Air India crash: Preliminary report expected today, early findings point to fuel control error & engine power loss; details inside

Time of India11-07-2025
It has been a month since the Air India 171 Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed just 30 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on June 12. The London-bound flight ended in tragedy, claiming the lives of 260 people, with only one survivor. Since then, families and officials alike have awaited answers about what went wrong.
The preliminary investigation report is expected to be released today, marking an important step in understanding the cause of the fatal crash.
Timeline and what happened
According to officials, the aircraft took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at around 1:38 PM. Moments after departure, the pilot issued a 'Mayday' call, and the plane crashed into the rooftop of a medical college hostel, followed by an explosion.
Key flight data, including the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder—commonly referred to as black boxes—were recovered from the crash site. Both were found intact and are now being analyzed by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing.
The Investigation report yet to be made public on Friday about the cause of Air India crash is focusing on the movement of the engine fuel control switches. What investigators are looking into
Initial speculation pointed to engine failure. However, recent updates indicate that the focus has shifted to the cockpit's fuel control switches and engine thrust management. These switches, placed at the center console, are used to activate and deactivate the plane's GE Aerospace engines.
A Bloomberg report noted that investigators have not found any design or mechanical issues with the aircraft or its engines. But questions remain about how both engines could fail simultaneously—a scenario experts consider highly unlikely.
Aviation analyst Bjorn Fehrm, a former fighter pilot, commented on a video of the crash, noting, 'Everything is normal until they don't put in the (landing) gear, and very shortly after the aircraft is losing thrust.' Fehrm added, 'But as to scenarios where both engines power down simultaneously? That's improbable like hell.'
Fuel switches under scrutiny
The latest line of inquiry involves whether the fuel control switches were deliberately or accidentally moved. Aviation safety expert John Cox told Reuters that it is very unlikely a pilot would accidentally hit those switches. 'You can't bump them and they move,' he said.
However, he also described a possible scenario: if one engine failed and the pilot attempted to switch it off but mistakenly shut off the functioning engine instead, it could result in both engines shutting down within seconds.
Report may offer first clarity
The preliminary findings are expected to bring some initial clarity into the causes of the crash that killed 241 passengers and nearly two dozen crew members. While the full investigation may take months, today's report will serve as the first official indication of what might have led to the disaster. As the first findings emerge, investigators may finally uncover what triggered the deadly crash just seconds after takeoff.

Mirchi Hotel Chowk to be named Kothule-Patil Chowk

Nashik: Mirchi Hotel Chowk on Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar state highway in the city is set to be renamed as Kothule-Patil Chowk, following approval from NMC's general body. The decision comes approximately two and a half years after a fatal accident on Oct 8, 2022, which claimed 13 lives. A Mumbai-bound private tourist bus had collided with a truck at the intersection near the chowk. The bus caught fire, leading to the deaths. Nashik MP Rajabhau Waje had requested NMC to rename the chowk. Accordingly, NMC's public works department tabled the proposal at the general body meeting on Tuesday. Civic chief Manisha Khatri approved the proposal. Waje said the farmland in and around the chowk was owned by the Kothule-Patil families. Hence, there was a name-change demand from local residents. After the incident at the Mirchi Hotel Chowk in Oct 2022, NMC conducted a special drive for removing encroachment along the chowk on the state highway. Thereafter, the NMC administration also conducted a survey across the city and found around 22 black spots of accidents across the city. NMC also conducted the survey and suggested measures to prevent accidents at the black spots.

Arrested from India-bound plane before take off: American couple jailed in Singapore for stealing Louis Vuitton, Dior products at airport

The American couple already boarded the Mumbai-bound plane from Changi Airport after stealing but were arrested before the plane could take off. American nationals Kapadia Husain Zoher, 35, and Kapadia Amatullah, 30, were arrested at Changi Airport for stealing Louis Vuitton and Dior products amounting to more than $750 when they were in transit. The dentist husband and the engineer wife were caught before their Mumbai-bound plane was about to take off, and they had already boarded the plane. Both of them are American nationals but probably of Indian-origin. As they were waiting for their connecting flight to India on June 23, they visited two stores and stole the luxury products. While the husband was stealing, the wife kept a lookout. On August 4, Kapadia Husain Zoher, the husband, was sentenced to 18 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a theft charge. The wife, who also pleaded guilty to a similar charge, was sentenced to a week in jail. At around 5pm on June 23, Kapadia Husain Zoher entered a Louis Vuitton store at the airport's Terminal 1, said State Prosecuting Officer (SPO) Ng Chee Wee. CCTV cameras inside the store caught him committing the offence, the court heard. The couple then went to Cosmetics & Perfumes by The Shilla at the airport's Terminal 3 shortly before 5.40pm that day. Kapadia Husain Zoher then took a bottle of Dior Sauvage perfume worth around $160 and slipped it into his pocket, while his wife acted as a lookout. They left the scene soon after without paying for it, Straits Times reported. '(Kapadia Husain Zoher) had stolen the case holder out of greed. He had a habit of overspending, and he did not want to pay for the case holder," SPO Ng said. Both stolen items were recovered and returned to the respective stores. Singapore has strict laws against theft, with offenders facing swift investigation and prosecution, especially in transit zones like Changi Airport.
