar to Hela's alternate fire. In the trailer, we see it used on a group of enemies with maximum flame stacks to detonate everyone and effectively burst down the entire opposing team at once.
I can't tell you exactly what's happening here, but whatever it is, it looks fun.

Her first ability is a quick dash. In the trailer, Phoenix uses it to jump backward, dodging an enemy Venom looking to crash down on her.
Her second ability appears to be a limited-duration flight, allowing Phoenix to freely fly around the battlefield for a few seconds. The flight is on a resource meter that recharges while Phoenix isn't flying.
Phoenix's ultimate is what made me scream. I've watched the trailer several times and my best description of how it appears to work is, "You crash to the ground, kill everyone in your way and explode." And I mean everyone -- in the trailer, we see Hela in her ultimate, wherein she flies up into the sky and her health jumps up to 1,000 HP, get erased when Phoenix ults through her. In addition to also killing Rocket and Psylocke in one shot, the ultimate also clears deployables like Rocket's rez beacon and Peni's nest while whittling Peni herself and Groot down to a sliver of health in the explosion.
Lore accurate Phoenix?

A mobile hitscan hero who with a stacking mechanic and a meteoric ultimate? Yeah, sign me up. Between this and Overwatch 2's Freja, this longtime support/strategist main may have officially turned into a damage/duelist main.
When does season 3 start?
Marvel Rivals season 3.0 is scheduled to start on Friday, July 11 UTC. Typically, this involves servers going down for a few hours around midnight PT before being turned back on for the new season in the very early morning.

What about Blade? Haven't we waited enough?
Rivals continues to make Blade fans wait, since that hero won't be added to the roster until season 3.5. But at least that's only a month away under the new season structure.
Rivals season 3 balance changes
In the Dev Visions vol. 7 video, Rivals devs gave us a quick breakdown of the upcoming balance changes, though we're still waiting on full details from official patch notes. Here's the quick breakdown, with any confirmed details in parentheses.
Buffs:
Venom
Thing (gains a new ability to jump to enemies, possibly knocking down fliers)
Namor (primary fire)
Scarlet Witch (ultimate)
Invisible Woman (healing efficiency)
Mantis (healing and ultimate utility)
Nerfs:
Emma Frost
Iron Man (poke potential)
Punisher (turret)
Mister Fantastic (survivability)
Loki (ultimate charge)
Ultron
Phoenix adds some literal firepower to Wolverine's attacks with the new team-up.

Team-up changes
Rivals is adding two new team-ups, tacking heroes onto two existing ones and removing two others (Storming Ignition and ESU Alumnus) from the game. It's also nerfing another. Here's the quick rundown:
New -- Primal Flame: Phoenix anchors to add damage over time and lifesteal to Wolverine's attacks after his leap.
New -- Ever-Burning Bond: Human Torch anchors to let Spider-Man shoot a burning web with a flaming tracer. (The flaming tracer stacks with Spidey's regular tracers, devs said.)
Updated -- Symbiote Shenanigans: Adds Hela, giving her Soul Drainer Hel Sphere slowing tendrils.
Updated -- Stark Protocol: Adds Squirrel Girl, giving her an explosive, homing gauntlet.
Updated -- Guardian Revival: Devs said they'd be nerfing some element of the Guardians' team-up.
Other things coming in season 3
The battle pass is getting some adjustments to account for shorter seasons. Battle passes still offer 10 skins, but you'll earn tokens at a faster rate to make it easier to progress through the entire battle pass in the shorter time period. Daily missions are also going away, with weekly missions shifting to permanent quests instead of being time-limited. Seasonal missions that offer large batches of tokens are also being added.
Rivals devs also announced a new competitive mode coming in season 3.5 but said we'd have to wait for any details about it.
The game is also adding accessories (which appear to be animated stickers that float above the KO notifications), new chroma options and visual effects for ultimate abilities. Perhaps the nicest quality of life change is the ability to mix & match MVP animations with any skins, instead of having certain MVP animations locked to specific skins.
Rivals needs a win
Season 3 is a major turning point for the hero shooter, marking the start of its new two-month seasons where we'll be getting new heroes every month -- one at the start of the season and one at midseason. The new cadence is an aggressive pace for expanding the game's roster, and threatens to keep the metagame churning even faster, assuming those new heroes are relevant at launch.
That's important because Rivals has been bleeding active players since launch. Based on SteamDB data, the start of each new half-season brings in fewer players than the previous. (For example, fewer players joined for season 2.5 than for 2.0.) Most games lose players over time, but for a live-service game, that kind of consistent drop is bad news because it means fewer players coming back each season to spend money on battle passes and cosmetics.
And while Rivals was a hit at launch, the game has struggled with player retention, whether it's due to in-game toxicity, role-based infighting, frustrating metagames or just generally losing the luster of being a brand-new game.
How do you fix that? Not easily, that's for certain. But adding an iconic member of the original X-Men and giving her fun gameplay in the form of mobility and unique mechanics can sure help.
I'll tell you this much: It's working on me.

