Favor And Fortune can take leg one in £100,000 Cheltenham festival bonus

The Guardian28-02-2025

The £100,000 bonus on offer if the winner of Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso can follow up in any race at the Cheltenham festival has turned what is already the richest handicap hurdle in Scotland into one of the most interesting and competitive events in the immediate run-up to National Hunt's showpiece meeting, and several of the sharpest trainers in the business have runners towards the head of the market for Saturday's renewal.
Foremost among those is Emmet Mullins, who announced himself as one of the shrewdest handlers around – and well in advance of his Grand National success with Noble Yeats in 2022 – when The Shunter took the Morebattle in 2021 and then followed up in the Plate, one of the festival's most competitive handicap chases, less than a fortnight later.
Mullins relies this year on the mare Vischio, who joined the yard after winning a competitive race at Punchestown in November and followed up on her first start for her new trainer in a stronger race at the Dublin Racing Festival.
She showed an abrupt turn of foot to go five lengths clear at Leopardstown and given her trainer's well-earned reputation for priming a handicapper, it is no surprise to see her installed as the favourite in the early betting, not least as Mullins has gone to the trouble of entering her in three handicap hurdles at the festival.
Her last two runs were off 111 and 119, however, and Vischio is a stone higher in the ratings on Saturday. She might yet prove to be thrown in even off 133, but this is an intensely competitive heat and there is little value in a price of around 5-1.
Tellherthename and Alnilam have similar profiles at better odds but both are potential front-runners Chae Favour And Fortune (3.30), who is entered in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham, could be the one to benefit if the leaders go off too fast.
He ran an eye-catching race to finish fourth in Newbury's ultra-competitive William Hill Hurdle last time, will race off the same mark on Saturday and had enough class to finish sixth in last year's Supreme Novice Hurdle.
Kelso 1.10 A wind op since his chase debut could make the difference for Kidman, who travelled like the best horse last time but faded in the closing stages.
Newbury 1.20 Quick Wave has gone well fresh in the past and is an interesting debutant in veterans' events returning from another extended break.
Kelso 1.45 Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning is the percentage call over Iroko, a leading Grand National contender, to bounce back from a disappointing showing in the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day.
Doncaster 2.05 Grade One company was a step too far for World Of Fortunes at Leopardstown last time but she will be tough to beat dropping back to Listed level.
Kelso 2.20 Young Jack goes well at this track, William Maggs is well worth his 5lb claim and early offers of around 20-1 are worth an each-way interest.
Kelso: 1.10 Kidman 1.45 Grey Dawning 2.20 Young Jack 2.55 Laganhill 3.30 Favour And Fortune (nap) 4.04 Maple 4.39 Leader In The Park.
Newbury: 1.20 Quick Wave 1.55 Epinephrine 2.30 Jasmin De Grugy 3.05 Kel Raffles 3.45 Prince Quali 4.15 Ninth Loch 4.50 There Runs Mary.
Doncaster: 1.30 Doctor Kildare 2.05 World Of Fortunes 2.40 Tommy's Oscar 3.15 Twig (nb) 3.55 Patriotik 4.31 Muzaafar 5.07 Norn Iron.
Newcastle: 4.10 Carrados 4.45 Sharon Curly 5.15 Mighty Nebula 5.45 Three Beauz 6.15 Pop Favorite 6.45 Tomorrow Day 7.15 Hartswood.
Southwell: 4.25 Moulin Booj 5.00 Fast Fred 5.30 Sid's Annie 6.00 Man Of La Mancha 6.30 Match Anthem 7.00 Mickey Mongoose 7.30 Dash Power 8.00 Horus 8.30 Ustath.
Doncaster 2.40 It has been stop-start for Tommy's Oscar since has last win in April 2024, but even under top weight he could still have enough ability to be competitive over a track and trip where he was a convincing winner off just a 3lb lower mark earlier the same season.
Kelso 2.55 Half the field are unbeaten over hurdles and Laganhill, a seven-year-old who did not see a track until December 2024, could continue to make up for lost time.
Doncaster 3.15 Twig, runner-up in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham last year, reverts to chasing for the first time this season with Beau Morgan taking off a useful 5lb.
Newbury 3.45 A chance for Prince Quali, who looks overpriced at around 16-1, to bounce back after an uncharacteristic fall last time out.

