Jharkhand lifts night shift ban for women
The bill was tabled in the Jharkhand Assembly on August 2, 2023.
A Raj Bhavan official said that the bill was passed in the Assembly and forwarded it to the Raj Bhavan and the Raj Bhavan sent it for approval to the President.
'The President has given the approval on August 1, 2025 and the Raj Bhavan has received the approval on Thursday and it has been forwarded to the state government, 'the official said.
As per the bill, the entire responsibility of the safety and security of women employees will be of the concerned company and its management. Also, the consent of the women employees who will be made to work in night shift duty is also mandatory.
While speaking to The Hindu, Jharkhand Chief Inspector (Factory) Manish Kumar Sinha said, 'State government Labour Department will forward the approval to my office. Once it will be received, we will soon notify it in the state gazette. It will come into force within a week.'
Mr. Sinha further said, 'Earlier, the Factory Act 1948 did not allow women to work between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Now after the amendment women employees in factories have been given the right to work between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. which is considered the night shift.'
There are many factories in the state which work round the clock and women employees only work in general shift.
Tata Motors alone has over 4500 women employees in different branches. The company was already mulling over to increase the participation of women. Therefore, starting the night shift will increase employment of women.
Tatar Workers' Union Vice President Sanjay Singh welcomed the decision asserting that it will be given equal opportunities like men.
'It would be the responsibility of the company to provide them with a pick and drop facility and their security would also be concerned. The overall decision is very good but several steps should be taken for the safety of the women during night shift,'Mr. Singh said.

The DMK reacted sharply, accusing the Governor of making false allegations to malign the state government. 'Tamil Nadu is the forerunner in India. It's not just our claim, even the BJP-led Union government has released data that shows that our state is doing way better than BJP ruled states. Unable to accept this fact, he is angry and irritated, so the governor is whining against us in public events,' Stalin said. 'Tamil Nadu is the number 2 state in the school education system in India. Only because our state is peaceful, we have been able to sign ₹10-crore worth of investments in the last four years. As regards women's safety, citing National Crime Records Bureau statistics of 2022, he claimed BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh tops in crimes against women. Therefore, the governor should target BJP-ruled states, Stalin said. Stalin said Ravi should continue in Tamil Nadu 'as it is good for us'. During the event, the CM launched a Cooperative department initiative to provide interest-free crop loans to farmers applying online. An official release said the government had earlier announced that the pilot scheme will be launched in Dharmapuri before expanding it across the state. The effort involves disbursing the loan the same day it is applied online. The Stalin-led party and its allies had also boycotted the Governor's 'At Home' reception hosted on Independence Day. Constitutional validity does not mean desirability, ex-CJI Khanna tells one nation, one election panel
Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has told a parliamentary committee scrutinising the simultaneous election Bill that the constitutional validity of a proposal in no way amounts to a pronouncement upon the desirability or necessity of its provisions. In his written opinion to the committee, Justice Khanna, however, said arguments related to the dilution of the country's federal structure might be raised about the constitutional amendment Bill, as he listed the various claims made supporting and criticising the concept, sources said. Most of the experts, who have shared their views with the committee headed by BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary, have rejected the charge that the proposals are unconstitutional but have flagged some issues with the current provisions of the Bill. Justice Khanna, who is scheduled to interact with the committee on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), has joined a few other former CJIs in raising concerns over the extent of power given to the Election Commission (EC) in the Bill. He said the Bill conferred "unfettered discretion" on the EC in deciding that an Assembly poll could not be conducted along with that of the Lok Sabha, and to make a recommendation to the President on these lines, the sources said. "This clause will be open to question as violating and offending the basic structure of the Constitution on the ground of being arbitrary and offending Article 14 of the Constitution," he is learnt to have said. Article 14 deals with equality before law. Indirect President's rule Justice Khanna added, "Postponement of elections by the EC may result in indirect President's rule, in other words, the Union government taking over the reins of the State government. This will be questionable judicially, as violating the federal structure envisaged by the Constitution." Commenting on various arguments related to the Bill, he said the fact that simultaneous elections were held in 1951-52, 1957, 1962 and 1967, was a "coincidence", certainly not an express or not even an implied constitutional mandate. Justice Khanna said there was a difference between "merit review" and "judicial review". When the Supreme Court or High Courts uphold constitutional validity, it was a mere affirmation of the legislative power and that the amendment or the provision was not violative of the constitutional limitations, he said. "The court decisions in no way amount to pronouncement upon the desirability or necessity of such provisions," he added. Before Justice Khanna, former CJIs D.Y. Chandrachud, J.S. Khehar, U.U. Lalit and Ranjan Gogoi have interacted with the committee members on various provisions of what is often referred to as "one nation one election" Bill. The BJP and its allies have supported the Bill, asserting that it will boost growth by cutting down on expenditure caused by the relentless poll cycle, leading to frequent deployment of security and civil officials on poll duty and the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct. The Opposition has argued that it undermines democratic principles and weakens federal structure.
