PM Modi lays down 5 priorities for building disaster-resilient infra
In a video address to the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure 2025, PM Modi said strengthening early-warning systems and coordination is another crucial aspect.
He noted that India has established a tsunami-warning system benefitting 29 countries and that it recognises the Small Island Developing States (SIDA) as large-ocean countries and the need for special attention to their vulnerabilities.
With the event being hosted in Europe for the first time, Modi thanked French President Emmanuel Macron and extended his best wishes to him for the upcoming United Nations Oceans Conference.
In his remarks, he prime minister noted that the conference's theme is "Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions" and underscored the vulnerability of coastal regions and islands to natural disasters and climate change.
He cited recent disasters, including Cyclone Remal in India and Bangladesh, Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean, Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia, Hurricane Helene in the United States, Typhoon Usagi in the Philippines and Cyclone Chido in parts of Africa.
Modi emphasised that these disasters have caused significant damage to lives and property, reinforcing the need for resilient infrastructure and proactive disaster management.
Recalling India's past experiences with devastating disasters, including the super-cyclone of 1999 and the tsunami of 2004, he highlighted how the country adapted and rebuilt with resilience, constructing cyclone shelters across vulnerable areas and contributing to the establishment of the tsunami-warning system benefitting 29 nations.
Modi said disaster resilience requires innovative financing and called for the creation of actionable programmes to ensure that developing countries have access to the necessary funds.
He highlighted the necessity of strengthening early-warning systems and coordination, noting their critical role in facilitating timely decision making and effective last-mile communication.
The prime minister called for the construction of infrastructure that remains steadfast against time and tide, emphasising the need for resilience in development.
He called for global efforts to build a strong and disaster-resilient future for the world.

Kartavya Bhavan embodies resolve to fulfil nation's dreams, says PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan, the first of the ten upcoming Common Central Secretariat buildings to house the bureaucracy. The ambitious project is aimed at bringing ministries and departments under one roof for efficiency. Kartavya Bhavan-03, the first to be inaugurated, will house the Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, DoPT, Petroleum & Natural Gas ministries, and the Principal Scientific Adviser's office. Many key ministries currently function from ageing buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, and Nirman Bhawan, constructed between the 1950s and 1970s, which are now "structurally outdated and inefficient," according to the government. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry has plans to construct ten buildings as part of the Common Central Secretariat under the government's Central Vista redevelopment project. Two under-construction buildings, 2 and 3, are scheduled to be completed by next month, while construction work on CCS 10 will be finished by April next year. The project of CCS buildings 6 and 7 will be completed by October 2026. On Tuesday, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that offices functioning from the four bhawans will shift to four new locations on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Minto Road, and Netaji Palace temporarily for two years, while the construction is carried out. A few buildings are currently proposed to be retained. These include the National Museum, National Archives, Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan (External Affairs Ministry), and Dr Ambedkar Auditorium, which are new buildings. Vanijya Bhawan will also be retained. Under the Central Vista redevelopment plan, the government has already constructed a new Parliament building and the Vice President Enclave, and redeveloped the Kartavya Path that spans from Vijay Chowk to India Gate. Besides the Common Central Secretariat, the government will also construct an Executive Enclave that will house a new Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Cabinet Secretariat, India House, and National Security Council Secretariat. Under the second phase of the Executive Enclave, a new Prime Minister's residence will be constructed.

Speaking at the inauguration of Kartavya Bhavan-the new premises for key ministries such as Home and External Affairs-Modi said that the modern complex would be a hub for shaping the future through the policies and decisions of the Amrit Kaal era."Together, let us make India the world's third-largest economy and script the success story of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat," the Prime Minister said. In recent speeches, Modi has highlighted the importance of promoting domestically manufactured products to boost the economy and generate employment. Kartavya Bhavan, inaugurated by the Prime Minister, will now house crucial ministries, including Home, External Affairs, Rural Development, Petroleum, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Along with Kartavya Bhavan, over four crore pucca homes have been built for the poor. While the National War Memorial was erected, more than 300 medical colleges came up. Bharat Mandapam was built in Delhi, and so were more than 1,300 Amrit Bharat Railway stations," Modi said."Kartavya," Modi underlined, reflects the duties of citizens, reminding them that rights must be balanced with responsibilities toward transparency, Modi said his government has eliminated 10 crore fake beneficiaries from welfare schemes, resulting in a saving of Rs 4,30,000 crore. The beneficiaries are happy that the resources of the country have been saved, he also noted that more than 1,500 outdated laws from the colonial era have been scrapped, along with 4,000-plus obsolete compliance requirements. Kartavya Bhavan is the first of ten planned buildings that will eventually accommodate key Union ministries and departments.

PM Modi likely to visit China for SCO Summit from Aug 31 to Sept 1
