Thane man held for posing as labour union functionary to extort money
As per the businessman's complaint, accused Ghanshyam Naik (52), claiming to be part of a local headload workers' union, was visiting him at the former's work sites seeking money, Thane Crime Branch anti-extortion cell senior inspector Shailesh Salvi said.
"He first demanded ₹3000 per vehicle entering the work sites and then settled for a lumpsum amount of ₹5 lakh. We sent a decoy to Naik as part of a trap. He was held when he arrived to collect the extortion amount on July 22. He has been charged with extortion, criminal intimidation and other offences under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita," the official said.

Bescom smart meter case: Karnataka HC stays proceedings against Energy Minister K J George
The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday stayed criminal proceedings initiated against Energy Minister K J George and officials of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) with regard to alleged irregularities in the tendering process for installing smart meters. The order by a single-judge bench of Justice M I Arun came on George's petition that sought the quashing of the private complaints filed by several BJP MLAs last month before the special court for legislators under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections relating to criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and misappropriation of property, as well as provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. It also called for the quashing of a special court order that directed the Lokayuktha superintendent of police to submit a report on the matter. The BJP leaders allege that the tendering process was arranged in a way that favoured a particular company. Questions were also raised about the cost of meters compared to that in other states. George's counsel argued before the court that prior sanction was required to prosecute public servants. The minister argued in his petition that the complaints are motivated by political reasons. After hearing arguments, the court ordered, 'The case of the petitioners is that the impugned order is passed in violation of the provisions of Section 175(4) and 223(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and also in violation of Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. For the aforementioned reasons, there shall be stay of further proceedings pursuant to the impugned order…till next date of hearing.' The matter will be heard further at 2.30 pm on August 20. Smart meters would feature a GPS-based communication system, with users being able to make payments and monitor power usage in real time.

Man cheated of Rs 5 lakh with promise of TC job in railways
Agency: PTI Thane, Aug 7 (PTI) A 25-year-old man in the district was cheated of Rs 5 lakh by a person by promising to get him a job as a ticket collector in the railways, police said on Thursday. Vishal Vasant Niwate (37), the accused, has already been arrested in another case. As per Prathamesh More, a resident of Kalyan, he paid Niwate a total of Rs 5 lakh between January 10 and February 2 through UPI apps, said assistant inspector Pravin Bakal of Khadakpada police station. When More did not get any appointment letter and the accused gave him evasive replies, he filed a complaint a few days ago. Five arrested for large scale copper cable theft in south Delhi
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Five people have been arrested for stealing underground copper cables in South Delhi's CR Park and Sarita Vihar areas as contractors of a telecom company, a police official said on Thursday. Sameer, Amit, Arif, Shakeel and Amzad were arrested while attempting to excavate copper wire, he said. Police recovered around 1,400 kg of stolen copper wire, along with a truck and a JCB machine used in the crime. They said that all five were found involved in more than a dozen similar cases of theft across the city. 'The breakthrough came on the morning of July 28 when the police, during a routine patrol in the CR Park area, noticed unauthorised digging underway. While some of the suspects fled, Sameer and Amit were apprehended," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said. During initial questioning, they claimed to be working as contractors for a telecom company, but their responses raised suspicion. Upon sustained interrogation, they confessed to being part of a gang involved in copper wire theft, the officer said. A telecom official was called to verify the work and confirmed that no digging had been sanctioned in the area. A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Further investigation led to the arrest of three more accused on August 2. These included Arif, a known receiver of stolen copper wire, and Shakeel and Amzad. Police said Arif and Shakeel were previously arrested in a similar case in Haryana's Bhiwani district. 'During questioning, it emerged that the gang has been operating for nearly two years. They are based in Loni, Ghaziabad, and used heavy machinery such as trucks and JCBs to carry out thefts during early morning hours," the officer said. Efforts are underway to trace other absconding members of the crime syndicate.
