Raspberry scented weirdness: will Elio be Pixar's wildest ride to date?
If you thought Inside Out, with its candy-coloured Freudian crisis management team, was pushing it, the studio's latest project may make you suspect Pixar has fully surrendered to the void, and is now making films for children who are made of sherbet and tie-dye, rather than flesh and bones.
Elio has been an ominously long time gestating. At least one director (Coco's Adrian Molina) has left, as has its original star (America Ferrera, who was once set to voice Elio's mother). The film was announced in 2022, and was originally scheduled for release in 2024 before being bumped owing to industry strikes and Disney's evolving release strategy. But such hiccups are not, it seems, terminal, for happily it is in the nature of Pixar projects that they can be workshopped again, re-rendered and emotionally fine-tuned in the digital ether long after the initial pitch.
At a screening of footage this week it became clear that Elio has every chance of joining Up, Wall-E and the Toy Story films at the zenith of the studio's work. It may be weirder than anything we've yet seen – at one point our hero makes friends with a tardigrade as reimagined by Takashi Murakami. But the whole thing looks to be conceived with such care, clarity and cosmic heart that we're reassured they haven't lost the plot – just decided to colour it in with raspberry-scented, jellybean-flavoured crayons from another dimension.
Elio's storyline centres on the titular 11-year-old orphan, newly adrift after the death of his parents and now living with his aunt (a kind but driven, overworked wannabe astronaut voiced by Zoe Saldaña). Lonely, friendless and emotionally marooned, he's developed a not-so-quiet conviction that somewhere out there, the universe is just waiting to deliver him into the kind of epic, star-straddling adventure that might finally make him feel seen.
It's not giving too much away to reveal that Elio's dream comes true – and he is soon delivered into the many welcoming limbs of the Communiverse, a sort of UN-style council of extreme cosmic decency that promptly honours him as Earth's esteemed leader. Unfortunately, he's arrived at the precise moment the intergalactic parliament is facing a terrible new threat that it appears pitifully ill-equipped to handle.
There's a definite hint of ET to Elio's wide-eyed longing for connection with something beyond the stratosphere. But where Spielberg never showed us the extraterrestrial's home planet – or even the inside of his ship – directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi are determined to shine a very bright light on the glowing, pulsating, neon-drenched heart of the galaxy. If you ever despaired at the constraints of 1970s and 80s sci-fi – films that, for technical and budgetary reasons, left a lot to the imagination – Elio looks as if it might just finally reward your faith, especially if your idea of outer space is an interstellar disco thrown by Ziggy Stardust inside a melted pack of Skittles.

'I was first on board world's biggest cruise ship and one thing was instantly obvious'
Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas is the world's biggest cruise ship alongside sister ship Icon of the Seas and we got a first look onboard The world's biggest and newest cruise ship set sail on her maiden passenger voyage - and I was lucky enough to be on board. Star of the Seas is a giant floating city with 20 decks crammed with top-notch attractions for the whole family, including a water park, swimming pools, crazy golf, theatres, an ice skating rink, 14 shops and 40 bars and restaurants. It is so big, it feels quite odd as it will take you a few days to find your way around this monster which set sail from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday night. But after dashing around the decks, here's a few highlights of the Royal Caribbean ship that you won't want to miss. Thrill Island is the largest waterpark at sea with SIX record-breaking water slides. The biggest is not for the faint-hearted but a must for the adventurous. One of its most daring features is Crown's Edge, part skywalk and part ride 154ft above the ocean. Adrenaline-seekers navigate a suspended walkway and experience a controlled freefall before gliding down a zipline to the deck below. It is meant to test the bravery of the thrill-seeker - and it certainly does that. After all, it's the sister ship to Icon of the Seas which is also a hit with adventurous holidaymakers. READ MORE: Inside huge shipyard building Disney cruise ships with cranes lifting 800-ton blocks There's no need to leave the ship if you fancy a bit of surfing, either. The Flow-rider is a wave machine which allows you to go "boogie boarding" and simulate real Surfing USA. Incredibly, 30,000 gallons of water a minute rush under the rider at 30mph creating a five-foot wave. Watch out for the height restrictions of 4ft 10in for stand-up surfing or 4ft 4in for boogie boarding. If