‘We take pride in surprising customers.' Publix rolls out a new soft Pub Sub roll

Miami Herald15-02-2025
Publix is embracing its softer side with the recent addition to its Pub Sub lineup.
A new soft white bread roll can serve as a pillow for your fillings — whether it's the supermarket's most popular sub, with chicken tenders, or old standbys like tuna or Boar's Head ham and cheese.
The new soft white bread option made its debut in the deli counter section at Publix stores in its homestate Florida and seven other southeastern states in mid-February, joining regulars including the Italian 5 Grain, whole wheat and white rolls, and the various wraps.
Publix wouldn't exactly say they were responding to some of the snarkier comments on a recent Reddit titled 'Soft Bread at Publix? Yes!!!' — but one comment seemed representative of a particular point of view.
'This is a game changer for me,' wrote a Reddit user with the screen name BadCaseofClams. 'I hate our regular sub rolls. They're dry and crumbly and just not my thing. Got an Italian with this today. I could bite it without cutting the roof of my mouth and shooting bread shrapnel out in every direction. Already a win, but the light sweetness also tastes really nice with the salty Italian meats and tart toppings.'
Publix spokeswoman Nicole Krauss told the Miami Herald on Friday: 'We're always listening to our customers and following the latest trends. And as we continue to grow our signature sub offerings, the new soft sub roll is just another option for our customers to experience and enjoy.'
We tried the soft white roll with tuna and the week's Publix cheese special — smoked gouda. Toasted, please. Like biting into a cloud but we festooned our Pub Sub with raw onions, lettuce and black olives for some texture and crunch. The new fresh-baked bread was sweet, almost like Hawaiian bread.
We kind of agree with Ben aka SashaIsMySpiritAnima on Reddit who posted, 'It was soft and pillowy on the inside and nice and crispy without killing my mouth on the inside' and had to chuckle a bit at another who apparently doesn't mind the coarser variety. 'I kind of like the hard a-- bread at Publix. But will try the soft one to see if I like it more.'
The new soft white is baked in-store and will be available year-round at Publix.
'We take pride in surprising customers with new products and offerings alongside the favorites they've come to know and love,' Krauss said.

Bride ‘livid' after shocking wedding cake fail nearly ruins her big day

A bride was left horrified after she ordered her wedding cake from a bakery and received something far from what she had requested. Sharing her experience on the Reddit Wedding Shaming forum, the woman said the bakery made matters worse by refusing to refund the cake, which was clearly the wrong color. 'I'm livid. We pick up our cake ON my wedding day and the color is so off,' she said. 'We asked for a shade of dusty blue and sent two references for the color. It's so ugly.' 5 She then posted photos comparing her inspiration images with what she actually received. Reddit/IndicationInner7023 She then posted photos comparing her inspiration images with what she actually received, highlighting the many issues, including the color mismatch. Not only was the cake a much darker shade of blue, but elements from the ethereal inspiration photo, like being covered in dainty flowers, were missing. Instead, just four randomly placed single flowers adorned the cake. Fortunately, the bride's sister stepped in at the last minute to 'save' the cake, with the bride confirming she did an 'amazing job'. 5 'I'm livid. We pick up our cake ON my wedding day and the color is so off,' she said. Reddit/IndicationInner7023 She lightened the icing, added white draping, and placed a 'Mr and Mrs' cake topper on top. She also included more delicate-looking flowers to better match the original brief. Despite getting close to her dream cake in the end, the bride still wanted a refund from the bakery, but they refused. 'The lady on the phone was so rude and condescending,' the poster claimed. 'She told us to take pictures of the cake next to our wedding decor so she could make sure 'it ACTUALLY didn't match'. 'Well, we took pics alright. The first two photos are our reference images. I'll let you guess which picture after that was the 'before' from the bakery and which was the one my sister fixed.' 5 Despite getting close to her dream cake in the end, the bride still wanted a refund from the bakery, but they refused. WavebreakMediaMicro – Reddit users quickly sympathized with the bride. 'That dusty blue in the inspo is SO beautiful I'm so sorry they didn't deliver for you. Props to your sister,' said one user. 'Yeah, she's a miracle worker,' added a second. Some others, less impressed, believed the bakery's cake was actually better than what the sister made, even though it was the wrong color. 5 Fortunately, the bride's sister stepped in at the last minute to 'save' the cake, with the bride confirming she did an 'amazing job'. Reddit/IndicationInner7023 'She draped fabric on the cake???' one commenter asked. 'I've never been to a wedding where it looks like the cake is getting married,' quipped another. 'This is a super weird fix. I get the color was off, and OP should get a discount, but it's otherwise a nice cake. The fixed cake looks a mess and the fabric is a head-scratcher,' wrote another user. 5 Some others, less impressed, believed the bakery's cake was actually better than what the sister made. Reddit/IndicationInner7023 'I'm sorry, but that's just horrendous. The weird, glopped-on frosting and all those flowers are just bad,' someone else added. According to Easy Weddings' 2025 Australian Wedding Industry Report, couples now spend an average of $650 ($419 USD) on their wedding cake, a seven% rise from 2024. Meanwhile, one of the top five stressors for couples planning a wedding is 'finding reliable suppliers'.

