Osamu Suzuki, singer Pankaj Udhas, Sushil Modi among Padma awardees
Former chief of Suzuki Motor late Osamu Suzuki, renowned singer late Pankaj Udhas, and former Bihar deputy chief minister late Sushil Kumar Modi were among the 71 prominent personalities conferred with Padma awards by President Droupadi Murmu on Monday.
Altogether, 139 distinguished persons were named for the country's civilian awards -- Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri -- on the eve of the 76th Republic Day on January 25.
While 71 of them were given the awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan's majestic Durbar Hall on Monday in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among others, the remaining will be conferred with the decorations at a separate function to be held soon.
Veteran actor Shekhar Kapur, Chairman of Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and AIG Hospitals D Nageshwar Reddy, violinist Lakshminarayana Subramaniam and Telugu Superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna, also known as Balayya, were the other prominent persons who were conferred with the Padma awards by the president.
Among the awardees, four received Padma Vibhushan -- Suzuki (Posthumous), Subramaniam, Reddy and Malayalam author and film director M T Vasudevan Nair (Posthumous).
A total of 10 distinguished personalities were conferred with Padma Bhushan. They include Udhas (Posthumous), Sushil Kumar Modi (Posthumous), Balakrishna, Kapur, former hockey player P R Sreejesh, Tamil actor S Ajith Kumar, chairperson of Zydus Lifesciences, Pankaj Patel, and Vinod Dham, an Indian-American engineer, who is widely known as the 'Father of the Pentium'.

Maruti Dzire is first sedan in India to get 5-star BNCAP safety rating
Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday said its Dzire has become the first sedan in the country to receive a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP), which was launched in 2023. BNCAP has so far tested at least 16 vehicles — all sport utility vehicles (SUVs) — under its crash safety evaluation programme, making the Dzire the first non-SUV to earn the top rating. Bharat NCAP follows globally benchmarked protocols and aims to raise safety awareness among Indian car buyers. The certification was presented by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. He said: 'It gives me immense pride to see made-in-India, high-volume mainstream cars achieve exemplary safety ratings under BNCAP. I congratulate Maruti Suzuki on securing a 5-star safety rating for the all-new Dzire.' In the same round of testing, Maruti's New Age Baleno received a 4-star rating. Gadkari lauded Maruti Suzuki's move to equip all its models with six airbags, calling it a 'significant stride' towards improving vehicle safety across segments. Maruti said it plans to equip all its passenger vehicles with six airbags as standard by the end of this year. Currently, 10 models — including the Alto K10, Swift, Brezza, and Grand Vitara — already offer six airbags across variants. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India, said: 'BNCAP brings to India stringent vehicle testing protocols that will help customers make informed decisions. We are honoured to receive this certification.' Takeuchi added that all 18 Maruti models are already equipped with the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as a standard feature — well ahead of regulatory requirements.

Govt working on draft framework to standardise default temperatures of air conditioners: Union Power Minister Manohar Lal
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) said the government is working on a framework to standardise the default temperatures of air conditioners, including those in automobiles, in the range of 20 to 28 Degrees Celsius. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday (June 10, 2025), Mr. Lal said the government is in talks with appliance makers and States on the subject to standardise AC temperatures. "Consultations are going on and once it's over, guidelines will be finalised accordingly. Some states have requested to consider the humidity they have while making the guidelines," Mr. Lal said without sharing further details. Asked if ACs in cars will also have such standardised temperatures, the Minister said the government is in consultation with automakers as well. The announcement comes at a time when India's peak power demand has been rising and hit 241 GW on June 9. Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal said the move is aimed at improving energy efficiency in the country. Reduction of even 1 degree helps saving 6% of energy. "There are crores of ACs in the country and every year new ones are getting inducted. So you can imagine the savings," he said. 'Discussions are underway' The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is engaged in preparing a framework to standardise default temperatures of air conditioners in the range of 20 to 28 Degrees Celsius to improve energy efficiency in the country. BEE, under the Ministry of Power, promotes the use of energy-efficient processes, equipment, devices and systems. It takes steps to encourage preferential treatment for the use of energy-efficient equipment or appliances. 'Discussions are underway on the subject but no final decision has been taken so far on the exact range of temperatures or any timeframe [to come out with the guidelines],' the official told PTI requesting anonymity.
