My Travels with Melissa Hamilton: 'Sunsets in Hawaii were the most incredible thing I've ever witnessed'
A principal with the Royal Ballet in London, she's getting ready to bring a very special show to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre this September.
A dancer who has performed all over the world, she's also co-founded Hamilton Christie Productions alongside her husband, Michael.
From Tokyo to Santorini, the Belfast native and self-confessed 'dreamer' shares the travel moments and memories she'll never forget.
Favourite childhood holiday memory
We usually had one summer holiday a year when we were kids growing up. One of my most poignant memories is from our visit to Orlando, specifically Walt Disney World in Florida. I was an absolute Disney fanatic.
I still love the fantastical and magical essence that Disney brings; that idea of following dreams and dreams being possible.
It's at the core of what Disney is. That was definitely one of my favourite memories as a kid.
Singapore.
Most memorable trip
One of the most memorable, meaningful and big journeys was to Singapore.
It was the first production of Hamilton Christie Productions at the Esplanade Theatre in March 2024.
To travel there with Michael and our company, to present our first show in such an amazing venue, that stands out for so many reasons.
I had visited Singapore once before and really fell in love with the culture and the people.
But this time, with everything it meant and represented for our work, it was something else.
Hawaii.
Most surprising destination
I always say the sunsets in Hawaii were the most incredible and magical things I've ever witnessed.
It was like watching a performance in the sky. The transformation of colour; it was like paintings being created in real time.
I'd never seen anything like it. The sheer beauty of nature can truly surprise and take your breath away.
Favourite city in the world
Hands down, Tokyo. Without question. I love how different it is. I feel like an absolute alien whenever I go to Tokyo, but in a good way.
The food, the culture, the people — the love and respect they have for ballet is incredible. I always have a great time there.
I first visited in 2008 with the Royal Ballet Company and have been lucky to return several times during my career.
There's a big ballet following there. I spent my 30th birthday in Tokyo performing in the World Ballet Festival. That was quite the birthday!
Most memorable food experience
There's a restaurant in London called Hakkasan (above) , which is modern Cantonese. We've had so many special moments marked there.
It's where Michael and I celebrated my promotion to principal with the Royal Ballet Company. We've always been in awe of what they do.
The standard of food is incredibly high and consistent. It's one of those places that just never disappoints. It's become our go-to for any milestone or celebration.
Melissa Hamilton and husband at the Grace in Santorini
Favourite hotel
The Grace Hotel in Santorini. The views over the sea and the caldera, the contrast with the whitewashed walls of the hotel and the island — it was absolutely breath-taking.
It was peaceful, but humbling at the same time. Michael and I just lay there, looking out over the water. From that view, the calmness was unforgettable.
Favourite thing to do while travelling
I always say I love travel because it allows me to recalibrate. It gives me a moment to switch off and reconnect to myself.
I actually get upset now that there's wifi on planes! I used to love being forced to shut down and disconnect from the fast-paced rhythm of my life.
Travel gives me that pause. I also love the energy you get from being somewhere new. It's like a system reset. A reboot. That's what it gives me.
Dubai.
My bucket list trip
I've had opportunities to perform in Dubai before because there's a growing ballet audience in Dubai, but I've not made it yet.
My husband is very passionate about interior design and architecture; he's a co-founder and director of 1.61 London, so his interest in the city's design has definitely piqued my interest in it as well.
And just the sheer scale and level of luxury… I'd love to witness that. It feels like it would be a completely different experience from anywhere else.
Melissa Hamilton will bring her spectacular show, Melissa Hamilton's Ballet Stars Gala, to Dublin in 2025. This star-studded ballet show, created exclusively for Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, will run from September 17-18. Tickets from €36.50 are on sale now through Ticketmaster.

