Celtic 4 Falkirk 1: Instant reaction to the burning issues

A brilliant strike by Keelan Adams gave the large Falkirk travelling support something to cheer, but it was scant consolation on a night when their team was largely outclassed.
Here are the talking points from Celtic Park…
Maeda up for the cup again and back on the goal trail
It is fair to say that the perpetually-in-motion winger hasn't quite hit the brilliant heights of last season so far in this, but there were signs here that he is starting to crank back into top gear, as he bagged his first goal of the campaign.
And the cup specialist was always likely to get a goal in this one. He has now scored in eight of the last nine domestic cup games that Celtic have played, racking up 14 goals along the way.
It was a well worked move by Celtic too, who had been chapping on the door from the off. Callum McGregor's dink to the back post was met by Kieran Tierney, who bagged another assist by guiding the ball expertly across the six-yarder for Maeda to nod past former teammate Scott Bain.
When Tierney returned to the club in the summer, he stated that one of the things he was looking forward to most was building up a formidable partnership down the Celtic left with 'machine' Maeda.
Barring a comical fresh air kick from Tierney that drew laughter from his own fans once they were sure he hadn't done himself an injury, the pair are already looking to be finding an ominous understanding.
Rodgers rings the changes, did Engels stake a claim?
With Champions League qualifiers on the horizon and the small matter of a shlep to the vicinity of the Chinese border to contend with in the not-too-distant future, Celtic manager Rodgers understandably looked to rotate and get some game time into the legs of those who have been on the outside looking in so far this season.
He made six changes in all to the side who won at Pittodrie on Sunday, but perhaps the most intriguing of those was the inclusion of Arne Engels, with the £11m man seeing his place in the starting XI seized by summer arrival Benjamin Nygren, a mere snip at around a tenth of the price.
And he showed flashes of his undoubted class. There was a brilliant free kick that clattered off the inside of the far post, with the Belgian desperately unlucky to see it bounce out to safety. He should have definitely scored when he failed to anticipate that a delightful Johnston clipped cross would reach him, with the ball instead bouncing off his face and clear from about a yard.
Overall, did he make it impossible for Rodgers to leave him out when the bigger occasions roll around? While showing up well, he probably didn't quite do enough, which has rather been the story of his Celtic career to date.
Murray minted and on the scoresheet
What better way for the 22-year-old to celebrate his bumper new contract extension, keeping him at Celtic until the summer of 2028, than with a goal? And he got it as he glanced home a corner, showing his strength and aerial ability to get on the end of a wicked Engels delivery.
It was his work at the other end that was of most interest though, and he did that competently enough despite the sporadic counter punches that Falkirk were managing to land on Viljami Sinisalo's goal.
The most striking aspect of Murray these days is just how much he has developed physically since those early days of his Celtic career, when Ange Postecoglou was forced to throw the youngster in at the deep end for his debut in a Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland four years ago now.
Rodgers said before this game that he expects to see big things from the centre-back in the next year to 18 months, and it will be interesting to see if he can force his way up the pecking order at the heart of the Celtic defence.
Bigger fish for Falkirk to fry, but they must tighten up defence
In a similar vein as to when they came here on cup duty last season, Falkirk left on the end of a hefty defeat, but also with plenty of credit for the way they approached the task at hand.
Manager John McGlynn will be disappointed with the manner of the goals his team conceded of course, but there was plenty of adventure in their play, and had they been more clinical on the break in the first half then it might have been a different story.
As much as Celtic have bigger fish to fry this season than this tie, Falkirk certainly do though, and their chief concern has to be tightening up at the back. The same frailties that saw them concede two to Dundee United and three to Livingston last weekend were on display once more, albeit against a step up in opposition.
The news that winger Ethan Ross will be missing for a significant spell with an ankle injury though will sting McGlynn and the Bairns more than this loss will.
Scott Bain finally seen again at Celtic Park
It is somewhat ironic that the keeper had to leave Celtic to get finally get another game at Celtic Park, with his last appearance here coming as a substitute for Joe Hart as he took his curtain call in the last minute of the 2023/24 season, despite being on the books for another whole year.
If he rather had his feet up during that period, then the opposite was true here, with the former Celt kept busy as his old pals peppered his goal, particularly early on.
He did well to repel a fair few of them in fairness, as the 33-year-old showed that the old agility was still there, and while it may have been harsh on Nicky Hogarth to have been usurped from the position after an impressive campaign last season, the experienced Bain could be key if Falkirk are to survive this term.

Jamie Vardy tipped to join Celtic for the season – but there's a catch

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAMIE VARDY has been tipped to go to Celtic for a season under former coach Brendan Rodgers. But there are not one but potentially two major stumbling blocks to the move, according to a pundit. 1 Brendan Rodgers worked with Jamie Vardy when head coach of Leicester Credit: AFP Vardy, 38, is a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of the season. He has been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia, MLS and at one point was mentioned as a potential target for Rangers. But in recent weeks his name has appeared in connection with a move to Celtic. That's in part because Brendan Rodgers doesn't appear to be 100 per cent sold on Adam Idah while new signings Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand can be considered as more long-term projects, particularly so in the case of Osmand. The Hoops reportedly had a bid of £6.9million thrown out for Romanian striker Louis Munteanu last month but in Vardy they would be able to obtain a cheaper alternative to add firepower in front of goal. Former Celtic striker Andy Walker thinks even at his age, Rodgers could get another season out of Vardy and he would be a potent striker. Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, he said: "Brendan Rodgers would know the player, his ability, his fitness levels. "I know he's 38 but I'm sure you could get another season out of him if he is still really fit, well and sharp. No one would know that better than Brendan Rodgers. "Whether he is on the list, I'm sure they've got strikers they are looking at." But fellow pundit and ex-Rangers coach Billy Dodds thinks Vardy's wage demands could make a move difficult - combined with the fact that he might not even start every week. Sarmiento launch a throw back shirt design inspired by Celtic Dodds said: "He would cost a lot in wages but he wouldn't cost a lot in transfer fee because he's a free. It wouldn't be a daft one, but they'll probably have other signing targets in the striking position before Vardy. "The one thing I would add is that I've been reading that he wants to play. I don't think he's guaranteed that at Celtic playing week in, week out. "When you get someone of that experience and he's not playing, I'm not saying he wouldn't be happy but he's already made it clear he wants to go somewhere and play every game before he finishes his career." Hotline launches Russell Martin doomsday countdown as Celtic have Rangers old timer living in a state of fear

