The parliamentary board of the BJP reportedly took a unanimous decision, after discussing with alliance partners and the opposition parties to ensure a smooth VP election.
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan has been serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra since July 31, 2024. He previously served as the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He also held additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry between March and July 2024.

A veteran BJP leader, Radhakrishnan was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore and previously served as the Tamil Nadu BJP state president. The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25.
Although the Vice President serves a five-year term, the position became vacant when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health concerns.
The elections of the Vice President are governed by the provisions of Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution. The Election Commission notifies the VP polls by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952.
The Vice President of India is chosen through an indirect election conducted by an electoral college consisting of both elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution of India, the election of the Vice President shall be held by the system of proportional representation using single transferable vote, and the voting at such election shall be by secret ballot.
Importantly, MPs are not bound by any party whip during this process.
To be eligible for the post of Vice President of India, a candidate must be an Indian citizen, at least 35 years old, and qualified to be a member of the Rajya Sabha. They must not hold any office of profit.
For the nomination to be valid, it must be supported by at least 20 proposers and 20 seconders, who are electors from the electoral college.
The election of the Vice President shall be held by the system of proportional representation using single transferable vote.
The Vice President serves a five-year term but can remain in office beyond that period until a successor is elected. The Constitution places no limit on the number of terms one can serve, meaning a former Vice President is free to run again, whether immediately after a term ends or after a gap.

Rajnath canvasses in support of Radhakrishnan, YSRCP pledges to back NDA candidate
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday (August 18, 2025) gathered support for the National Democratic Alliance's Vice-Presidential candidate, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, reaching out to non-NDA parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Mr. Singh, meanwhile, managed to secure the support of the YSRCP after he spoke to party leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. YSRCP Lok Sabha member Maddila Gurumoorthy confirmed that his party, with 11 MPs — four in the Lok Sabha and seven in the Rajya Sabha — will be voting for Mr. Radhakrishnan. The DMK is part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which held a meeting on Monday (August 18, 2025) evening, for its own candidate for the post of Vice-President. Thus, there was not much optimism in the NDA that it would support Mr. Radhakrishnan, who is also from Tamil Nadu. BJD sources said that since Naveen Patnaik was hospitalised on Sunday (August 17, 2025) evening due to dehydration, no meeting as yet has been called by the party, to consider the issue. The Electoral College for the Vice-Presidential election consists of members of both Houses of Parliament, and the NDA is comfortably placed to win the election. The election was necessitated after Mr. Dhankhar, the former Vice-President, resigned midterm citing health reasons, with two years left of his tenure. The election for the Vice-President's post will be held on September 9.

Differences must not become disputes: S Jaishankar to China's Wang
India and China on Monday discussed economic and trade issues, including resumption of border trade and direct flights, with New Delhi again flagging its concerns over Beijing's curbs on the export of rare earth minerals. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi landed in New Delhi on Monday evening for a two-day visit. He held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. In his opening remarks during the discussion, Jaishankar said that 'the basis for any positive momentum' in India-China ties 'is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas'. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward, he said. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship,' Jaishankar told Wang, 'our two nations now seek to move ahead'. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides, he said. Jaishankar said the two countries must be guided in this endeavour by the three mutual, 'mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.' 'Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting on October 23, 2024, in the Russian city of Kazan, on the sidelines of the Brics Summit, paved the way for de-escalation in the border areas between the two countries after the friction in ties since the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020. Jaishankar and Wang's discussion will also lay the groundwork for the Indian PM's visit to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31 and September 1, where he is slated to meet the Chinese President on the sidelines of the summit. The two sides discussed the international situation. 'We seek a fair, balanced and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day,' Jaishankar said. 'In the current environment, there is clearly the imperative of maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy as well,' he said. The fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority, the EAM said. Wang's visit is the first by a Chinese minister since Modi and Xi's Kazan meeting in October, Jaishankar noted. 'Overall, it is our expectation that our discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship between India and China, one that serves both our interests and addresses our concerns,' he said, wishing China a successful SCO Summit that it is hosting. In Beijing, China on Monday said Foreign Minister Wang's visit to India was aimed at working with New Delhi to deliver on important understandings reached between the leaders of the two sides and decisions taken during the previous round of border talks. Wang is slated to visit Pakistan later this week.

Ballia: BJP MLA from Bansdih Assembly constituency, Ketki Singh, on Monday urged the Centre and the state government to rename Ghazipur after Maharishi Gautam, the father of Maharishi Parashuram. She said she has written a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in this regard. "All such names that remind us of our times of disgrace, which have been kept to glorify the invaders and praise them, all such names should be removed, and the birthplace of great men should be named after them. I want that Ghazipur district's name should be changed," Ketki Singh told reporters at her residence in Bansdih. The MLA claimed that the history of Ghazipur is close to Maharishi Gautam, and cited that the district's name must be changed as Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj. "Changing the name will inspire the coming generation. How can a country that forgets its history build its future? If you forget your origin, you will never be able to build a future," she said. "We have read that Akbar was great. Such was his greatness that it has been written on the dead bodies of lakhs of Hindus," said the 41-year-old.
