BERLIN: Germany's president on Monday congratulated nationalist Karol Nawrocki on winning Poland's presidential election, calling on the two countries to "cooperate closely based on democracy and rule of law".
Poland and Germany are key to "ensuring a future of security, freedom and prosperity for Europe", Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement, after Nawrocki defeated pro-EU Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski in a run-off Sunday.
The nationalist historian's victory is a major blow to Poland's pro-EU government and could revive tensions with the bloc as well as with Berlin.
After Germany's new Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Warsaw last month, Nawrocki accused Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is from the same party as Trzaskowksi, of being Germany's "butler".
He has frequently called for Berlin to pay reparations for World War II, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland.
He told a Polish daily that "reparations are about historical justice" and pledged to "fight for them from the first day of my presidency".
In his statement, Steinmeier said that Berlin "is aware of its perpetual responsibility for the great suffering that Germans have brought upon Poland".
A government spokesman later added at a regular press briefing that Germany considered the issue of reparations settled.
Berlin has rejected previous Polish claims for compensation, saying Warsaw officially renounced such demands in a 1953 accord.
Some in Poland dispute the legality of the agreement, pointing to procedural irregularities and arguing that Poland signed it under duress as a satellite of the Soviet Union.
The German government's spokesman said he hoped that "a bit of calmness and reason" as well as "a view of Germany based on the facts" would return now that the election campaign was over.
Migration is another issue set to cause friction, with Nawrocki urging stricter border controls with Germany to stop migrants from crossing into neighbouring Poland.
Soon after taking office, Merz announced plans to crack down on irregular migration by rejecting most asylum seekers at Germany's borders -- moves that have already drawn criticism from Tusk.
Steinmeier nevertheless said he hoped that Poland and Germany would work closely together at "a very challenging time for Europe".
"A strong Europe needs good German-Polish cooperation," he said.

Government offers enclave, woos Italian industry to invest

BRESCIA: Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday suggested an exclusive Italian enclave, complete with schools and hospitals, in one of the industrial towns as he sought to woo investors to set up businesses in the country. Goyal said the industrial town in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where Maharashtra govt is eyeing an expansion over 5,000 acre, or proposed one near Dighi port could be dedicated for the purpose. Besides, he said Italian companies could decide to set up the enclave in other industrial towns that are coming up, including in South India and places such as Gaya. "You can have all the social infrastructure so that your engineers, managers who come to India feel at home. You can have your own schools, hospitals, hotels and restaurants," he said, while addressing Italian companies here. In the past, govt has sought to woo investors from Japan through a dedicated industrial park in Neemrana. While a similar plan for KoreaGn companies was also developed by the Rajasthan govt, it could not be implemented. Goyal's comments come amid a push by Italy and other European nations, seeking to boost non-EU exports. Italian deputy PM Antonio Tajani said his govt is pushing exports and investments to India. "We need to join forces with countries that have a large trade opportunity. India has the largest population, it is a great democracy and protagonist of the Indo-Pacific. We are ready to welcome Indian investment. They can have joint ventures (with Italian companies) and we can work together in other countries," he said. ‘Sometimes it's better to let them fight...': Trump's shocking war analogy of Russia-Ukraine war

At the White House, Donald Trump met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss the escalating Russia-Ukraine war. Trump called it a 'bloodbath,' citing 5,000–6,000 soldiers dying weekly. He revealed a 2+ hour call with Putin and used a striking analogy likening the war to two kids fighting. Trump blamed Biden for reviving Nord Stream 2 and insisted he's 'not friends with anybody,' while Merz urged U.S. leadership to help end the conflict, invoking the legacy of D-Day. India proposes 'Italy Enclave' to strengthen strategic partnership

Brescia [Italy], June 5 (ANI): India on Thursday proposed establishing an 'Italy Enclave' within one of its industrial towns, offering Italian companies and workers a comprehensive ecosystem that would serve as a 'home away from home.' Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made the proposal during the India-Italy Strategic Partnership meeting here, as part of his two-day official visit to Italy. 'We want to offer an Italy Enclave, create a home away from home so that no Italian feels they are away from home,' Goyal said. 'The Italy Enclave should have Italian schools so their children can receive education, hospitals where they can access better treatment with Italian insurance coverage, along with facilities like shopping centers and Italian restaurants. This way, India can showcase its appreciation for Italy, ' he added. Goyal identified several potential locations for the proposed enclave, including the industrial town in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where the Maharashtra government is planning expansion over 5,000 acres, and the proposed site near Dighi port. He added that Italian companies could also establish enclaves in other emerging industrial towns across South India and locations such as Gaya in Bihar. 'You can have all the social infrastructure so that your engineers and managers who come to India feel at home. You can have your own schools, hospitals, hotels and restaurants,' Goyal told Italian companies during his address. Goyal's proposal comes as Italy and other European countries seek to boost non-EU exports and investments. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani emphasised his government's commitment to expanding trade ties with India. 'We need to join forces with countries that have large trade opportunities. India has the largest population, is a great democracy and a protagonist of the Indo-Pacific,' Tajani told reporters. 'We are ready to welcome Indian investment. They can have joint ventures with Italian companies and we can work together in other countries. Italy-India is a strategic relationship.' Indian Actor Kabir Bedi, who was here to participate in the India-Italy strategic Partnership summit, says, 'The idea of Italian conclave is good. Not just one, there should be multiple Italian conclaves. I have seen this in action. I shot a Bollywood film with Shah Rukh Khan in Bulgaria, 'Dilwale'. Several Italians live in their communities, in Bulgaria. They have their schools, restaurants, clubs. They feel they never went out of Italy. They do everything in Bulgaria, they respect Bulgaria but their family life and education life continues there. If such conclaves are built in India too, it will be a huge incentive that more and more industralialists and investors come to India and make their base. So that they do no feel that they are far away from their home while in India...' The proposal represents a significant step in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations, offering Italian businesses an attractive platform for expansion into the Indian market while providing a comprehensive support infrastructure for their operations.
