CRYPTOCURRENCY exchange Kraken is set to raise US$500 million in funding at a US$15 billion valuation, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
A spokesperson for Kraken declined to comment on the report.
Cryptocurrency-focused companies have been attracting increased investor interest as the digital asset class benefits from regulatory clarity and growing institutional adoption.
This trend has also prompted several crypto firms, including custody startup BitGo and asset manager Grayscale, to pursue US listings.
Kraken has been actively investing capital to expand into various asset classes and grow its user base.
In March, Kraken said it would acquire futures trading platform NinjaTrader in a US$1.5 billion deal. REUTERS

Hong Kong court freezes US$1.8 billion HSBC account linked to Wahaha heiress Kelly Zong

[HONG KONG] A Hong Kong court granted an order preventing Hangzhou Wahaha Group chairwoman Kelly Zong from withdrawing any of the US$1.8 billion held in an HSBC Holdings account, as part of a case filed by the heiress's half-siblings. The High Court also granted a disclosure order requiring Zong to provide detailed information about the HSBC account, according to the High Court judgement handed down on Friday (Aug 1). The 43-year-old head of the beverage company was sued by three plaintiffs identified as her half brothers and half sister. Jacky, Jessie and Jerry Zong are seeking more than US$2 billion in trust assets that they said their late father promised them before he died in February last year. The dispute among the half siblings could set a legal precedent for wealth succession in China and cast a shadow over the reputation of one of the country's most iconic beverage empires. The case has drawn attention and lit up social media in China since Bloomberg first reported on the proceedings in July. The three plaintiffs claim the beverage company's founder Zong Qinghou gave 'hand-written instructions' to one of his subordinates in January 2024 to set up three trusts each worth US$700 million, their lawyer said in court on July 11. Kelly's lawyer said the notes weren't directed to her, and she did not know where the funds for a US$300 million shortfall should come from. The Court has asked Kelly to provide detailed information about the HSBC account, including its latest balance, asset transfers or disposals since two February 2024, and a full account of asset movements. The Hong Kong case is to help proceedings in a Hangzhou court, which will decide the plaintiffs' rights to the trust assets and the funding source of the shortfall among other matters, according to lawyers from both sides. The Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court has organised two mediation sessions but Kelly did not attend either of them, the plaintiffs' lawyer said at the July hearing. BLOOMBERG

Germany to start deliveries of two Patriot systems to Ukraine

BERLIN - Germany said on Aug 1 that it will soon start delivering two more US-made Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine, as Kyiv faces a growing number of Russian drone and missile attacks. After reaching an agreement with the United States, the German military will deliver additional Patriot launchers in the coming days, and will supply further components in the next two to three months, the defence ministry said in a statement. In return, Germany has agreed with the US Defense Department that it will be the 'first country' to receive expedited delivery of new-generation Patriot systems. Berlin currently has nine Patriot systems, having delivered three to Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Two of Germany's systems are currently stationed in southeast Poland to protect Rzeszow airport, a transit point for weapons deliveries to Ukraine, with another being used to train Ukrainian soldiers. Germany has been Ukraine's second-largest supplier of aid after the United States. Patriots are made by the American aerospace and defence company Raytheon and are considered one of the most effective systems on the market for combatting missiles and drones. Top stories Swipe. Highlights: Trump unveils new tariffs, Malaysia hails 'win-win' offer as world looks to new deadline for deals

US trade partners around the world reacted on Friday (Aug 1) to President Donald Trump's executive order that would introduce new tariffs on many of them in seven days. Malaysia said that the US tariff reduction from 25 per cent to 19 per cent was a "significant achievement" as the deal was struck without compromising key national interests. Thailand and Cambodia, meanwhile, welcomed a reduced 19 per cent trade tariff. With many other economies facing steep levies, governments are looking to a new deadline of Aug 7 to make deals. Catch up on developments.
