WATCH: ‘What's that got to do with my talent?': Actors grapple with social media influencers infiltrating TV

Linda Sokhulu and Dumisani Mbebe addressed social media influencers' infiltration of television because of their strong social media presence. Speaking on two different podcasts, actors Linda Sokhulu and Dumisani Mbebe addressed social media influencers' infiltration of the acting space because of their strong social media presence. 'Influencer category, I don't even know who did the research because for some reason they are actually associating the number of followers that one has with viewership,' Mbebe told broadcaster David Mashabela on the latter's podcast, King David Studio. In their conversation about the industry, Mashabela and Mbebe discussed the quality and quantity of television work, where Mbebe said social influencers have become a category in the television world. 'Now there's such as ugly trend where they will ask you how many followers do you have on Instagram, how many followers do you have on Twitter… all these social platforms and you ask yourself, 'what's that got to do with my talent?'' Mbebe said. 'Why do you think some guys get a lot of work, some guys are not good at what they do. All they do is just go to gym, look beautiful and they will make them shoot in like, you know, tight t-shirts or whatever,' said Mbebe. ALSO READ: 'I am appalled by the recent so-called apology issued' — Nonn Botha on Open Chats Podcast Two different jobs Echoing Mbebe, Sokhulu said there have been times when she looks up an actor whose craft she respects and will notice that they have fewer followers than a particular influencer. 'And that's not to say that the influencer, based on influencing work, should not have the followers that they have… and that's not to say that actors shouldn't have the followers that they have. For me, it says that it's two different jobs,' said Sokhulu, speaking on Relebogile Mabotja's yet-to-be-released podcast. Sokhulu added that because being an influencer and being an actor are two different jobs, the former is blending into the latter's career. I am so grateful for the opportunity to sit down with the incredible Linda Sokhulu, an actress who brings such depth and authenticity to every character she portrays. We explored the craft of acting, navigating vulnerable moments on screen, and the pressures actors face in… — Relebogile Mabotja (@RelebogileM) August 7, 2025 'That's why I don't necessarily understand it because when I'm quietly in my house, sitting there and looking at lines and trying to be earnestly focusing on what a character's needs are, or it's half past one and I'm like 'I got it!' that's what it is,' said Sokhulu sharing an idea of some of the things trained performers go through to prepare for a role. 'I'm constantly playing out in my head what my craft is asking of me. And then social media says that my relevance be 'X' number and there's a person who's got a different tier by 15 000 upper tier… it's two different things that have now somehow been forced and been made to look like one.' Mbebe said the influence of social media has led to 'pretty' television. Mbebe noted that to be an actor, one has to be ugly. 'It means it's not about you. It's not about 'Dumisani' it's about the character. If you have to be ugly in that specific scene, you gotta be ugly in that specific scene.' Reality TV star Mikayla Matthews sparks backlash over risky 'stiletto challenge' with newborn

"Mormon Wives" star Mikayla Matthews has come under fire online after posting a video of her attempting Nicki Minaj's viral "stiletto challenge". The trend is inspired by a pose the rapper does in the music video for her 2013 song "High School", featuring Lil Wayne. After the pose resurfaced, in just a matter of weeks, more than 100k people have jumped on the gravity-defying stunt, wearing stilettos and balancing on objects with one foot. In the video posted on her Instagram, Matthews is seen attempting the challenge, but that's not what angered media users. It was the fact that Matthews included her 2-week-old baby in it. Matthews is seen attempting to balance on one leg atop a step stool in her stilettos, all the while holding her baby in one arm along with a stack of diapers in the other. Her light-hearted caption read: "How it feels balancing postpartum + 4 kids and being the breadwinner 👀✨," along with a note on her exhaustion only two weeks post-partum: "2 weeks postpartum yesterday and we are a whole new level of TIRED lol😅🙃." While Matthews might have thought that this was a comical take on motherhood, netizens have expressed outrage over the apparent recklessness she displayed just to keep up with an online trend. One user commented: "Why does everyone think this is ok … If she fell her newborn would be seriously hurt ... Bizarre behaviour just for the clicks." Another sarcastic comment highlighted the absurdity: "I love that you are using a newborn as a prop to flex multitasking as a new mom. It's so mature and safe. I hope you get a lot of clicks for your creativity! "I'm sure you've got the best health insurance possible in case your baby gets squished or tossed if you fell sideways or blacked out suddenly ... You are a beautiful example to mothers everywhere." A third said, "Don't you care for your baby's safety? She's two weeks old, for G-ds sake. You are more concerned about a trend and likes than your baby. Outrageous!🤬🤬🤬." Worsening the situation further was the fact that Matthews's co-stars from "Mormon Wives", such as Taylor Frankie Paul, Mayci Neeley and Jessi Ngatikaura, praised her bold take on juggling motherhood and work. While this trend has recently taken TikTok by storm, with users practising their balancing skills on all sorts of objects, it has caused quite a few mishaps. Most recently, Mariana Barutkina, a 32-year-old mommy blogger from Russia, became an unexpected cautionary tale. Just weeks after giving birth, she attempted the challenge, balancing in stilettos on a pot and a canister of baby formula atop her kitchen counter. The result? The pot slipped, Barutkina toppled backwards, and, suddenly, a fun video turned into a worrying trip to the ER. Barutkina was diagnosed with a T9 compression fracture, a break in the ninth thoracic vertebra of her spine.

Image: Instagram She added that even though she is thankful that the growth is treatable and doctors managed to detect it early, it breaks her heart that this means she has to pause on her future appearances or anything work-related, including a scheduled interview with Michelle Obama. 'Because of this, I have to step back from some upcoming appearances, including Mrs Obama's podcast taping at Martha's Vineyard this weekend. And that honestly breaks my heart. I don't take lightly what it means to show up for y'all,' she wrote. Even though she is taking a break from working to recover, the 34-year-old also shared and assured her fans that she has not moved the date up for her fourth studio album 'Escape Room', which is expected to be released on August 22. 'I've poured so much of myself into this next chapter - especially the 'Escape Room'. Which is still dropping on August 22! So no worries there. 'It's the most personal body of work I've ever created, and the timing, it's not lost on me. Just as I was getting ready to finally share this with you, life handed me my own unexpected 'Escape Room' – one I didn't ask for,' Taylor added. The mother of two has been excitedly sharing sneak peeks of the visual album and promoting her upcoming album on her social media pages, which has continuously built anticipation among her fans.
