'Is your filmmaker mother disappointed?': Zohran Mamdani shares Mira Nair's take on his videos
Indian-origin Democrat Zohran Mamdani has been turning heads in the 2025 New York mayoral race, taking on incumbent Andrew Cuomo with the hope of becoming the city's first Muslim and Indian-American mayor.
The 33-year-old democratic socialist is the son of renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani. As his campaign gains momentum, Mamdani has cleverly woven Bollywood references and Hindi into his outreach to New York's diverse voter base.
Appearing on the Throwing Fits podcast, Mamdani was asked: "Is your filmmaker mother disappointed that you are filming all your social media content on an iPhone and in 16x9?" Mamdani laughed before revealing that, far from being disappointed, Nair is always interested in his campaign's video production.
"She asks me 'Why aren't you sending me cuts?'," Mamdani said. He added that his mother even jokes about the quality of his viral videos: "She was telling somebody, 'His stuff is so good, people are asking if I am making it.'"

Nair has openly celebrated her son's political rise. After Mamdani won his election to the New York State Assembly, she posted on X: 'And Zohran is in! Change is gonna come.'
Mamdani's unique campaign style includes one particularly viral video shot entirely in Hindi, amassing millions of views on social media. The video riffs off scenes and dialogues from Amitabh Bachchan's 1975 classic Deewar, with Mamdani cheekily reworking the iconic line "mere pass maa hai" to tell voters that they are what he has.
Beyond his creative campaigning, Mamdani has laid out an ambitious progressive platform: guaranteeing housing for all New Yorkers, eliminating cash bail, banning solitary confinement, fixing the MTA, ending workplace discrimination, and championing social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York City with his family at the age of seven and has called the city home ever since.

Donald Trump earned nearly $57.4 million from crypto venture in 2024
US President Donald Trump made nearly $57.4 million in 2024 from his cryptocurrency company, World Liberty Financial (WLF), according to a new government report. The earnings were revealed in a 234-page official US Government Ethics report released for the year ending December 31, 2024. The report stated that Trump earned this income through 'token sales' from the company, which is involved in the cryptocurrency business. The 79-year-old Republican is listed as the Co-Founder Emeritus of WLF, while his sons -- Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Barron Trump -- are also co-founders of the venture. The company was co-founded by Trump and Steven Witkoff, a well-known American real-estate investor and lawyer. According to the filing, Trump mainly owns the WLFI protocol and governance platform. He also controls the token treasury, digital wallets, and the intellectual property of the company. The document noted that as of the end of 2024, he had certain service agreements with the original founders of World Liberty Financial. The asset was listed under Miami, Florida. World Liberty Financial runs a stablecoin called the World Liberty Financial Token (USD1), which is tied to the US dollar. As of Sunday, June 15, 2025, the token was trading 0.35 per cent higher at $1, according to CoinMarketCap. According to exchange data, the token reached its all-time high of $1.01 on May 12, 2025, while its lowest level was $0.991 on April 16, 2025. The company claims that its mission is to make financial services more accessible by using open, blockchain-based infrastructure. 'Our goal is to create a fairer system where opportunity isn't limited by location, status, or permission,' says the WLF website. World Liberty Financial earns money through the sale of its token USD1 and other related products. Additionally, in March 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to create a 'Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a US Digital Asset Stockpile' as part of his push to position the United States as a global leader in digital asset strategy.

Minnesota killing: Why suspected shooter Vance Luther Boelter's wife was driving with weapon, cash, passports
Vance Boelter's wife Jenny was found with cash, weapons and passports. The two separate Minnesota shootings in which two politicians were killed and two were injured in what seemed like a targeted act allegedly by one Vance Luther Boelter took a surprising fresh turn after his wife was found driving with cash, ammunition, and passports in a car. Jenny Boelter, the wife of Luther Boelter, was detained for questioning from a traffic stop not very far from where the targeted attacks took place. Police have not yet arrested Boelter. His wife was only detained for a few hours and not arrested. The FBI has offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information on Vance Boelter. Where is Vance Boelter? Several questions remain unanswered Police made little progress in the targeted attacks on Democratic politicians in Minnesota. Boelter is believed to have left the place on foot after his two attacks. It is not know how police stopped his wife's car -- whether it was a routine check or whether she was being tracked. There's no explanation why Boelter's wife was carrying weapon, ammunition, cash and passports on her drive. The relationship between the husband and the wife is not clear because Vance is believed to be living at a different address which was raided by the police. Police found a list of nearly 70 targets left by Boelter, including Representative Ilhan Omar, Senator Tina Smith, and Governor Tim Walz. Abortion advocates and providers were also on the list. There were 'No Kings Day' posters in Boelter's based on which Republicans claimed Boelter is a Democrat and he also worked under Governor Tim Walz. But Boelter's childhood friend claimed that Boelter is a Trump supporter though he said that they did not speak about politics recently. Boelter has a list of accomplishments in his LinkedIn profile but it is not known how much of it is true. His LinkedIn profile identifies himself as 'Dr' Boelter. Boelter's profile hints at his previous ties to the Middle East and Africa. For example, he claims to be the CEO is the Red Lion Group, which is based in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
