Merdeka 118 featured in Marvel's Thunderbolts film
It is the first time that the 678.9-metre-tall skyscraper, owned by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) through its subsidiary PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd, was selected a location for a Hollywood film, a fact that many Malaysians were so proud of that they left comments like - Malaysia shining bright, Malaysia goes global, and the signature cry - Malaysia Boleh! - on various social media platforms.
Marvel Studios had set the ball rolling when it previously shared behind-the-scenes footage of Thunderbolts star Florence Pugh jumping from the top of Merdeka 118, which unsurprisingly captured the attention of fans, especially those from Malaysia.
And the feel-good feeling has just gotten stronger since yesterday's premiere, judging by the comments left by Malaysians on various social media platforms, including one by ApiZ on Tiktok, who posted, 'Feel proud that Malaysia's name is part of an international movie.'
Perhaps what most Malaysians felt could be best summed up by fellow Malaysian Saiful Nizam's simple direct comment - I'm proud to be Malaysian.
Local film reviewer Shahril Izzat Rosli, who goes by the moniker Shahril Pencinta Muvee, echoed such sentiments when he spoke to Bernama, and expressed his pride in seeing the country's landmark featured in an international movie, something he said showcased Malaysia at the world stage.
'Obviously, I was very excited and proud when I saw our national landmark make its appearance in a Hollywood movie, what more a Marvel film that has its own following throughout the world.
'It wasn't just once, but Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur were mentioned repeatedly throughout the film, so that's certainly something to be proud of,' he said.
He pointed out that Marvel film fans who have not heard of Malaysia would indirectly know of it, what with an anti-hero character being created in a lab in the country, according to the film.

Negaraku II Explores Malaysia's Story Through Art In George Town
By Siti Azila Alias GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- As Malaysians proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang ahead of the National Day, the spirit of patriotism, unity and hope for the future is also finding its voice through art. A year after unveiling negaraku, an exhibition honouring the nation's journey from independence to its future possibilites, art collector Bingley Sim and his wife Ima Norbinsha return with negaraku II, a more expansive sequel that goes deeper into the complexities of Malaysian identity. Running throughout the month (until Aug 31) at Hin Bus Depot, Jalan Gurdwara here, negaraku II showcases compelling works from the private collection of Sim, 62, and Ima, 63, two passionate champions of socially conscious Malaysian contemporary art. Curated by Ivan Gabriel, the exhibition features 35 works from the couple's private collection, with some presented as thematic sets, bringing the total number of individual pieces to about 60, divided into six chapters. In an interview with Bernama, Sim explained that the first chapter titled 'Pejuang-Pejuang' (Warriors), begins with a 1511 masterpiece by Edroger Rosili depicting the Portuguese arrival, a reminder of a history Malaysians must not forget, as their ancestors lived under colonial rule for centuries. He said the second chapter 'Malaysia, Truly Asia' takes inspiration from the well-known tourism slogan, highlighting the country's rich cultural diversity while also addressing the underlying challenges that coexist with its beauty. 'Third chapter 'Pendatang?' (Immigrants?) is quite core in this show because this is something very close to curator Ivan. It explores the migrant roots of many Malaysians, in fact, many of our parents or grandparents, in my case, were actually a migrant and became an immigrant from China,' he said. In Chapter 4 titled 'Sama-sama' (Together), Sim pointed out that it celebrates Malaysia's food culture as a unifying bridge between communities, while highlighting historical connections beyond popular eateries.

Dr Sam moved as Malaysians of all races sing 'Saya Anak Malaysia'
KUALA LUMPUR: The patriotic song "Saya Anak Malaysia" continues to resonate across generations, with Malaysians of all races embracing it as a symbol of national pride and love for their country. Its singer, Salim Ibrahim, 72, better known as Dr Sam, said he was deeply moved to see Malaysians from diverse backgrounds passionately singing the song whenever it is played. "Thanks to Allah. It touches me to see not only Malays, but also Chinese and Indians singing this song together," he said emotionally. He recalled how, in the past, his housing area would resonate with the chant of Saya Anak Malaysia when the local Chinese community paraded on Aug 31, singing the song. Dr Sam was a guest performer at the launch of National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, officiated by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu today. He admitted that he became emotional when he heard schoolchildren, youth, and university students singing the song, even if they had never met him. "Although the song is 39 years old, people still sing it. Even the children sing along… during the performance today, the IPG students joined in, and I felt deeply moved," he said, admitting he nearly shed tears. Dr Sam said he never imagined that the song, composed by renowned musician Datuk M. Nasir with lyrics by S. Amin Shahab in 1986, would endure as a patriotic emblem for Malaysians. One of his fondest memories was its first performance at the Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Auditorium, where the hall resounded with enthusiastic singing on the eve of National Day. "The entire hall echoed… I will never forget that moment," he said with a smile. He added that the song's enduring appeal lies in its simple melody and memorable lyrics, which resonate with Malaysians of all ages and races. "When people hear this song, everyone feels like part of one big family called Malaysia. That is what makes me proud," he said.