A British hiker needed rescuing from the Italian Dolomites. He's now facing a $16,000 fine

A British hiker who had to be airlifted to safety after he ignored signs and crossed warning barriers in the Italian Dolomites is paying a high price for his rescue. The 60-year-old, whose name has not been made public, was given a bill for €14,225 ($16,400) to pay for the use of two rescue helicopters and more than a dozen specialized rescuers and support staff when he needed help on Thursday, according to the Veneto Alpine and Speleological Rescue (CNSAS). A week earlier, two Belgian hikers in the same area were handed a far smaller bill for their rescue because they are European Union citizens. The United Kingdom left the EU in 2020. More than 80 people died hiking the Italian Alps and Dolomites between June 21 and July 23, according to the CNSAS, making it the deadliest hiking season this century. Five people remain unaccounted for. Rescue calls have also risen by 20% over last year, which led to the closure of some of the most treacherous routes around Cortina and San Vito di Cadore, where the British hiker was rescued, Maurizio Dellantonio, chief of CNSAS, said at the weekend. 'A 60-year-old English hiker, who had set out that morning from Passo Tre Croci, called to say he was on the Berti via ferrata and that rocks were falling from above,' the CNSAS warned on its social media on Thursday evening, noting that the man did not have equipment to give his precise coordinates. 'Once he had reconstructed his theoretical position, he was told not to move from his sheltered spot and to wait for help to arrive, as the mountain was currently hidden by clouds. To decide on the recovery strategy, the hiker's exact position was needed, so they had to wait for the clouds to clear. When the clouds cleared, the San Vito di Cadore Alpine Rescue team unfortunately discovered that the hiker was right in the center of the landslide, at an altitude of 2,400 meters (nearly 7,900 feet).' After the rescue, first responders with the CNSAS working with Italy's Civil Protection decided to close more trails. 'The operation was made necessary due to hikers neglecting existing signage, which was evidently insufficient to stop people, either due to inattention or an underestimation of the risk,' CNSAS said in a Facebook post. The post shows images of existing signage that clearly says 'closed' in English, Italian and German. 'This measure is intended to protect the safety of those in transit, as well as the rescuers themselves, both the helicopter rescue crews and the teams on foot,' the post continued. Dellantonio said the man passed at least four signs and had to crawl around a barrier and was urged by other hikers at the signposts to turn around and head back with them. The dangerous and deadly conditions across the European Alps this year is blamed on extreme weather, with unpredicted storms sweeping through causing landslides, flash flooding and blizzard-like conditions. Some of the recent rescued people have been hospitalized for hypothermia. Local authorities are warning people to be prepared if they do travel to the area to climb. 'What happened (with the British hiker) warrants some reflection,' Giuseppe Dal Ben, the commissioner of the Ulss 1 health authority in the Dolomites, told reporters at the weekend. 'Helicopters are essential for time-sensitive operations in harsh environments. Precisely for this reason, it is important that they are not used as taxis, endangering not only those who are providing the assistance but those who actually need it.'

Ancient ‘fairy houses' — still filled with treasures — found in Italy. See them

In the rocky landscape of Sardinia, Italy, sat a trio of ancient 'fairy houses.' Archaeologists had spent almost 200 years excavating and studying the area, but these small, underground structures went overlooked — until now. A team of archaeologists began work at the Necropolis of Saint Andrea Priu, a site on Sardinia island with a mixture of ruins from prehistoric times until the Early Middle Ages, as part of an ongoing project to excavate, restore and generally improve the complex, the Regional Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture for Sardinia said in a July 29 news release. While working on a rocky plateau, archaeologists noticed something in between two exposed tombs. Something about the landscape suggested it might hide an unexplored structure, officials said. Archaeologists began digging, and what reemerged surpassed their expectations: They found three domus de janas. 'Legend has it that the Janas were small fairies who lived in tiny houses carved into the rock, called Domus de Janas, or fairy houses,' according to the Italian Ministry of Tourism. 'Some say that fairies used to spend their time weaving on their magnificent golden looms and watching over the children's sleep. Some say they lavished their riches on those who deserved it, there are those who swear they saw them in person playing or fighting with other fantastic creatures such as elves and goblins.' In reality, domus de janas are small 'rock-cut tombs' carved between 5,000 and 7,000 years ago 'that reflect the funerary practices, spiritual beliefs, and social evolution of Sardinia's prehistoric communities,' according to UNESCO World Heritage Convention. These underground burials 'feature complex layouts, symbolic decorations, and figurative motifs.' Archaeologists named the three newly uncovered 'fairy houses' Tomb XVIII, XIX and XX, officials said. The exact size of the tombs was not provided but, based on photos from the excavation, the structures are roughly child-sized. Tomb XVIII has a corridor-like entrance leading to a rectangular chamber with a hearth, depicted as two concentric circles, archaeologists said. The rectangular chamber connects to two more chambers. Around the tomb entrance, excavations found pickaxes, obsidian fragments and a spindle. Tomb XIX is the smallest of the three domus de janas, officials said. It has an external pavilion structure, a central rectangular chamber and a secondary rounded chamber. Inside, archaeologists found a miniature vase and other pottery. Tomb XX is the most complex of the three and has seven chambers, archaeologists said. One chamber still had some decorative paint, while the others had over 30 Roman-era artifacts such as jugs, plates and lamps. Officials shared photos of these ancient Roman-era artifacts in a July 28 Facebook post. Archaeologists did not provide exact ages for the newly uncovered 'fairy houses' but said these types of structures are generally prehistoric and over 5,000 years old. Tombs XVIII, XIX and XX are already accessible to visitors at the Necropolis of Saint Andrea Priu, and other excavation work is ongoing, officials said. The Necropolis of Saint Andrea Priu is in central Sardinia, an island off the western coast of Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea.
