Moses Itauma claims devastating first-round KO against Dillian Whyte

Former WBC interim heavyweight champion Whyte, 37, was not given any time to settle as Itauma – who had been made to wait in the ring by a delayed walk-in from his British rival – immediately went on the front foot.

Chatham southpaw Itauma tested Whyte with a flurry of early jabs before more precision shot combinations sent him back onto the ropes.
Another powerful right hook sent Whyte crashing to the floor and although he stumbled back onto his feet, the referee stepped in to wave off the contest with just over a minute left of the first round.
On the back of another hugely impressive display, the calls will continue to grow for Slovakia-born Itauma to be handed a world title shot in 2026.

Itauma was predicted to win in Riyadh but not as convincingly as he managed against a former world title contender. Even though the challenge in the ring only last 119 seconds, Itauma was tested during fight week. Whyte attempted to get under his skin during a prickly face-off and they also traded verbal blows at a press conference. But Itauma stayed cool, calm and collected on his first time headlining before letting his fists do the talking, just like in notable victories over Demsey McKean and Mariusz Wach. Can he handle Usyk? Itauma's triumph on Saturday certainly caught the eye of Tyson Fury, who immediately insisted the Briton would beat Oleksandr Usyk – and the name of undisputed world heavyweight champion Usyk continues to be linked with Itauma. Straight after Usyk demolished Daniel Dubois last month, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh called for the Ukrainian great to fight Itauma next. A recent 40-minute media session for Itauma with British press also saw him thrown a number of questions on Usyk. Itauma claimed that he would lose nothing from fighting Usyk now, but will Queensberry promoter Frank Warren put his young prospect in with a seasoned veteran after only 13 professional fights? Even if the answer is yes, Usyk has other contenders in the queue ahead of Itauma. 'I don't want to call out Usyk because I don't believe I deserve the opportunity – but guys that do deserve the opportunity, I want to fight those lot,' Itauma said. So, who next for Itauma? Itauma will wait with bated breath to discover Usyk's next move. Usyk has been ordered to fight WBO interim champion Joseph Parker next but has asked for an extension to negotiations. There is a very feasible scenario where Usyk vacates his WBO belt – and therefore loses undisputed status – to fight Fury or someone else, and opens the door for Itauma to get a world title shot in 2026. With Itauma the current number one with WBO, he would be first in line to profit if Usyk relinquishes that belt as a bout with Parker would be quickly arranged. Agit Kabayel, currently WBC interim champion, is a candidate for Itauma. There is also the prospect of another domestic affair, with Derek Chisora and Lawrence Okolie ringside in Riyadh, but after this latest devastating display, Itauma may have his sights set on bigger and better opponents on the grandest of stages.

Daniel Dubois makes major change just weeks after knockout defeat by Oleksandr Usyk
Daniel Dubois has embarked on a major career shake-up just weeks after his loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The Dynamite's bid to become the undisputed heavyweight champion ended in disappointment when he was stopped in the fifth round at Wembley last month. He has wasted no time in making changes behind the scenes, overhauling his backroom staff as he looks to rebuild momentum and reignite his career in the heavyweight division. Dubois has parted ways with trainer Don Charles and will now work with Anthony Joshua 's former coach Tony Sims. The decision comes shortly after Charles' assistant, Kieran Farrell, revealed he would also no longer be working with the former world champion, leaving Dubois with a completely new team around him. The 27-year-old had been under Charles' guidance for the past two years, following a stint with Shane McGuigan. Before that, he trained with Mark Tibbs. Charles was in Dubois' corner for the three biggest victories of his career, including wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua. Dubois claimed a world title after defeating Hrgovic, inheriting the IBF belt vacated by Oleksandr Usyk at the time. In the hours leading up to his fight with Usyk, Dubois' father hosted a party at the family home. As many as 70 guests attended, with footage circulating showing the star socialising with friends and family. Despite the criticism, Charles was quick to defend the gathering, telling talkSPORT:'It wasn't a party, it was a gathering. The same gathering was used as the prep on fight day for the AJ fight, the day he won. 'A lot was made of it with the energy he walked out at for the Anthony Joshua fight. That gathering was taken from home to the dressing room for that fight. 'That energy is what gave birth to that energy that he showed in the ring walk. Yes [we tried to replicate it], we were victorious. If it works for you the first time, you'd do it again. 'There might have been more people for this second gathering to get more energy, I'm a logical man and it makes logical sense. The AJ fight was big but this even trumps it, I try to understand and it may appear madness to people but it was the same thing that got us victory. 'I wasn't there and I chose not to go there. My duty is on the training team to make sure we go to the dressing room and make sure everything is intact.' Dubois is not expected to return to the ring this year as he plans his next move after suffering the second defeat of his professional career.

Aaron Pico speaks out after brutal spinning elbow loss to Lerone Murphy at UFC 319
Aaron Pico has released a statement after his UFC debut ended in defeat on Saturday, as Lerone Murphy knocked him out with a brutal spinning back elbow. UFC 319 saw Pico, 28, take his next career step after making his name in Bellator, but after showing promising signs in the early minutes, he was on the wrong end of a knockout of the year contender. In fact, Murphy's highlight-reel KO of the American was the second straight spinning back elbow knockout of the night, remarkably. In the previous fight, Carlos Prates beat Geoff Neal by the same means. Prates's strike came in the final second of the first round, dropped and badly hurt Neal, and was immediately touted as a contender for knockout of the year. Then, Murphy produced the same shot but put his opponent out cold, yet he added a hammer fist for good measure. The Briton, 34, might have established himself as the No 1 contender to featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in the process. Meanwhile, Pico must go back to the drawing board. 'Last night wasn't my night, that's the fight game,' Pico wrote on Instagram. 'I'm grateful for my team, my family, and everyone who continues to support me. Although Pico was making his UFC debut, he believed that a win over Murphy might have skyrocketed him up the rankings, potentially earning him a shot at Volkanovski. Now, however, attention turns to the potential of a Murphy vs Volkanovski fight, with the latter having reclaimed the featherweight belt in April. Volkanovski's decision win over Diego Lopes saw the Australian claim the vacant title, after Ilia Topuria relinquished it and moved up to lightweight, where he won a second belt. Volkanovski's previous fight was in fact a knockout loss to Topuria, as the latter won the title, which he then defended just once before giving it up. In the main event of UFC 319 on Saturday (16 August), Pico's teammate Khamzat Chimaev dominated Dricus Du Plessis to win the middleweight title, claiming a decision win.