The Fantastic Four cast leant on unlikely Marvel star for advice

There aren't many people in the world who can relate to being in a Marvel movie, but the Fantastic Four: First Steps cast knew who to turn to when they needed someone to talk to about the unique experience, they tell Yahoo UK. The film introduces Marvel's First Family — Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) — into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and follows their battle to protect Earth from dangerous new foes. Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson portray the film's villains, the Silver Surfer and cosmic being Galactus, and both make their debut alongside the Fantastic Four. The pressure of bringing these characters to life on the silver screen felt immense, but given the secrecy around the franchise it wasn't something they could divulge to just anyone — so instead they found the people who would understand. Ineson reveals: "I worked with Willem Dafoe recently, and when I got the part in this, we had a chat about it." Dafoe famously delivered perhaps one of the greatest villain performances of all time in a superhero film as the Green Goblin to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. "He said some interesting stuff about finding your thing in the middle of all the madness, and I think that that's what it's about. Whether it be the size of the project, the budget, the fan base, the costumes, there's a whole craziness to doing a Marvel movie, but you have to keep that kernel of truth that makes any bit of acting good and elevating it to the top stuff. "And so you've really gotta do the work exactly as you would on any other kind of project, but you've gotta make sure you do your bit amongst all these amazing, talented artists, designers, directors, cinematographers. They're all creating this amazing film, you've just got to make sure you keep the space to do your bit really truthfully in the middle of all that." Garner had a similar approach when she took on the role of Shalla-Bal, as she adds: "I have friends who have worked in Marvel and they've done motion-capture, they've done all that stuff. I haven't, this was my first time, and there's definitely truth to what [Ralph is] saying, [it's about] just finding something that's going to ground you because in general with movies there's a lot of distractions and there's always reminders that you're in a movie. "This isn't real, whether it's a Marvel movie or it's like a little indie movie, it's still movie. So you have to find things that ground you and make you feel like it's a reality like it's really real. "But also I guess with the motion capture the experience is very different than wearing a costume, going in for hair and makeup every single day and mentally prepping, everything moves much faster because you don't have hair makeup and you don't have a costume." "The rhythm of doing voice work or motion capture work is very exhausting," Ineson adds. "Because you're constantly on, on and on." Taking an exciting new step for Marvel The Fantastic Four have been a regular fixture in cinema, with Marvel's First Family being brought to life twice already in 2005 and 2015, respectively, for very different takes. These were made by 20th Century Fox when the studio owned the rights to the characters, and now it's time for Marvel to have a crack at it and make it feel different and new. If anyone could do it, though, it would be Matt Shakman, who helped catapult the studio's Disney+ era to greatness with the exceptional WandaVision — a bar the studio has struggled to reach ever since. The director had a difficult job on his hands to make the Fantastic Four work, but he tells Yahoo UK how he was given the creative freedom to make something truly his own. "I think what's great about Marvel is they're willing to take risks," the filmmaker says. "Everything from Guardians of the Galaxy to Thor: Ragnarok, to Black Panther to WandaVision. The chance that you can slip this idea of superhero movie but you can go in so many different directions, what makes the Fantastic Four so special is because it's a family. "They're the first family of Marvel, they saved Marvel in the '60s by doing this radical idea of making a comic book about a real family, and I think people have related to it for 60 plus years for that reason." And the movie needed the right cast to make it work, which they found in Pascal, Kirby, Quinn and Moss-Bachrach, he adds: "They're all such brilliant actors and they have such wonderful chemistry together. Each one of them brought humanity to their characters, which I think is the biggest part of it. "I think there needs to be grounded, real, authentic, emotional truth in everything that you do, and the bigger the canvas the more important that authenticity and that emotional grounding is needed. And all four of them are just great actors with incredible range." Facing backlash over female Silver Surfer Part of what has made this Fantastic Four different to what's come before is its take on the Silver Surfer, who has been gender-flipped, or more specifically, an existing female villain has been tapped to be the classic character instead of the expected Norrin Radd. Backlash was rampant when this change was revealed, and Garner shares how difficult it was to face that: "First of all, it's a lot of pressure because you want to respect the fans as well. We were talking about that earlier, but it's different because this is Shalla-Bal, so it's a different Silver Surfer. I was just very excited to play this character, and hopefully it resonates with people. I'm hoping for the best!" The other big bad, pun intended, is Galactus, and Ineson was the only possible candidate for Shakman, he admits: "He's got the greatest voice in movies. I was trying to figure out who should be a 14-billion-year-old space vampire who's 1000 feet tall, and it's Ralph. "We built a suit for him. We shot him practically, we filmed him in a way that you film miniatures with a lot of light and certain optics so that he feels huge, he feels like Mount Rushmore and that's how we approached it." Ineson wasn't surprised by this, as he jokingly adds that he's always been seen as perfect for villain roles rather than heroes: "They look at my face and hear my voice and they're not getting hero." Garner says it was the same with her: "Nobody ever asked me to play a hero, they're like 'ohh villain'. They look at me, they're like 'yeah, villain'. I don't think I've ever been cast as a hero." The challenge was making the world feel unique, but Shakman felt Marvel gave him a good starting point: "What's been so great about this is we've been just creating our own universe. "It's Earth-828, its own universe, they're the only superheroes in it, there's no other Marvel superheroes coming into it that you've seen before. And so it was special, it was our own corner of the MCU that we got to build and develop, and then where they go from here is exciting and you know the future is bright for them." Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in UK cinemas on Thursday, 24 July.

