Virender Sehwag reveals why Delhi didn't pick Virat Kohli in IPL 2008

India Today01-05-2025

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has opened up on why Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) didn't choose Virat Kohli from the Under-19 players draft ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2008. The players from India's Under-19 World Cup-winning squad were put in a draft, and all eight teams had to choose the players one by one.Delhi ended up picking left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan instead of the Under-19 captain Virat Kohli, a move which is seen as the biggest missed opportunity in the history of IPL. Recently, Sehwag explained the reasoning behind the move and revealed that since Delhi was full of several batters, they needed a bowler and hence ended up choosing Pradeep Sangwan.advertisement"I was the captain who didn't pick Virat Kohli, and chose Pradeep Sangwan. He wasn't even on the auction table. We already had — I was there, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, Dilshan — we had so many top-order openers. Then there was AB de Villiers too. So we already had a lot of batsmen, but we didn't have bowlers. Our thinking was, let's pick a bowler, and a left-arm one to bring some variety. So maybe that was a good choice — Mahesh and Pradeep Sangwan, these were two young bowlers at the time. In the first three years we played, both of them did well for us,' Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
Sangwan had a quiet season in 2008 as he ended up picking five wickets in the seven innings. However, he made a strong comeback in the next season as he scalped 15 wickets from 13 innings in Delhi's run to the semi-final. Sangwan played for three seasons in Delhi and scalped 29 wickets.advertisementOn the other hand, Virat Kohli went on to become a legend of the game in the following years as he now holds the record for most runs scored in the history of IPL. The star batter remains the only player to play for a single team in IPL history across all seasons and is also the poster boy for the T20 extravaganza.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Has Virat Kohli emerged as a convenient scapegoat in the aftermath of the Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy?

How quickly we turn on our heroes. How zealously we enjoy the process of putting them on a pedestal with painstaking determination, only to pull them down at the first hint of perceived apathy. To say that Virat Kohli has the most frenzied, loyal fanbase across the cricketing world will be no exaggeration. India's former captain is an unquestioned crowd-puller whose cricketing persona resonates with millions. He has carried the hopes and prayers and good wishes of large sections and seldom disappointed, producing one epic after another with staggering regularity. A maiden IPL title, on his 18th attempt with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, ought to have been the icing on the cake. Apart from the World Test Championship trophy which will now never be his, the only glaring absence from his brimful cupboard of silverware was the symbol of supremacy in the IPL. That anomaly was corrected four nights back in Ahmedabad; Kohli himself, as one would expect, was the engine room that drove the RCB charge, finishing the tournament as the third highest run-getter while making those runs with flair and panache and a healthy strike-rate that hadn't always been his staunchest ally. RCB's six-run defeat of Punjab Kings on Tuesday night sent RCBians worldwide into the throes of ecstasy. Impromptu street parties broke out in Bengaluru and ran well into the early hours of Wednesday. Kohli was the toast, understandably; single-handedly for 17 years, he had ensured that the fan base grew in inverse proportion to RCB's on-field accomplishments. There was a sense of vindication, for him, and his and RCB's passionate supporters, when the tape was breasted at long last. Now, Kohli is the object of much scorn and vile abuse on social media, primarily. The social media space is increasingly becoming caustic and nasty, its relative anonymity encouraging keyboard warriors to spew venom without the fear of reprisals and recrimination. In the aftermath of the horrific tragedy outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday evening that swiftly devolved from celebratory to mournful, Kohli has been slammed in certain quarters for not being sensitive enough to the developments outside the venue and for continuing with the celebrations on the outfield of RCB's home base. Different people react differently to catastrophes, there is no template and no one has the right to expect anyone else to behave in the manner in which we want them to. Having oneself been caught bang in the middle of much of the jostling and shoving outside the venue as early as 3 pm, one can say with some confidence that no one who didn't experience that – and we truly are grateful that so many did not – cannot really fathom the rising panic, the thumping heart, the surge of adrenaline and the mode of self-preservation that the subconscious slips into. Kohli might have had something to do with the ungainly haste with which the celebratory events on Wednesday evening were put together in Bengaluru, a little over 15 hours after the title was secured in Ahmedabad, but he certainly wasn't responsible for it. Because of the imminence of the talisman's departure to London, those that saw an opportunity to cash in on being at the forefront of putting the show together showed scant regard for protocol and police advice, choosing to place personal interests ahead of safety and security measures that most certainly would have been in place had the police machinery had greater time to plan and organise an event certain to attract tens of thousands of RCB fans delighted that their long wait had finally come to an end. There has been criticism of Kohli being in the vanguard of the celebrations inside the stadium even after the stampede outside cruelly snuffed out 11 lives (as subsequent revelations confirmed). But anyone who watched the proceedings would have immediately noticed that he was merely going through the motions, that there was neither exuberance nor palpable shows of delight or orchestrating the crowd, such an inimitable Kohli feature. Suggestions that the stadium show ought to have been cancelled in its entirety didn't take into account the fact that the 35,000 people inside were largely unaware of the disaster that had unfolded outside. To have called off the show would most likely have triggered greater unrest and potentially unchecked anger. Because telephone networks were jammed, either by design or otherwise, word of the unspeakable tragedy was not yet common knowledge among those who populated the stands. Without going overboard, Kohli did what he had to under difficult circumstances. To fire salvos at him for alleged indifference doesn't do anyone credit. There were many glaring lapses that catalysed the avoidable cataclysm, but to lay the blame at Kohli's doorstep? Not done.

