EU relaxes Schengen Visa rules for some citizens from July 2025: Report
EU Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Hans Ossowski announced the changes on Friday, describing them as a step towards resolving issues that have frustrated Turkish travellers for years, Reuters reported.
The European Commission's decision simplifies the process for obtaining multiple-entry visas to the 27-country bloc.
Under the new system, Turkish citizens who have previously used visas correctly can obtain a six-month visa from their second application.
This can then be extended to one-year, three-year and five-year multiple-entry visas in subsequent applications.
'It will be much easier and much faster for Turkish citizens,' Ossowski told reporters in Ankara.
The ambassador acknowledged the changes would help address Turkish complaints about lengthy bureaucratic processes but warned the measures would not permanently solve all problems.
For years, Turkish citizens have faced delays in the EU's visa system, which operates through accredited visa agencies that have struggled with high application volumes.
Turkey welcomes Schengen Visa reforms
Turkey's foreign ministry welcomed the move and confirmed that Turkish institutions and the EU Commission would continue seeking further visa relaxation measures.
Trade Minister Omer Bolat described the decision as a 'facilitation that our citizens have been awaiting for a long time.'
Speaking to the state-owned Anadolu news agency, Bolat also said Turkey wanted to begin talks on modernising its customs union with the EU and expanding the accord to include service and e-commerce sectors.
The visa changes come amid signs of renewed engagement between Turkey and the EU after years of strained relations.
Turkey has held EU membership candidate status since 1999, but its accession process has been frozen over concerns including human rights and democratic backsliding. Recent months have seen increased economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
Ossowski emphasised that the EU has offered Turkey visa-free travel prospects for more than a decade and called for urgent revival of the liberalisation process.
'Every other candidate country has visa-free travel except Turkey,' he said. 'It is urgent to re-engage in this process of visa-free travel in the Schengen space and the EU.'
The European Commission plans to restart formal negotiations after the summer break and will work with Ankara on fulfilling six remaining benchmarks required by the visa liberalisation roadmap, according to Ossowski.
'We are ready, the Commission is ready to work closely with Turkish authorities,' he said.
The EU and Turkey have been discussing possible workarounds to address the slow processing times that have affected Turkish visa applications due to high demand.

EU car industry sees relief - and pain - in US trade deal
German auto companies in particular were in for a great deal of export pain, as their share prices indicated. Shares in Porsche, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz all lost more than three percent in trading Monday. The agreement eases "the intense uncertainty surrounding transatlantic trade relations in recent months", Europe's main auto group, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), said in a statement welcoming the deal "in principle". But it noted that the 15 percent US tariffs imposed on EU goods including cars "will continue to have a negative impact not just for industry in the EU but also in the US". German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said his country's economy -- the biggest in Europe -- would face "substantial damage" from the US tariffs agreed in the deal. But, he said, "we couldn't expect to achieve any more". The United States is a key market for European automakers, which last year sent nearly 750,000 of its cars to it, representing nearly a quarter of the sector's overall exports. While the 15 percent rate is less than the 27.5 percent tariff US President Donald Trump imposed in April, it is far higher than the 2.5 percent levy European car manufacturers faced before Trump's return to the White House. A German analyst, Stefan Bratzel, said it could be expected that US consumers would pay two-thirds of the price hike caused by the tariff, while car exporters would probably swallow the other third. For those companies, "we might have to see whether it is possible for cost-cutting somewhere else," he said. The 15 percent rate was similar to one reached in the deal the United States struck with Japan, another major car-exporting country. Will cost industry 'billions' For German carmakers, the United States represents around 13 percent of their exports. In the short term, a 15 percent tariff will cost them "billions each year", said Hildegard Mueller, head of the national automobile manufacturers' association VDA. The situation has forced all the automakers to lower their 2025 profit forecasts and to look for ways to alleviate the pressure. BMW boss Oliver Zipse suggested in June that Europe could get rid of its own tariffs on imported vehicles made in the United States. That could benefit his company, which last year exported 153,000 vehicles from the Americas, and imported into Europe 92,000 cars that were assembled in the United States. Similarly, Mercedes is looking for help from the national or EU level. "The deal reached between the EU and the US is a first, important step that needs to be followed by other measures," a company spokeswoman told AFP. "Politicians need to keep working to get rid of obstacles getting in the way of free trade. We are counting on the EU and US to continue their constructive dialogue in the future," she said. Volkswagen is also facing tariff hardship for vehicles it makes in Mexico for the US market, announcing that its first-quarter results had been shaved by around 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion) from a year earlier. Its Porsche and Audi cars are also exposed as they have no production factories in the United States. On Monday, Audi cut its revenue and profit targets for this year, though it said it expects them to rise next year. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has suggested reaching a side deal with the United States that would take into account investments his company could make in that country. Volvo Cars, the Swedish carmaker owned by China's Geely Holding, has announced steep second-quarter losses because of tariffs. The European auto sector is now lobbying the European Commission to delay the timetable for making the European car market go all-electric, and to provide some sort of industry stimulus. With no help, European car factories, already facing uphill challenges, "will have to reduce production," said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research. That, he said, could affect up to 70,000 jobs in Germany alone.

