Nagpur: The Muslim community, especially the Shia sect, observed Ashura with remembrance of Imam Hussain's martyrdom in distinct ways in the city on Sunday. The Shia community led the rituals with matam (mourning) and self-flagellation, such as chest beating, slapping, and wailing during huge rallies from Haidry Masjid in Mominpura to Karbala Masjid in Imambada and Kamptee's Hussainabad to Kanhan.
The community later participated in majlees-e-shyame gareeba, followed by a feast in the evening. Naushad Ali Haidry, president of Shia Jamaat Trust, said over 2,000 community members participated in the mournings in Nagpur.
The Sunni sect observed roza (fast) and distributed sherbet and khichadi on roadsides to all. Some members called for looking at different virtues of Imam Hussain to seek justice and peace and recalled other significances of the day.
Islamic scholar Majid Parekh said, "Though the month is sacred and war is forbidden, Hussain was mercilessly killed for refusing to accept an unjust ruler. His stand was not for power, but for truth, justice, and the peaceful values taught by his grandfather Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), who was such a peacemaker the known human history ever witnessed.
He united warring tribes and established Madinah as a model of pluralism, promoting personal laws and peaceful coexistence."
Parekh added, "Imam Hussain upheld this legacy by choosing sacrifice over submission. His life reminds us that true leadership stands for justice, compassion, and unity. In a world torn by conflict, we must learn from his example and commit ourselves to peace. Today, the world is desperately in need of peace and harmony. Innocent victims are weeping in silence, gasping for the comfort of calm. Wars and violence only lead to pain, injustice, and hatred in society.
While we mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), we must also reflect on ourselves and ask: why is the world still struggling for peace?"
Hamed Bin Khalid Quraishi, secretary, Centre for Social Research and Empowerment (CSRE), said Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, holds profound significance in Islamic history, particularly due to Imam Hussain's martyrdom in 680 CE, symbolising resistance against oppression. "Pre-Islam, Arabs and Jews fasted on this day, commemorating divine events like Moses' escape and Noah's Ark resting. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged fasting on Ashura, later made optional after Ramadan.
For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning, honouring Hussain's sacrifice for justice," he said.

Govt to roll out 90-day programme to improve burial ground facilities in Mumbai
Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant on Monday informed the state Assembly that the government will roll out a 90-day programme aimed at improving burial ground facilities across Mumbai. The announcement followed a calling attention motion raised by BJP MLA Manisha Chaudhari regarding the condition of the Kandarpada burial ground in Dahisar. Samant said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been instructed to survey plots reserved for burial grounds under the city's Development Plan (DP). Chaudhari also flagged public health concerns stemming from the absence of a disinfection mechanism at the burial grounds. 'Based on the survey findings and local requirements, these reserved plots will be developed accordingly. Within 90 days, we will finalise the reservations and allocate funds,' Samant said. Currently, the BMC manages 10 burial grounds for Christians, while 42 are under private management. For the Muslim community, the civic body manages 17 burial grounds, and 67 are privately managed. Samant further stated that a dedicated committee will be constituted to draft a comprehensive framework for cremation and burial services across urban local bodies. 'The framework will consider population growth, urban expansion, and land availability. All processes will align with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines,' he added. Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh and Samajwadi Party's Raees Shaikh also pointed out the need to expedite the decomposition process for buried bodies. Responding to this, Samant acknowledged that burials continue to follow traditional practices, without any disinfection procedures in place.

Beyond Political Divide: When BJP, Congress leaders shared stage to award Tazia makers
On Sunday, two senior leaders, one each from the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, attended a Tazia procession being carried out by the Muslim community members on the occasion of Muharram in Surat. During the procession, Gujarat BJP Chief and Union Minister for Jal Shakti C R Paatil attended the procession with Mayor Daxesh Mavani, City BJP President Paresh Patel, and the party's municipal corporators, among others. Tazias with best designs were handed out trophies by Paatil. Former Surat Mayor and senior Congress leader Kadir Pirzada shared the stage with Paatil as the latter recalled instances from the past such as allotment of a piece of land for installing a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj when Pirzada was the Surat mayor or when, following their joint efforts, two public events — celebration of the birth anniversary of the Maratha warrior king and Tazia processions — were held peacefully in Limbayat area of the city. Meanwhile, a former Congress MLA of Savarkundla in Amreli district attended a Tazia procession, a video of which went viral on social media. Speaking to The Indian Express, Dudhat said, 'As a public leader and someone belonging to a party that follows secularism, I participate in both Tazia procession as well as festivals of other religions every year. The video which went viral is of Limdi Chowk, in Savarkundla town of Amreli district, on Sunday afternoon. As a public leader, I got an invitation and not only did I remain present, I also participated in the rituals. During Hindu festivals, the Muslims also took an active part, giving water and soft drinks to the people participating in the Hindu procession.' He further said, 'It is a norm in villages in Gujarat where both Hindus and Muslims participate in each other's religious activities. I have done nothing new.'