Graeme Young hears from a fanbase on the brink who have major concerns over a the new Ibrox era Scoring four goals in a Premier Sports Cup win doesn't sound like the start of a fresh wave of panic gripping Ibrox, however, the natives are restless once more. ‌ Rangers barely convinced in the 4-2 win over Alloa as Russell Martin' s fringe men mixed a clutch of first-teamers made heavy work of the League One side on a baking night in Glasgow. ‌ Now Martin is running the gauntlet with four defining games looming. Brugge are up first in a £40m golden ticket encounter to reach the Champions League, before St Mirren in Paisley and the return in Belgium before they welcome Celtic to Ibrox on August 31. ‌ The mood has shifted and the natives are unable to hide their growing fears. John Spence, South Ayrshire, said: "The calls for Martin's head have begun. Over the next 4 games, failure in the Champions League, against St Mirren and then, of course Celtic, he could be gone by the end of August! "Even by our recent standards this is a new low. And who will replace him? There wasn't exactly an orderly queue of outstanding candidates as recently as a few weeks ago. So the new regime may stick with Martin and we will need to follow. But they must realise that's a large sum removed from the goodwill bank early doors, and that it's not a bottomless pit." Donald Dundas, Uddingston, said: "I'm sorry but I'm afraid Russell Martin is full of the brown stuff in some of the drivel he comes away with in match interviews. If they play like that v Celtic his jacket will be on the shoogly peg. Victory over Alloa is hardly the huge improvement he said was coming. "Talking of St Mirren the new threat after putting out the big Edinburgh team that according to the usual mob are going to be this season's next best thing?" And the palpable fear surrounding Martin's men has a lifelong worry that the team he loves won't be able to stop Celtic from proverbially ramming his face into his own birthday cake. ‌ Rick Hart emailed: "I will be 70 on August 31 and I am dreading it, Celtic will have a field day with this Rangers team, how on earth did Rothwell, Aarons and Dowell ever get a Rangers top, I thought last year was bad this year is going to be horrendous, no imagination , no passion , no defence and a manager well out of his depth with his ability , tactics and team selection , sorry but Martin will be gone faster than he thinks and to be honest he is only here for the money, "Rangers threw Ferguson under the bus for him? Ok, we beat the mighty Alloa 4 -2 myself. I think Rangers were lucky, because Alloa played with passion and guts, something that is lacking in the Rangers team." Phillip Borland emailed: "What a load of rubbish this Rangers team is we were lucky to beat Alloa .We should never have got a penalty against them no way, that should never have been allowed Alloa was robbed. We can also say goodbye to the Champions League. There's no way any of the players we have got will win against Brugge. We are a terrible team, nothing has changed since last season, new manager and 10 new players in and we are still garbage." ‌ Across the city, it's all going well on the pitch, however, complaints are never far away as a lack of transfers takes a backseat for once as a punter begs for Brendan Rodgers to fight for his £9million striker. Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton said: "With Adam Idah's confidence at an all time low and after Kenny not giving Brendan Rodgers food for thought with a average performance leading the line against Falkirk I would have liked to hear Rodgers give Idah a vote of confidence saying he can bag the necessary goals in building up a lead for the second leg, in not doing so I'm convinced Maeda will start through the middle." ‌ Hearts don't need the data to tell them they were off it against St Mirren and one onlooker used the Jambos display as a launchpad to get stuck into Derek McInnes. Carl McCoy, Paisley, said: "So it didn't take long for the Tony Bloom/ Derek McInnes juggernaut to come to a shuddering halt. Does anyone really believe that McInnes is anything more than a bang average manager whose teams play horrific football? "His Hearts team are now showing the same traits as his previous sides - falling over at every turn, the dark side of the game in full view. The easy time he gets from all sides is quite something and will never change. I don't pity the Hearts fans because they support Hearts, but I don't think they'll have much to cheer for with him in charge." Hibs have a new hero and Kieron Bowie's brilliance has raised many questions about a burgeoning career ahead. But the Hibees say back off and reckon the big two from Glasgow don't deserve him. John Scott, Grassmoor, said: "What an insult to Hibs. Kieron Bowie scores a spectacular goal and along comes certain members of the media to basically say he's too good for the Hibees. In fact some claim he could be snapped up by either of the Old Firm before the end of the current window. "He's the same player Hibs signed from Fulham while the Glasgow giants didn't pay him any regard. I hope the Hibs board stand firm and dismiss any last minute bids. John McGinn was the biggest rip off of Scottish football ever and Villa knew it. If all these clubs really want Kieron then think of a number and double it."
