John Gosden out to snap 35-year wait for first Guineas win with hot favourite Field Of Gold

The Irish Sun01-05-2025

JOHN GOSDEN is hoping to finally end his Betfred 2,000 Guineas hoodoo with red-hot favourite Field Of Gold.
The galloping grey shot to the head of the betting for the season's first Classic with an impressive win in the Craven Stakes last month.

Six-time champion trainer Gosden, 74, has been trying to win the big one at Newmarket since 1990 when his first runner, Anshan, was third.
But it is still the one race missing from his glittering CV, with Kingman's last-gasp defeat at the hands of Night Of Thunder in 2014 the closest he's come.
But Gosden, who now shares the training licence at Clarehaven Stables with his 30-year-old son Thady, insists it's not playing on his mind.
He said: 'It has never weighed on my mind. It seems to be glaring to everyone else but not to me!
"It's nice to have a horse who at the moment is favourite, but it doesn't mean that you're going to win it.
'I'm enjoying it. It's nice to have a horse of his quality. He's developed well from two to three, he's got a lot of scope about him and he's probably a horse who'll be able to go further in time, there's no doubt about that.
'We've got some nice horses this year and when you have horses that are running in these races it makes it a lot easier to get out of bed in the morning.'
Field Of Gold is a general 7-4 jolly for the Guineas with the bookies, and his position at the head of the market strengthened when chief rival, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Twain, was ruled out.

Gosden continued: 'I think you have to look at the fact that they probably over-raced a little bit in the Craven.
"Fresh horses in front and they went very hard and therefore he was probably in the perfect position to come from at the back and go past them.
'Having said that the race set up nicely and he finished very strongly. He's been training nicely this year.
"I expected him to run a good race but we didn't expect him necessarily to win like that. But on the other hand, I think you'll find the early fractions were pretty strong.
'It'll be a smaller field on Saturday and I think they'll presumably go a good mile pace for a Group 1. I'd expect that.
'I think he was 85 per cent fit in the Craven and there's no doubt that that first race just tightened and sharpened him.
'He's probably quite like his father, Kingman, but his father was a different 'make' of horse, a powerful bull of a horse but very relaxed and Kingman's favourite habit was eating and sleeping.
'I think he's a horse who will probably be comfortable in a race like the Eclipse in future if we ever got there at that time. I think a mile and a quarter would be something well within his comfort.
"But Saturday is a big day, so let's get that out of the way first."

Palace co-owner John Textor would sell shares for Europa League chance

Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor is willing to sell his shares in the club in order to ensure the Eagles can enter next season's Europa League, according to reports. The American, whose Eagle Football Group owns 43 per cent of Palace, has imperilled the club's chance of a first-ever European campaign owing to his involvement with Ligue 1 side Lyon, but is ready to offload his stake to his fellow co-owners in order to bring the saga to an end. UEFA does not allow clubs with the same ownership to compete in the same European competitions in a season. Eberechi Eze scored the winning goal when Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final (Adam Davy/PA) As well as his stake in Palace, the 59-year-old has a controlling stake in the French club, also via Eagle Football. However it is also reported that the European governing body does not consider Textor's influence at Selhurst Park to be decisive and is leaning towards allowing the club into the Europa League regardless. The PA news agency understands no formal decision is likely on Palace's fate until the end of June. Textor has previously spoken of his frustration at how little influence his stake entitles him to, over football matters. Victory for Oliver Glasner's side over Manchester City in last month's FA Cup final gave them their first major trophy and with it a first crack at Europe. Nottingham Forest – who are owned by Evangelos Marinakis – have written to UEFA challenging Palace's involvement in the Europa League (Mike Egerton/PA) However, Nottingham Forest have since written to UEFA to challenge Palace's Europa League spot and in the hope of taking their place. Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Greek side Olympiacos, placed his shares in the club in a blind trust before the governing body's March 1 deadline, anticipating Nuno Espirito Santo's side's European qualification. At present Forest, who finished seventh in last season's Premier League, are set to enter the Conference League but would take Palace's Europa League place, should they be deemed ineligible.

Keane eager for flying Ascot start in new Juddmonte role

Colin Keane is known as 'baby Mick Kinane' to some of those closest to him and hopes to prove just as deadly as the great Irish rider at Royal Ascot, with excitement building ahead of a key week in his new role at Juddmonte. The six-time Irish champion jockey was named retained rider to the leading owners earlier in the week and can look forward to a stellar book of mounts as he dives straight in at the deep end for his new employers at one of the year's most important meetings. Keane is embracing the challenge as he pays thanks to the role long-time ally Ger Lyons — one of the men who gave Keane his 'baby Mick' moniker — has played in his rise to becoming the weighing room's most wanted man. "If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be on the stage I've got to. I was with him from when I was an apprentice, I went straight there from my father's and he has backed me 100%," said Keane. "I wouldn't be where I am without him. It was a pretty straightforward decision (to take the Juddmonte job) and once I had a chat with Ger and he was happy enough, we were all happy. "I think Pat (Healy, racing photographer) and Ger came up with 'baby Mick' and it's not a bad nickname to have. But we try to keep it as relaxed as possible and get the job done. "Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of our sport. It's the place where everyone wants to go — owners, trainers, and jockeys — and so I'm very fortunate to have some nice rides to look forward to next week." Keane is the first jockey since James Doyle to be committed to Juddmonte, joining the likes of Pat Eddery and Richard Hughes amongst those who have donned the famous pink, white, and green silks on a regular basis for the Abdullah family's operation. It is not just decorated names in the saddle that are inextricably linked with Juddmonte but also some of the finest racehorses of all time, with the 30-year-old well aware of the history of his new role. Keane added: "It was a 'pinch yourself' moment when the call came and I had to double check that it was actually Barry Mahon (Juddmonte's European racing manager) on the other end of the phone! "When you get opportunities like this, you have to take them and we could be talking here for a while now about the horses that have come and gone in these colours. Hopefully there will be more to come. "I'll be coming over whenever I am told and finding things out. I'll be talking to Barry Mahon and he'll be telling me where I need to go. I'll go over and back from Ireland and maybe having the odd day in France. I'll be kept busy, that's for sure." First up for Keane will be his Ascot baptism of fire where his new associations will be put to the test on the grandest stage of racing. However, the Irishman is content to ride the waves of his brief honeymoon period ahead of a week in the spotlight in Berkshire, where Field Of Gold could prove the ace in his swelling pack as he looks to add to his two previous triumphs at the Royal meeting. "I won't be able to tell you what the pressure is like until next week and we'll take it as it comes," Keane added. "I've a nice book of rides and the hardest problem is often getting on these horses, so it's a nice problem to have. You just have to take your chances. "You are riding these horses for brilliant trainers and they will guide you the best way possible and you will have done your homework for sure. You're more looking forward to it than anything."