International Trade Centre (ITC) SheTrades and Visa expand partnership to support women and youth entrepreneurs in sub-Saharan Africa
The International Trade Centre's (ITC) SheTrades initiative and Visa announce a regional capacity building programme to support women and youth-led businesses in Kenya and South Africa, expanding their partnership into sub-Saharan Africa. Building on collaborations in the Gulf and Asia-Pacific regions, the programme will enhance the digital, financial and entrepreneurial capacities of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) led by women and youth – two key groups driving innovation and inclusive growth across the continent. Entrepreneurs can register to join the programme here. Across sub-Saharan Africa, women are estimated to own close to 60% of MSMEs, while earning 38% less in profits. Structural barriers – such as limited access to finance, digital technologies and tailored business support – continue to impede their full participation in formal economies. Similarly, while the region's young demographic can be considered a strength, young entrepreneurs encounter challenges in accessing the skills, tools and networks required to build and scale their enterprises. According to the African Development Bank, narrowing gender and age-based disparities in labour markets and enterprises could boost economic output by as much as 34%, underscoring the potential positive impact of inclusive economic participation. To address these barriers, the programme offers a hybrid learning experience combining online and in-person capacity building tailored to the needs of women and youth-led MSMEs in the region, including on topics such as artificial intelligence for business, financial literacy, digital payments, investment readiness and broader entrepreneurial skills. At the core of the programme is Visa's She's Next, which provides women entrepreneurs with mentorship, funding and networking. By connecting programme participants with the She's Next alumni and the wider SheTrades community, the initiative will foster peer learning, sustained engagement and a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem. 'This partnership reflects our shared commitment to closing the digital and financial inclusion gap for African entrepreneurs,' said ITC Executive Director Pamela Coke-Hamilton. 'We look forward to building on our partnership with Visa to enable long-term economic empowerment of women and youth, who, when fully engaged in trade, become powerful agents of change in their communities and countries.' The programme will be delivered in collaboration with a network of public and private partners, including the SheTrades Hubs in Kenya and South Africa, hosted by ABSA Bank Kenya and the Small Enterprise and Finance Development Agency (SEDFA), respectively. Microsoft Philanthropies will contribute AI-focused learning modules, which will be made available as UN public goods through the SheTrades Academy. 'At Visa, we believe that economies that include everyone, everywhere, uplift everyone, everywhere. Our expanded partnership with ITC SheTrades through the She's Next initiative is a testament to this belief,' said Michael Berner, Head of Visa Southern and Eastern Africa. 'By equipping women and youth entrepreneurs with the digital tools, financial knowledge, and networks they need to succeed, we are helping individual businesses thrive and contributing to the broader economic resilience and inclusive growth of the region. This initiative reflects Visa's ongoing commitment to driving equitable access to the digital economy and unlocking opportunities for underrepresented communities across Sub-Saharan Africa.' The programme was announced during the Global SME Ministerial Meeting, organised by ITC in collaboration with South Africa's Department of Small Business Development, where Visa contributed to discussions on financing solutions for sustainable small business growth. Upcoming webinars include: Kick-off&Microsoft AI Launch: 31 July Digital Tools&AI Integration: 28 August Budgeting&Financial Planning: 18 September Entrepreneurs can register to join the programme here.