Lamine Yamal mural in Barcelona vandalised with the Seven Dwarfs after controversial 18th birthday party
The original public street art was unveiled last month to celebrate the Barcelona and Spain forward as he turned 18. Yamal, however, received criticism over his private party arrangements after images emerged of dwarves and scantily clad women reportedly paid to attend the event. Yamal faced accusations of exploitation, which he has not publicly responded to, and over the weekend vandals stencilled images of the Disney film version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on a wall in Barcelona's Plaza Joanic. The dwarfs had been painted around an image of Yamal in his superman outfit. Shortly after the stunt came to light on Monday, footage showed an artist taking immediate action to restore the painting to its original state. Yamal had reportedly hired dwarfs as part of the entertainment in his private birthday party outside of the city, according to Spanish reports. The Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE) claimed those reportedly hired to attend the party were there 'solely for entertainment and promotional activities'. ADEE said it would take legal action against Yamal, arguing it could violate Spanish law intended to protect the dignity of disabled people. It claimed that his alleged actions violated the 'fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful'. The original artwork was created by urban artist TV Boy and was unveiled ahead of the Spain international's 18th birthday on July 13. On the field, Yamal, on tour with Barca in South Korea, has continued to dazzle in pre-season after emerging as world football's hottest teenage property. Barcelona president Joan Laporta talked up Yamal's 'genius' talents in a wide-ranging interview this week, but warned against comparing the teenager to eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi. 'Lamine Yamal is Lamine Yamal, Leo Messi was Leo Messi,' Laporta told CNN. 'Leo Messi has been the best player in the world, and Lamine, I think that in his position nowadays, is the best player in the world.' Laporta added that he was working with Yamal's family and agent to ensure the youngster enjoys the best career possible. Barcelona, meanwhile, were learning from their experience with Messi to provide the best environment possible for the player to flourish.

10 easy-to-watch series you can binge this Bank Holiday
While many people are ready to dive into a mammoth binge session when a Bank Holiday rolls around, others prefer some easy viewing. From rewatching come classic sitcoms to exploring some new series that should be on your watchlist, you truly have an abundance of options to beat the Sunday scaries and relax in style. Here's 10 series we here at think you should be watching this Bank Holiday Weekend. This multi-award winning comedy is always high up our list for a rewatch, and with episodes not being too long, you can easliy rewatch the whole series in less than a week. For those who have never seen it, the series stars father and son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy as the wealthy Rose family who lose all their money and are forced to go live in the town of Schitt's Creek. Ahead of the second season arriving on August 6, what better time to either watch or rewatch season one of Wednesday? The young Addams is changing school and will be attending Nevermore Academy for the semester. While she tries to not live in her parents' acedemic shadows, she uncovers a murder mystery that only she can solve. Based on the film of the same name, this Tina Fey-co-created series has eight 30-minute episodes, meaning you can knock out the first season in on night. The series follows six friends who meet up every season and how their lives change over the course of a year. The show has already been renewed for a second season and we couldn't recommend it more. A series that had viewers gripped from the first episode was the Disney+ series Paradise starring Sterling K Brown and James Marsden. It's a show that is hard to describe without spoiling the mega plot-twist in the conclusion of the first episode, but we'll just say it stars a Secret Service agent who is in charge of protecting the President of the United States and… well… things go wrong. Another show that has a new season incoming is the massively popular Only Murders in the Building which has taken the true crime podcast trope and made a fictional series out of it. Starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, with some megastar cameos and supporting cast each season, there are four seasons for fans to feed their murder mystery appetites now streaming, and season five lands September 9. While it's been 15 years since the show ended, Scrubs is still a popular series for a rewatch. And, considering it's getting a reboot with many of the main cast returning, what better time to pop it back on the telly? Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag was the show everyone was going crazy for when it was airing, and even though it's only two seasons with a total of 12 episodes, it's a must-see show. The show is adapted from Waller-Bridge's 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe one-woman play of the same name (which won a Fringe First Award) and introduced the world to Andrew Scott's Hot Priest. Based on the book series by Lee Childs, Reacher stars Alan Ritchson as the titular character who always seems to find himself getting into trouble and needing to help solve a mystery or two. The series has three seasons now streaming, and the fourth is currently in production. A show that might have gone under the radar is The Big Door Prize which stars our very own Chris O'Dowd and follows the residents of a small town which is changed when a mysterious machine appears that promises to reveal everyone's true potential. Similar to many of the shows on this list, it's only 30-minutes an episode and has two seasons now streaming, but alas, that's your lot. This entry might be the most difficult to get a hold of in the Rep of Ireland without a VPN, but the UK version of Ghosts is definitely worth the effort and has five seasons to watch. The show follows a group of ghosts from different historical periods haunting a country house while sharing it with its new living occupants, and stars a slew of familiar faces from the British comedy scene such as Taskmaster alumni Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Mathew Baynton, and Lolly Adefope.