My ‘one-of-a-kind' jockey dad died in a fall just days before I was born – now I'm riding winners for Willie Mullins

A JOCKEY whose dad died in a tragic fall just days before he was born is rocketing up the ranks - banging in winners for Willie Mullins. Sean Cleary-Farrell has three winners from just four rides for the all-conquering Irish trainer this year. 2 He notched his first career double aboard Mullins ' odds-on hotshots Spanish Harlem and Keep Up at Punchestown on Sunday. Mullins' right-hand man David Casey was full of praise for Cleary-Farrell after. And he hinted he could get the leg up in some big-money races aboard Spanish Harlem - who was fourth in the bet365 Gold Cup - when the new season gets going properly. He said: "Sean is in Willie's full-time and is a good rider and works hard. "He took a couple weeks off and rode a winner on the Flat in France. "These days are for lads like him. He's getting his chance and he's taking it with both hands. "Sean gave Spanish Harlem a good ride and he kept galloping well. "I'd say nicer ground suits him and obviously those extended trips. He ran a real good race at Sandown. "I'd say he'll be looking at races like the Kerry National and Munster National." Cleary-Farrell's rapid success is doubly impressive given the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding his father's death aged just 22. Sean Cleary was one of Ireland's 'leading young riders' and described as a 'one-of-a-kind' talent when he was killed in a race at Galway in October 2003. Tragically, Sean Jnr was born just two months after his father passed as a result of severe head injuries suffered in the spill. Describing his father, Cleary-Farrell said on The Irish Field: "My late father Sean died tragically following a fall at Galway, a couple of months before I was born. "Unfortunately, there are very few videos or DVDs of his rides but photos of his winners still adorn the walls of my grandparents' house. "Growing up I was always aware of who he was and what an accomplished jockey he had been during his short career." Mullins took Cleary-Farrell under his wing at Closutton and the conditional jockey says he loves it there. The Irish handler has also started giving more rides to the hugely promising Anna McGuinness, who had another winner under the Mullins banner last weekend. Given the superstars they ride out at Mullins' HQ every day, it's no surprise they're finding it relatively easy work on the racecourse proper. Speaking after his latest win, Cleary-Farrell said: "I can't describe how I feel, it will take me a while to come down off this cloud. "A big thank you to Willie for giving me the opportunity to ride these horses, he's looking after me." Sounds like they'll be looking out for each other in the winner's enclosure for many months, and hopefully years, to come. . Remember to gamble responsibly A responsible gambler is someone who:

It read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby. "He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side. "A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather." Tributes have flooded in, racing pundit Jim McGrath wrote: "A one off, brilliant trainer, great company, down to earth, yet fun and straightforward to deal with. "Loved life and people. Condolences to all the family and his many friends. RIP." Fans added: "Heartfelt condolences to you and your family Tim. One of the greatest racehorse trainers in history. A legacy that will never be forgotten." Another said: "What a man and what a dynasty he founded. So sorry to hear of the passing of Peter Easterby - a very fine Yorkshireman indeed." The three-time Champion Trainer started with seven horses at his Habton Grange stable in the 1950s. He went on to become one of the most decorated in the sport and he is the only to have ever recorded over 1,000 winners in Britain in both flat and National Hunt racing. Back-to-back Champion Hurdle winners Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon were trained by Easterby in the 70s and 80s. Saucy Kit, Alverton and Little Owl were other horses that rode to glory for him. His son Tim succeeded him as a trainer when he retired in 1996. THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.. Willie Mullins snaps up ‘promising' new jockey who rode incredible 150-1 winner

She could have a big future in the saddle TOP TALENT Willie Mullins snaps up 'promising' new jockey who rode incredible 150-1 winner Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WILLIE MULLINS has snapped up a 'promising' new jockey - as an army of new recruits start arriving at his Closutton HQ. Anna McGuinness banged in her first winner for the all-conquering trainer with victory aboard the JP McManus-owned I Am River at Kilbeggan on Sunday. McGuinness came in for praise from McManus' racing manager Frank Berry afterwards. And this success could pave the way to a whole load more rides in the future. She got the leg up on Mullins' A Penny A Hundred in the recent Mayo National at Ballinrobe, finishing third and picking up a cheque for £7,500. Victory on I Am River came on just her third ride for Mullins - who keeps a close eye on Anna when she rides work at his Cork yard. Beaming Berry said: "The horse jumped great and got a lovely ride from Anna. "She got him into a lovely rhythm, and you'd be delighted with him. "Anna is riding out in Willie's and finished third in the Mayo National and couldn't have done better." Incredibly, McGuinness' first ever win came on freak 150-1 outsider Feast in a Downpatrick bumper in July 2023. Labelled a very 'promising' conditional rider, McGuinness has three career wins but will surely bang in a load more given the chance. Her addition to Mullins' jockey ranks comes as he continues to add fresh talent to his massive squad of horses. Among them is £125,000 point-to-point purchase Bentraghhill. Mullins' trusted right-hand man Harold Kirk gave the winning bid for the 'gorgeous' four-year-old at the sales last week. He comes from Wilson Dennison, who previously owned Mullins stars Yorkhill, Shaneshill and Bellshill. Meanwhile, Audrey Turley, who owns Galopin Des Champs, has sent Looking For Eight to Mullins. And point-to-point winner Arcadian Emperor is another to have arrived recently. That lot will be joined by Mullins' £300,000 purchase and Cheltenham bumper winner Poetisa.