you'd rather chill than thrill head to the adults-only area at the rear of the ship - or the aft as we rookie seafarers call it. There you can relax in the suspended infinity pool and enjoy vast ocean views with a cocktail in hand while grooving to the beat of an Ibiza-style DJ. There's also a shady bar nearby and a terrace with whirlpools. Don't worry about dashing to the bar for a refill. The efficient waiters will attend to your needs and keep your glasses well topped up. Chill Island is a three-deck area for holidaymakers to kick back at four pools, including the Royal Bay, the largest pool at sea. Guests can enjoy live bands while they sip on tropical cocktails from the swim-up bar called The Swim and Tonic. The bags of entertainment for the kids and sporty types, including a spectacular mini golf course and a sports court offering five-a-side football and basketball on the top deck. Don't worry about the ball going overboard, either, as it's entirely covered by netting. If you're travelling with a young family, head for Surfside. It's THE place to stay and play all day, however old the children are. Younger kids and toddlers will have great fun at Splashaway Bay and Baby Bay, while parents can relax nearby. There are plenty of lifeguards, constantly on full alert, so no reason to worry about their safety. There's a multi-level playground called Playscape, which includes a rock climbing wall, with safety harnesses provided. Just like Star of the Seas they can take cruising to another level.

Rachel Zegler and new boyfriend Nathan Louis-Fernand look smitten as they enjoy the sunshine in London
and her new boyfriend Nathan Louis-Fernand looked smitten as they roamed around Primrose Hill in London on Wednesday. The actress, 24, and her new backing dancer partner, 27, enjoyed a romantic dog walk with their pooch Lenny. The Snow White star cut a trendy figure in a red Adidas top and denim shorts, while her handsome hunk flexed his muscles in a sleeveless white vest top. The couple are believed to have met during Evita rehearsals, which began in April for Jamie Lloyd's adaptation of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Over the past year, Nathan has worked as a stripper on the Magic Mike Live show - a performance created by Channing Tatum based on the films he starred in by the same name. The 90-minute experience sees a cast of male dancers performing provocative routines, acrobatic acts and musical hits which 'celebrates female desires'. The dancer is very close with his parents and older brother, preferring yoga sessions over late-night partying and drinking. He bonded with Rachel over their shared love for musical theatre. The new couple have spent weekends away with one another, with the rest of the Evita cast, as Rachel, who plays the lead role Eva Peron, has grown very close to them. Last month, the Disney star shared a slew of pictures to her Instagram of a trip away to the countryside and she referred to Nathan as 'the darling man'. The Snow White star has been staying in London while she stars as Eva Peron in the West End musical. Her new romance comes eight months after rumours swirled she had split from her boyfriend of three years, Josh Andrés Rivera - though the pair never confirmed they had broken up. Rumours that the West Side Story co-stars had parted ways began to circulate in November 2024 after fans noticed Rachel had edited Josh out of photos on her Instagram feed. The couple began dating in 2021, after meeting on the West Side Story remake - for which she won the role of Maria in an open audition aged just 16. Rivera played the character of Chino. Then in February 2022, Rachel hard-launched their relationship on Instagram, but the post has since been deleted. The couple are believed to have met during Evita rehearsals, which began in April for Jamie Lloyd's adaptation of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Snow White star has been staying in London while she stars as Eva Peron in the West End musical Rachel put on an animated display on their walk The actors appeared to make their romance Instagram official on Valentine's Day that year when Rachel shared a black-and-white selfie photo of the couple on Instagram. 'Committing valen-crimes,' captioned the actress, who went on to post video that showed Rivera feeding her during a romantic dinner: 'Happy love day from me n mine.' And in 2023, Rachel wished Josh a happy birthday in May by gushing about him in the caption of a video that showed them staring into each other's eyes. 'You are everything I love about this world wrapped into one incredible man. Happy birthday, Joshua. In this life, I like just doing laundry and taxes with you.' After their West Side Story collaboration, the pair then featured together again on the Hunger Games prequel. Rachel took on the lead role of Lucy Gray Baird in the 2023 film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, with Josh playing Sejanus Plinth, mentor of the male tribute of District 2.
