‘Housefull 5' cruises ahead of ‘Thug Life' at box office, mints ₹91.83 crore in its opening weekend
Housefull 5, the latest instalment of one of the most successful comedy franchises in Indian cinema, is cruising at top speed at the box office. The comedy caper, featuring Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, and Riteish Deshmukh, has minted over ₹91.83 crore (nett) in its opening weekend in India.
This is far above what ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, starring veteran actor Kamal Haasan, has collected in its first four days. According to Sacnilk, the film earned merely ₹36.90 crore in its four-day opening weekend, which is far less than what even Kamal's previous release, the widely panned Indian 2, collected in its first four days (₹62.5 crore).
Housefull 5, which was expected to face stiff competition from Thug Life, collected ₹24.35 crore on day one, ₹32.38 crore on Saturday, and ₹35.10 crore on Sunday, taking the total to ₹91.83 crore.

Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, Housefull 5 features a star-studded cast that also features Nana Patekar, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangada Singh, Fardeen Khan, Chunky Pandey, Johnny Lever, Shreyas Talpade, Dino Morea, Ranjeet, Soundarya Sharma, Nikitin Dheer, and Akashdeep Sabir. Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Dutt appear in special cameos. The film is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.
The Hindu's review of the film called it 'entertainment for imbeciles,' stating, 'Director Tarun Mansukhani falters in carrying forward the unapologetic tone set by Sajid Khan. Hailing from the Dharma school, Tarun cocks a snook at animal lovers, generates racist jokes, and lets the camera loose on the cleavage but his heavy-handed approach results in diminishing returns. It is like descending into the gutter with the confidence that the clothes will remain unspoiled. The strand of suspense thriller is more potent, but the comic element does not serve it effectively.'
Thug Life, one of the biggest Tamil films of the year, reunites Kamal and Mani Ratnam after the iconic Nayakan (1987). With music scored by A.R. Rahman, the gangster drama also stars Silambarasan T.R. in a pivotal role alongside Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Bhagavathi Perumal, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra and Ali Fazal among others. The film is produced by Kamal's Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies.
The Hindu's review of the film read, 'A 163-minute chronicle of an elderly gangster's tryst with love, destiny, guilt and death, Thug Life is a gangster crime drama with stretches so generic and cold that you might wonder if it was really the filmmaker at the helm.'

Train journeys in India are all fun and games. But let us be honest, not everyone likes the food served on trains. At times, it's natural to crave something flavourful - be it burgers or pizzas. But is it possible to order such zesty items while on the train? Well, the answer to this question is a resounding yes. Anurag Kashyap Asked Nawazuddin Siddiqui ‘Bewakuf Hai Kya Tu?' For Acting Like Al Pacino
Last Updated: Nawazuddin Siddiqui tried channeling Al Pacino for Gangs of Wasseypur until Anurag Kashyap advised him to be natural. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's iconic performance as Faisal Khan in Gangs of Wasseypur has stood the test of time, but few know the actor was initially influenced by Hollywood legends while stepping into the role. In a recent interview, he shared that on the first day of shooting, he had actually tried to act like Al Pacino—until director Anurag Kashyap stepped in and changed the course of his performance. In a chat with Filmfare, Nawazuddin Siddiqui recalled, 'I went on the first day acting like Al Pacino. I had thought about emulating him beforehand. Thoda bhoot chaaya hua tha. I used to have phases – Robert De Niro for three months, Al Pacino for three months, and Brando. He said, 'Bewakoof hai kya tu? Don't do that, you will become stiff and stuck at one place.'" He continued by sharing how Kashyap noticed something off about his performance and approached him after the day's shoot. 'I did the scenes Al Pacino style on the first day of shoot. Anurag came to my room at night and asked what am I upto. He said you are being very stiff, Al Pacino type. I told him that I wanted to show my power," he said. But it was Kashyap's grounded advice that really stuck with him. 'Anurag said that woh mera kaam hai, main tere peeche 6 foot ke log khade kardunga, apne aap powerful lagega (That's my work, I will put tall men behind you, you will look powerful). Don't do anything, be normal. I couldn't sleep the whole night. I felt that he was right." Taking the director's words to heart, Siddiqui approached the character with a more natural mindset the following day. 'The very next day, I went and forgot everything. Bhaad mein jaaye, main Nawaz hu, main jaisa dikhta hu vaisa hi jaakar karunga." The transformation clearly worked. Gangs of Wasseypur, directed by Anurag Kashyap, became both a box-office hit and a critical success. Nawazuddin's portrayal of Faisal Khan became one of the most memorable characters in Indian cinema. The ensemble cast included standout performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadha, Pankaj Tripathi, and Jaideep Ahlawat, helping cement the film's cult status. First Published:

Adding to that the ₹38 crore from overseas, the film collected a total of ₹142.40 crore in three days. As per the film's team, Housefull 5 collected ₹91.83 crore net in India so far. This means that the film's collections have overtaken the lifetime of the Sunny Deol-starrer Jaat, which made ₹118.36 crore. The film will also beat Akshay's previous film, Kesari Chapter 2, which had made ₹144.62 crore. Depending on how the film performs on the weekdays, it will soon also beat Akshay's Sky Force collection of ₹149 crore. The only films to stand in Housefull 5's way after that would be Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar with its ₹184.6 crore collection and Ajay Devgn's Raid 2's ₹233.7 crore haul. For now, the ₹807.88 crore haul of Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava seems unbeatable. Housefull 5 tells the story of three men called Jolly being suspects for the murder of a rich industrialist on a cruise ship. The film has two different endings with two different killers, depending on the theatre at which it was watched. Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Dino Morea, Chitrangada Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Chunky Pandey, Nikitin Dheer and Johnny Lever also star in it.