Pedro Pascal: ‘I Was So Appalled by the Way I Look' in ‘Wonder Woman 1984' That ‘I've Never Gone Back' to Being Clean Shaven for an Acting Role

Pedro Pascal faced off against his 'Fantastic Four' co-star Vanessa Kirby during LADbible's 'Agree to Disagree' video series, in which they were asked to debate which is sexier: Mustaches or beards? Pascal has long rocked facial hair throughout his career, but there was one role that required him to go clean shaven. That would be the villainous Maxwell Lord in 'Wonder Woman 1984,' Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot's superhero sequel that released in theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on Christmas Day 2020. 'I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean shaven me,' Pascal said. 'I was so appalled by the way I look in 'Wonder Woman 1984.' I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back. Unless it were completely necessary. If they asked me to be clean shave for 'Fantastic Four' and insisted then I would've done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie.' Pascal, who is no stranger to franchise fare thanks to 'The Last of Us' and 'The Mandalorian,' previously told Vanity Fair that it was hard to avoid fan complaints when he was cast and he constantly heard: 'He's too old. He's not right. He needs to shave.' 'I'm more aware of disgruntlement around my casting than anything I've ever done,' Pascal said. As for Maxwell Lord, the 'Wonder Woman 1984' role was a one and done stop for Pascal in the previous DC Universe. He's now playing a major role in the MCU and is already confirmed to be returning as Reed in next year's tentpole 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Marvel's 'Fantastic Four' opens in theaters July 25.