Venezuela defeats Bolivia 2-0 to approach World Cup intercontinental playoff spot

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela beat Bolivia 2-0 on Friday to extend its advantage in seventh place in South American World Cup qualifying and a potential spot in an intercontinental playoff for next year's tournament in North America. Bolivian Héctor Cuellar scored an own goal in the fifth minute after a simple pass to goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra ended in the back of the net. The hosts added a second in the 30th minute with striker Salomón Rondón, Venezuela's all-time top goal scorer with 47 goals, after he chested down a cross from Nahuel Ferraresi and scored with his left foot. Bolivia, which now trails Venezuela by four points with only three rounds to play, never threatened goalkeeper Rafael Romo at the Monumental Stadium in the eastern city of Maturin, Venezuela. Also on Friday, Colombia drew Peru 0-0 at home and failed to overtake Brazil in the standings. It was Colombia's fifth consecutive match without a win. The hosts at the Metropolitano Stadium in Barranquilla missed suspended striker Luis Díaz, who scored six goals in World Cup qualifying. Jhon Córdoba and Rafael Santos Borré were also out due to injury. World Cup champion Argentina, which secured its 2026 berth in March, leads South American qualifying after 15 matches with 34 points. Ecuador and Paraguay are next with 24 points, but the Ecuadorians have better goal difference. Brazil is in fourth place with 22 points. Uruguay and Colombia, both with 21 points, are in fifth and sixth, respectively, separated by goal difference. Venezuela, the only South American team to have never competed in a World Cup, has 18 points. Bolivia, which still has a chance of moving into seventh place, has 14. Peru and Chile have 11 and 10 points respectively. Several teams could secure their World Cup spots in Tuesday's next set of matches. Ecuador will clinch its spot with a win at Peru and Brazil could also secure its berth with a win, provided Venezuela doesn't add points at Uruguay. Colombia will have to beat Lionel Messi's Argentina in Buenos Aires to come close to its spot before the two final rounds in September. Bolivia will have to overcome Chile at home to keep its chances alive. All 10 South American nations play each other home and away. The top six countries qualify directly to the finals next year in North America. The seventh-place South American team will go into the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026 in North America when six teams will vie for the remaining two spots in the main tournament. soccer: /hub/soccer

Michael Clarke picks IPL youngster for big role in India's Test vs England, snubs Karun Nair: ‘This kid is a superstar'

Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke feels that India should go with Sai Sudharsan at the number 3 position for the upcoming Test series against England. Virat Kohli's retirement has left India with a challenging void to fill at the No. 4 spot in the Test lineup, and newly appointed captain Shubman Gill has emerged as the frontrunner to take on that responsibility. With Gill expected to shift down to No. 4, India must now identify a reliable option to slot in at No. 3 — a position he had made his own over the past few years. Clarke advised India to use Sai Sudharsan at the crucial number 3 spot as he is confident that the left-handed batter will definitely get an opportunity on England tour. "To me, this kid is a superstar, Sai Sudharsan. I think he is a number three in Test cricket. I think he is probably going to open the batting in time in India's T20I and ODI team. He is in their Test squad. He gets his first opportunity in England. Sudharsan had a dream IPL season with bat, and as he won the Orange Cap for scoring 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.21, with a strike rate of 156.17, a century and six fifties. The left-handed batter also walked away with the Emerging Player of the Year award, brushing off competition from Priyansh Arya, Noor Ahmad, and other youngsters. Clarke was thoroughly impressed with Sudharsan's IPL performances, highlighting his sound technique and ability to score heavily while taking minimal risks. "I think he can walk in straight to bat at number three. I think technically he's very good, he's got all the shots and mentally, he's ready. He really impressed me and he's a good looking player as well," Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast. However, another Indian batter has made a solid case to bat at the number 3 position - Karun Nair, who scored a brilliant double century in the India A's first game on England tour while batting at the same position. The likes of Gill and Sai Sudharsan were expected to play the second four-day game but their IPL commitments did not allow them. The duo would only get the intra-squad game to acclimatise before the first Test in Leeds.
