Aizawl: In a fiery address on Monday, former chief minister and
Mizo National Front
(MNF) president
Zoramthanga
accused current CM Lalduhoma of secretly plotting to relocate the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl.
Drawing a parallel to the infamous medieval ruler Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Zoramthanga slammed the CM for allegedly making erratic decisions reminiscent of Tughlaq's controversial capital shift from Delhi to Daulatabad.
Speaking at the MNF headquarters in Aizawl, Zoramthanga referenced a letter from Seema Rani, a section officer at the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), which he claimed outlined plans for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on moving the state capital.
He accused Lalduhoma of misleading the public by only mentioning a "Peace City" initiative in Thenzawl to ease congestion in Aizawl.
Zoramthanga criticised the alleged plan for its lack of transparency, stating, "There has not been a single cabinet meeting or public consultation on this sensitive issue. People of
Mizoram
have been kept in the dark."
In response, the state urban development & poverty alleviation department clarified that there are no plans to shift the capital. They attributed the confusion to a miscommunication from the central govt. The MoHUA had approved Rs 10 crore for a DPR on establishing a Peace City in Thenzawl, not for relocating the capital, the department said.

Citing Malegaon blast case verdict, Yogi accuses opposition of ‘shielding terrorists'
1 2 Lucknow: Accusing opposition parties of "implicating innocent Hindus" while shielding actual terrorists in reference to the recent clean chit to the accused of the Malegaon Blast, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday alleged that Congress and Samajwadi Party repeatedly conspired against nationalists and were, in the Malegaon case, questioning the credibility of the country's constitutional institutions. "Will Congress ever apologise to the nation for its misdeeds?" the CM asked while addressing a public meeting in Meerut. He further said that the politics of Congress and SP was long centred on casteism, communal riots, and appeasement of mafia. Calling their approach to terrorism "soft", the CM demanded a public apology from Congress, stating that its politics rooted in casteism, riots, and mafia appeasement deeply harmed the nation. The CM was in Meerut to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects and participated in the bhoomi pujan of a Rs 2,517 crore Integrated Township project, spread across 295 hectares. The CM also provided financial assistance to young entrepreneurs, self-help groups, and housing scheme beneficiaries. Dedicating the township project to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the CM announced that its name would be 'Atal Shatabdi'. Located near the Rapid Rail corridor, this project aims to offer affordable and sustainable housing to residents of the National Capital Region. "The township will reshape Meerut's urban landscape with integrated residential, industrial, and commercial facilities, along with schools, technical institutes, and medical colleges. The project is expected to generate employment for lakhs and establish Meerut as a new hub of development," he said. Elaborating on the development in Meerut in recent years, the CM said that earlier known for its 'Chor Bazar' areas like Sotiganj, it was now gaining international recognition for its sports goods industry, thanks to initiatives like Rapid Rail, the 12-lane expressway, and the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. The country's first sports university, named after Major Dhyan Chand, is coming up in Meerut, he said, while the country's longest expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj will be completed by the end of the year, reducing travel time to Lucknow to just six hours. He also announced the commencement of survey work for the Meerut–Haridwar expressway and the integration of divisional offices under one roof as key developmental initiatives and announced new development projects as well, including the reconstruction of the Inner Ring Road and a new Circuit House. He urged people to purchase indigenous products over foreign goods to stop national wealth "from flowing into anti-national activities". The CM also announced that on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, women would be able to travel for free in state transport buses from Aug 8 to 10. He credited the govt's zero-tolerance policy for ridding Meerut of riots and crime and putting it on the path of development. "Eight years ago, Meerut was burning in the flames of communal violence. Today, it is surging ahead with infrastructure like the Rapid Rail and Expressways," he said. During the event, the Chief Minister distributed loans amounting to Rs 29 crore to 675 entrepreneurs under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyam Vikas Abhiyan. Financial assistance of Rs 64 crore was also extended to 881 self-help groups. Keys to homes were handed over to beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana, and farmers excelling in their field were honoured with citation certificates.

Traders At Chandni Chowk Protest Wall Of Indifference
New Delhi: A group of traders from Chandni Chowk organised a peaceful protest march on Monday, moving from Sunheri Masjid to Red Fort, expressing dissatisfaction over issues such as congestion, encroachments, poor law enforcement, inadequate maintenance, and unauthorised hawkers on the main road. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Despite efforts to secure redevelopment funding for this historical marketplace, the substantial investments proved ineffective due to oversight and poor maintenance by authorities, claimed traders. This situation persists despite multiple Supreme Court and Delhi High Court rulings aimed at restoring Chandni Chowk's former grandeur through systemtic improvements. The traders' association announced that they would continue their hour-long daily protests until Aug 14, criticising authorities and highlighting court orders. "Our objective is to combat corruption and establish proper public order. Delhi Police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are wishfully and wilfully not implementing several SC and HC's strict orders. The protests intend to 'name and shame' the administration for its failure to implement the rule of law in the area and for making a mockery of the court's directions," said Sanjay Bhargava, president of Chandni Chowk Vyapaar Mandal. Traders referenced various judicial orders, including the HC directive from Nov 7, 2023, instructing agencies to maintain the area's redevelopment and beautification works. They also highlighted the HC's direction from Dec 20, 2023, mandating strict compliance with the Special Task Force's Dec 7, 2023 decisions concerning street vendor management. The last HC order from Nov 22, 2024, required MCD and Delhi Police to address deficiencies and illegal activities within two weeks. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The judiciary asked for submission of a status report within a fortnight. But except for Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation, no other agency has submitted the status report so far. This is because they have done nothing," said Bhargava. "The 1.3 km-stretch developed after spending Rs 140 crore is poorly maintained. It lacks basic sanitation, so the question of deep cleaning of stone work done in the market area doesn't arise," added Deepak Jain, secretary of the traders' association. Traders pointed out the Supreme Court's 2007 ruling designated the area as a no hawking, no squatting zone and ordered the removal of illegal occupants. "MCD, which is responsible for sanitation, toilets, controlling loading and unloading in restricted hours, prevention of unauthorised construction on the main road, have totally ignored the directions of the courts. Similarly, Delhi Police and Delhi Traffic Police have ignored removing illegal hawkers or squatters," said Ajay Mittal, a trader and association member. In response, Delhi Police and MCD told TOI, action is being taken on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Praveen Shankar Kapoor, general secretary of the Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch and spokesperson of Delhi BJP, said while there are problems that need to be addressed, the traders will not hold protests during the Independence Day Week. "From Aug 9 to 15, we will not take part in any protests or sit-ins," he said.
