EastEnders star Michelle Ryan reveals 'emotional' secret cast reunion ahead of her shock return as Zoe Slater
EastEnders star Michelle Ryan has revealed she secretly reunited with the cast of the soap before her bombshell return as Zoe Slater.
Fans were stunned on Monday when it was revealed that the actress, 40, had reprised her role on the BBC soap after a 20-year absence.
Michelle's return had been kept a closely-guarded secret, with her return episode even held back from early release on BBC iPlayer.
Speaking to Richard Arnold on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain, Michelle shared that she met up with some of the cast who play the Slater clan, before heading to set to film her return scenes.
Admitting she had 'goosebumps' over her comeback, she said: 'I've always loved working with Jessie [Wallace].
'We actually went for a cast dinner with the Slater family so that I would feel welcome with the new people that I didn't know. And seeing her, she got so emotional.
'And when she found out I had the job again she was screaming and I was just like, this just feels like coming home.'
Michelle is set to appear in two more episodes of EastEnders this week, and will be back on the soap permanently later this year.
Teasing what fans can expect from Zoe now she's back on the Square, she added: 'Brace yourself for what she's going to be like, she's troubled. That's great for an actress to play, that chaos.
'It has felt like I've never been away, it was seamless and it was easy, so I'm really lucky.'
Michelle's surprise return to EastEnders aired in the closing moments of Monday's episode, as the soap's new showrunner Ben Wadey kicked off his tenure on the soap.
Speaking on her return, she said: 'It feels like coming home. After doing my first few scenes, it was like I'd never been away. It all happened at the right time.
'I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character.
'It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back.
Speaking to Richard Arnold on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain , Michelle shared that she met up with some of the cast who play the Slater clan, before heading to set to film her return
'When I was pitched the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision.'
EastEnders new boss, Executive Producer Ben Wadey added: 'Before I even stepped into the role, Zoe Slater was on my wish-list of returnees as, although we haven't seen her on screen for twenty years, her character has transcended time due to her popular storylines.'
Since Zoe's exit from Walford 20 years ago, it's been revealed that she and Kat have become estranged.
Teasing her character's reason to come back to Albert Square, Michelle added: 'I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess.
'She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own.
'She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.'
During her time on the show, Michelle was involved in one of EastEnders' biggest storylines with it revealed that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was in fact Zoe's mother and not her sister, with explosive scenes seeing her yell: 'You ain't my mother!', only for Kat to reply: 'Yes I am!'
Back in 2001, EastEnders' leopard-print-loving Kat Slater, who had been sexually abused by her uncle, finally revealed to her 'sister' Zoe that she was, in fact, her mother.
It remains one of the most famous and iconic moments in EastEnders' 40-year history - a scene that has been mimicked by soap fans worldwide.

Nicole Scherzinger 'shelves her upcoming solo album' following Broadway success
has reportedly 'shelved her upcoming solo album' following her success on Broadway. The singer, 45, who cancelled The Pussycat Dolls reunion shows in 2022, hasn't released a solo album since her 2014 dance-pop record, Big Fat Lie, failed to chart. She was said to be working on an album in 2022 but made her debut as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard in London the following year. The show then transferred to Broadway, where it has earned her both a Tony and a Laurence Olivier Award. Nicole is said to have 'spent a fortune' on her album after being dropped from her record label in 2015. A source told The Sun: 'Things were really coming together and she was hunting for a team to release it when Sunset Boulevard came along.' They added: 'The plan was to revisit the album after the West End run finished last year, but the show ended up going to Broadway and now she has loads of exciting offers on the table. 'She is in a totally different place in her life from when she wrote the album, so it's been shelved.' MailOnline has contacted Nicole Scherzinger's representative for comment. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has described Nicole as 'one of the most gifted singer-actresses I have seen perform my work… she is fearless, musically and dramatically.' After the Tony Awards last week, Nicole posted a video on Instagram during the ceremony where she performed a Sunset Boulevard number. In the gushing post, she wrote: 'This is a dream come true for me to perform As If We Never Said Goodbye. 'This is my love letter to the theatre. And to anyone with a deep passion for what you do, this was for you too.' She added: 'What an honour to share this song with a community that has held me and lifted me. I am forever grateful. As she accepted her Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical award, for her performance of fading Hollywood star Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, Nicole said: 'Growing up I always felt like I didn't belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong, and I have come home at last.' She then thanked her fiancé Thom Evans, adding he 'believes in me when I forget to believe in myself.' She also said: 'I'm so honoured to be recognised alongside these exceptional warrior women in this category. I want to thank you all so much for making this little Hawaiian/ Ukrainian/ Filipino girl's dream come true. So proud to represent.' After she thanked her family, she then thanked composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, sharing: 'It has been such an honour to be able to create with you the past 15 years.' Nicole has defied the odds to become the babe of Broadway, when just a few years ago, it would have seemed impossible for the former Pussycat Doll to win such a gong. Following a 'flop' attempt at a solo singing career after the pop group disbanded in 2010, her stage career had also looked doomed following a vicious spat with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber - despite her shout out to him on Sunday. Nine years ago, the former Pussycat Doll had just pulled out of his Broadway production of Cats at the last minute to take a seven-figure salary to return as a judge on ITV's X Factor. Furious Lord Webber declared that she would never 'get her Tony Award'. Lord Webber had raged: 'I'm furious because I really believe she's the most fantastically talented girl and I went out on a limb... but never mind, there'll be another girl on Broadway and Nicole will not get her Tony Award.' But following raving reviews in his new Sunset Boulevard show, Nicole has become Lloyd Webber's shining diamond on Broadway - and not only has he eaten his words, but he's become her biggest cheerleader. She has also appeared in Men in Black 3, voiced a role in Disney's Moana, and starred in stage productions of Rent and Cats.

Kim Woodburn didn't hold back. Her scouring judgments on just about everyone who dared cross her were caustic enough to strip the skin – 'verbal Vim', as one critic described them. This is Kim unleashing a tirade in the jungle on I'm A Celebrity in 2009, her victim the former glamour girl Katie Price: 'You're what I thought you'd be. You're a publicity-seeker. You live and die for publicity. You know full well you've got ten to 12 million people watching every night and you know, madam, you'll be all over the papers every day. Now stop it. Stop your nonsense.'
