Trade Desk tumbles after CEO warns of tariff impact on large brand advertisers

Mint2 days ago
Aug 8 (Reuters) - Shares of cloud-based ad tech firm Trade Desk fell by a third during premarket trading on Friday, after CEO Jeff Green warned about ongoing tariff uncertainty pressuring some of the world's largest advertisers.
Trade Desk's stock move looked set to wipe out over $12 billion from the company's market valuation, if losses hold.
Changing trade policies have led to concerns about soft ad spending as companies are holding back on launching new campaigns, particularly in sectors directly affected by tariffs.
Trade Desk, which specializes in helping advertisers buy and optimize digital ad campaigns, has concentrated on large global advertisers.
This focus has made the company more vulnerable to wider economic pressures, in contrast to competitors who rely more on small and medium-sized businesses, Green said on Thursday.
"In an unusual development, TTD decelerated and grew slower than Meta's 22%, which marked an acceleration, prompting worries that closed gardens are growing faster than the open Internet," said Rosenblatt Securities analyst Barton Crockett.
"TTD is also meaningfully exposed to large brands, which are facing tariff pressures."
The company expects the current quarter's revenue to be at least $717 million, largely in line with expectations from analysts compiled by LSEG.
At least seven analysts lowered their price targets on the stock following the results, bringing the median target to $84, as per data compiled by LSEG.
Trade Desk on Thursday also named Alex Kayyal as its chief financial officer, effective August 21, succeeding Laura Schenkein. (Reporting by Harshita Mary Varghese in Bengaluru; Editing by Shreya Biswas)

Kerala aims to become Carbon neutral by 2050: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (UNI) Kerala aims to become carbon neutral by 2050, and the Green Budget 2025 of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, introduced as part of sustainable development initiatives, is a major step towards achieving this goal, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 'Thiruvananthapuram has become the first city in Kerala to implement a Green Budget. The budget outlines activities in the city aimed at limiting carbon emissions, serving as a model for other local bodies,' the CM said. He was speaking after inaugurating the seed ball manufacturing project implemented by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and launching the Green Budget 2025 at Putharikandam Maidan yesterday. The Chief Minister said discussions on climate change and natural disasters are taking place across the world. However, there is still no global consensus on combating climate change. 'Even at the UN Climate Change Conference, no clear guidelines were formulated. Instead of waiting for such global agreements, we are moving ahead with our own actions,' he added. He stated that incentives are being provided for electric vehicles, along with the promotion of green hydrogen hubs and renewable energy sources. The Corporation's work to make Thiruvananthapuram a solar city is commendable. As part of this, solar panels are being installed on government office buildings at a cost of ₹125 crore. Electric buses are being purchased, and the Corporation has procured and distributed 100 electric autorickshaws. Such initiatives will help Thiruvananthapuram become one of the fastest-developing cities, he said. The seed ball campaign had planned to involve 6,000 students, but an additional 1,000 students joined. The seed balls they prepared will be planted in office premises and barren lands under the 'Green Trivandrum' concept. By depositing four lakh seed balls across various parts of the city, large-scale tree growth can be encouraged. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that such activities to tackle environmental challenges would also help create significant eco-friendly awareness. UNI DS RKM

China's SMIC says Trump tariffs did not cause expected 'hard landing'

By Che Pan and Joe Cash BEIJING: China 's top foundry SMIC said on Friday U.S. tariff policy had not led to a "hard landing" the company had initially feared and strong domestic demand would keep its production capacity tight until October. Co-CEO Zhao Haijun told a post-earnings call the company was not consulting with customers on U.S. President Donald Trump's 100% tariff plan for chip imports but expected smaller impact, thanks to contingency plans made after the April tariffs. "After these past few months, everyone has either stocked up enough inventory for this year and next year, or found other suppliers," Zhao said, "So I think the impact will become even smaller." Previous tariff rounds had led to cost increases of less than 10% for overseas customers, he added. China raised additional duties on U.S. goods to 125% in April after Trump effectively raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%. On Wednesday Trump vowed a tariff of about 100% on imports of semiconductors, but excluded companies manufacturing in the U.S. or which have committed to do so. SMIC, which does not have manufacturing in the United States, was blacklisted by the U.S. commerce department in 2020. China is its dominant market, contributing 84% of second- quarter revenue, flat with the first, while the U.S. made up 12.9%, up slightly from 12.6%. SMIC's second-quarter revenue rose 16.2% on the year to $2.2 billion. Its profit attributable to owners declined 19.5% to $132.5 million, missing analysts' estimates of $183.35 million, according to LSEG data. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), as it is formally known, shipped 2.4 million eight-inch equivalent wafers in the second quarter, up 4.3% from the previous quarter. Zhao said its production capacity remained insufficient and would stay tight until October due to robust demand from domestic substitution for analog chips, WiFi and ethernet chips and controller chips for memory. SMIC's monthly production capacity expanded by 1.85% quarter-on-quarter to 991,000 wafers, with utilisation rates rising to 92.5% from 89.6% in the March quarter. But Zhao said the fourth quarter is usually a slow season for the industry and rush orders and early shipments would slow then. SMIC expects third-quarter revenue to increase by 5% to 7% from the second. SMIC's Hong Kong-traded shares were down more than 5% on Friday.
