Forget the iPhone 17 Air — iPhone Fold just tipped to be thinnest iPhone ever
While Ming-Chi Kuo once predicted that the iPhone Fold could be as thin as 4.5mm when unfolded, Instant Digital claims the frame is actually 4.8mm — not including any extra thickness from the internal screen's "frame padding."
Even if this means the iPhone Fold inches closer to 5mm in thickness when open, it's still considerably thinner than the iPhone 17 Air's rumored 5.65mm.
Of course we've just seen Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 land with a thickness of just 4.2mm when unfolded. While not the thinnest foldable ever made, it's still pretty darn close.
In fact, considering it's only slightly thicker than a USB-C port, there's only so much more Samsung should shave off the device.
Still, Samsung has had 7 generations to thin down its foldable phones, whereas Apple has yet to release a single one. Assuming Instant Digital is correct about the size, this could be a compelling first foldable phone for Apple.
We've been hearing a bunch of things about the iPhone Fold recently, which makes the prospect of the foldable arriving next year seem even more likely.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
The most notable of which is that the phone could come in under $2,000 — making it cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Analysts predict that the phone could cost somewhere between $1,800 and $2,000. While we can't say how accurate those predictions actually are at this early stage, it gives us hope that the phone may not be quite as expensive as intially feared.
To top it all off, there have been reports that Apple has partnered with Samsung to offer a crease-free foldable display. Ming Chi-Kuo claims that not having that display crease will help the phone stand out from other, more established foldables.
Plus, if Apple wants to succeed in China, where foldables are a lot more common, then it's going to have to do something special.
We've got a ways to go until we find out for sure, but in the meantime you can keep up with the growing number of leaks and rumors in our iPhone Fold hub.

Here's What You Should Know About the Last Major iOS 18 Update Before iOS 26
Before Apple releases iOS 26 this fall, the company will probably release iOS 18.6 in the next few weeks. The company released the iOS 18.6 release candidate on July 21, but it didn't change much on the iPhones of developers and beta testers. While iOS 26 will bring a major redesign to iPhones, the latest beta is filled with bug and security fixes, so developers and beta testers shouldn't expect new features. Apple/Screenshot by CNET Since this is a beta, I recommend downloading it on something other than your primary device. Because this isn't the final version of iOS 18.6, the update might be buggy, and battery life may be affected, so it's best to keep those troubles off your primary device. Note that the beta is not the final version of iOS 18.6, so more features could land on your iPhone when it is released. Apple will likely release iOS 18.6 to the general public in the next few weeks but an exact release date is unclear. However, iOS 18.6 will likely be the last significant iOS 18 update the company releases before it makes iOS 26 available this fall. Here's what to expect from iOS 18.6 when it lands on your iPhone. The release candidate is usually the last beta version of an iOS update before Apple releases the update to the general public. That means Apple could make iOS 18.6 available to the public in the next week. This beta is all about security patches and squashing bugs If you're a developer or beta tester, don't expect much from this beta other than bug and security fixes. After downloading and looking into the iOS 18.6 release candidate, I found no new features or noticeable changes. And that's not surprising considering Apple's iOS release schedule over the years. Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 and released iOS 17.6 more than a month later in July. That update was filled with more than 30 important bug fixes and security patches but no new features. Apple recommended that everyone download the update at the time and it was the last major iOS 17 update before the release of iOS 18. Apple did the same thing in July 2023 when it released iOS 16.6. When the tech giant released that update, it was focused on bug fixes and security patches; the next major iOS release was iOS 17. Apple is likely shifting gears and focusing more on iOS 26. In fact, the company has already released three developer betas of that iOS software in preparation for its fall release. There could be more betas before iOS 18.6 is released to the public, so there's plenty of time for Apple to add features or change others -- but I wouldn't count on new features. Apple has not announced when it will release iOS 18.6, but since Apple released the iOS 18.6 release candidate, I expect the company to release the update in about a week. iOS 26 Public Beta Release Date: Exactly When Apple's iPhone Software Will Go Live
Updated July 21 with further details of exactly when the new iPhone software will reach public beta. Apple announced the next big iPhone software back in June, set to go on general release this fall. It's called iOS 26 and its new design has made it highly anticipated. If you're keen to try iOS 26, it's about to become available in the first public beta – and more information has now come to light. Here's what's happening. Apple iOS 26 coming soon Apple announced in June that the release of iOS 26 would first appear as developer betas as usual, with the first public beta set for July. When it reaches general release it will be on the 2025 releases, iPhone 17 series, as well the iPhone 16 sereis and some earlier models. That's the normal schedule, though the public beta routinely arrives around the middle of the month — so the week beginning Monday, July 14 seemed most likely. That's come and gone, of course, but it looks like this week could be the one we're waiting for. In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman addressed the question. He had already posted on X that the public beta would land around Wednesday, July 23. Now, he has expanded on this reasoning. 'All indications are that iOS 26 should go into the public beta phase this coming week. This typically happens by the middle of July, so the software is a bit later than usual. Given that iOS 26 is such a significant design overhaul, it makes sense that Apple would want to take a little extra time to get things right,' Gurman said. And there's another reason things seem to be running a little late, which is that instead of using the third developer beta as the basis for the public beta, which is the usual one, 'It seems likely that this public beta will match up with the fourth developer beta version,' this time, Gurman goes on. This means that although it's a little later, it'll be based on a more stable release, assuming Apple is improving its beta software with each release. Since this is for public use, better software will be welcome. There have been tweaks to the Liquid Glass design which is the marquee feature in iOS 26, so maybe developer beta 4/public beta 1, will have something closer to the final look. iOS 26 Public Beta Release Date This week looks most likely: Apple said July and after this week, there are only three days in July left. I believe it will be released the day after the fourth developer beta, so if that lands on Monday, July 21, the public beta will be Tuesday, July 22. Gurman's proposed date of July 23 is also possible, but keep an eye out for dev beta news on Monday. I'll be updating the news, so please check back. Updating this post on Monday, July 21, I can see there's greater clarity of what's happening. I know, it's unusual to make a prediction based on something that hasn't happened, but there's been no fourth developer beta yet. I don't believe it will come today, which makes me think that Tuesday will see the release of the fourth developer beta, which forms the basis for the first public beta. It's theoretically possible that the public beta could land on the same day as the latest developer beta, but I don't buy it. Much more likely is that the public beta will follow the next day, Wednesday, 23 July, exactly as Gurman predicted, or just possibly on Thursday, 24 July, depending on whether there are any last-minute hiccups. Remember, this developer beta cycle began with an unprecedented re-release of the first beta, just days after the initial release. What About The General Release? The expectation of a September release remains in place. 'Does that mean the final software will ultimately ship later than expected,' Gurman asks, adding, 'Probably not, since the developer versions remain on track.'
