Mirchi Hotel Chowk to be named Kothule-Patil Chowk
The decision comes approximately two and a half years after a fatal accident on Oct 8, 2022, which claimed 13 lives.
A Mumbai-bound private tourist bus had collided with a truck at the intersection near the chowk.
The bus caught fire, leading to the deaths.
Nashik MP Rajabhau Waje had requested NMC to rename the chowk. Accordingly, NMC's public works department tabled the proposal at the general body meeting on Tuesday. Civic chief Manisha Khatri approved the proposal.
Waje said the farmland in and around the chowk was owned by the Kothule-Patil families.
Hence, there was a name-change demand from local residents.
After the incident at the Mirchi Hotel Chowk in Oct 2022, NMC conducted a special drive for removing encroachment along the chowk on the state highway. Thereafter, the NMC administration also conducted a survey across the city and found around 22 black spots of accidents across the city. NMC also conducted the survey and suggested measures to prevent accidents at the black spots.

NMC blames vandalism for dirty, battered public loos
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Wednesday candidly admitted that the condition of many public toilets in the city has deteriorated, not only due to poor upkeep but also because of rampant theft and vandalism — including breaking — of toilet seats by users. The startling disclosure came during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) on the state of civic sanitation filed by lawyer Sundeep Badana in the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court. A division bench of justices Anil Kilor and Vrushali Joshi has directed the state's urban development department and the Swachh Maharashtra Mission Directorate to file their replies within three weeks. The matter will be taken up again after all affidavits are on record. The PIL alleges that public toilets in Nagpur are in deplorable condition, insufficient in number, and poorly maintained by contractors tasked with their upkeep, with the municipal body showing little oversight. The petition argues that the lack of functional facilities is forcing citizens into open defecation, undermining the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Maharashtra campaigns. In its detailed affidavit, NMC said that several unscrupulous individuals have stolen toilet seats from paid public conveniences, while in places where they could not be removed, they were deliberately broken. "Citizens lack civic sense, leading to repeated damage of facilities," the corporation stated, adding that repair and replacement costs last year alone amounted to nearly Rs1 crore. Nagpur currently has 62 paid toilet complexes housing 490 toilet seats — 312 for men and 178 for women — along with 101 bathing cubicles and 318 urinals. The maintenance contracts for these facilities are distributed among four agencies, which are expected to carry out minor repairs. However, the NMC said the extent of vandalism often forces it to step in directly. The civic body also informed the court that it plans to launch 37 new public toilets and has developed a mobile app to monitor their maintenance. It argued that the petitioner had failed to produce any proof showing that the paid toilets were not functioning, and urged the court to dismiss the PIL as baseless.
