Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese said that the experience of watching films in theatres has changed for the worse.
The movie industry has been facing a crisis of sorts, with theatres struggling to attract audiences. Streaming platforms, high ticket prices, lack of originality, and distracted viewers have turned movie-watching into a passive, background activity. One might assume that filmmakers would stand firm in support of theatres. However, Martin Scorsese — the visionary behind Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Irishman — has quietly distanced himself from this idea. It's not that he's lost faith in cinema, but rather that he believes the experience of watching films in cinemas has changed for the worse.
In a recent open chat with his longtime friend and film critic Peter Travers, the Oscar-winning director shared why he no longer enjoys going to the movies in public. Travers recalled how Scorsese had vented his frustration over modern audiences—people constantly on their phones, getting up to buy snacks and oversized sodas, and making so much noise it drowns out the dialogue.
Teasing the director, Travers added, 'Come on, Marty, we weren't exactly quiet in our youth either." Scorsese's tone turned serious. 'Maybe," he admitted, 'but when we talked, it was always about the movie—we were caught up in the magic of it."
To escape the noise and crowds, Martin Scorsese has reportedly crafted a private screening room equipped with top-tier audio-visual gear, surrounded by vintage movie posters, shelves of rare memorabilia, and an archive of classics he frequently revisits. For Scorsese, this sanctuary isn't just about comfort — it's about preserving the purity of the viewing experience.
Coming to Scorcese' work commitments, the director is set to reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio for his new project. The duo have worked together in several movies like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Aviator, The Departed, Gangs of New York, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
The film will also feature Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, Deadline reported. The untitled drama is centred around an aspiring mob boss' battle with rival crime factions to control organised crime in Hawaii.
