'Don't like girls wearing skimpy clothes': MP minister stirs new controversy with sexist remark
While drawing parallels between short speeches and short dresses, the state's Urban Development and Housing Minister said, 'In western countries, it's said that a woman who wears fewer clothes is considered very beautiful and a leader who speaks less is considered good. I don't believe in that. I believe a woman is a form of the goddess. She should wear nice clothes. I don't find women in short clothes attractive.'
'Sometimes girls come to take selfies with me. I tell them – 'Beta, come in proper clothes next time, then we'll take a photo,'' he added.
This is not the first time Vijayvargiya has made controversial statements about women in public.
At a Hanuman Jayanti event in Indore in 2022, he had said, 'I won't lie on Hanuman Jayanti... but girls these days wear such filthy clothes... We call women goddesses, but they don't appear that way... They look like Shurpanakha (a demoness from Hindu mythology). God has given you a beautiful body, at least wear decent clothes. Teach your children values.'

Assam: Two more arrested in crackdown on ‘anti-nationals', says CM Himanta Sarma
Two more persons were arrested in Assam in a crackdown on alleged 'anti-national and communal elements', Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. With this, the number of arrests in such cases in the state since the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam increased to 90. While Goalpara Police arrested Sanidul Islam for allegedly 'offensive social media posts on Lord Ram', Kamrup Police apprehended Saniur Rahman for 'inciting communal discord' through social media, Sarma said on social media. The attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Since the attack, the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam has been arresting persons accused of alleged 'anti-national' activities. On June 1, the chief minister said that 81 'anti-nationals' were put 'behind bars for sympathising with Pakistan'. On April 24, Sarma had said that the state would take action against anyone directly or indirectly defending the 'horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam'. This came after Opposition All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for claiming that the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack may have been the results of conspiracies by BJP leaders. Islam got bail in the sedition case on May 14, but was detained again under the National Security Act on the same day, PTI reported. The Act allows for long periods of detention without trial and suspends important rights of the accused person, including the right to legal representation and immediate information about the cause of the arrest.

‘Shows apathy': Allahabad HC raps UP government for delay in disbursing Kumbh stampede compensation
The Allahabad High Court on Friday said that the delay in disbursing compensation to the families of those who died during a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage site in Prayagraj showed the Uttar Pradesh government's 'apathy to the plight of the citizens', Live Law reported. A bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Sandeep Jain also directed the state government to furnish details of the deaths and medical handling of those who died or were injured between January 28 and the end of the pilgrimage. The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state was also told to submit details of the number of compensation claims it had received and settled, and those that are pending. The stampede had broken out at the Maha Kumbh on January 29 as a large number of pilgrims arrived to take a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar. The state government has said that at least 30 persons were killed and 60 others were injured, although several media reports have suggested that the actual toll could be significantly higher. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath had announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for those who died in the stampede. The court was hearing a plea filed by the husband of one of the persons who died. It expressed concern that the woman's body had been handed over to her family without a postmortem being conducted. The judges took note of the serious injuries reported on the woman, including a crushed rib cage, and questioned the lack of official documentation or communication with the family regarding the cause and circumstances of the death, Live Law reported. The bench directed that medical institutions and authorities in Prayagraj be made parties to the petitions and directed them to file affidavits disclosing details of all patients and dead bodies that may have been brought to the facilities and those dispatched by them between the incident and the end of the Mela. The bench was alarmed that the woman's body was handed over to the family in February but compensation was yet to be provided, according to Live Law.

Mohan Bhagwat to visit Kanpur amid RSS focus on going beyond caste
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat will arrive in Kanpur on Saturday on a two-day visit. He is scheduled to attend several meetings and visit two ongoing training camps. These camps aim to prepare volunteers aged 40 or below to work towards fostering a casteless and socially neutral environment. The RSS initiative comes at a time when the Central government is preparing for a caste-based Census, expected in 2027. The RSS's second-in-command, Dattatreya Hosabale, has already been in Kanpur for the past two days, providing training to volunteers on building a society that transcends caste distinctions. The first camp, known as Vikas Varg, is being held at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya School in Nawabganj. It is a regional (Kshetra-level) camp comprising RSS workers from various districts across eastern Uttar Pradesh. The second camp, Shiksha Varg, is taking place in Meharban Singh ka Purwa — the native place of Samajwadi Party ideologue Harmohan Singh Yadav. Part of his family is now seen to be moving closer to the BJP. This is the first time the Sangh has organised such an event in this traditional SP stronghold. RSS leaders said Bhagwat would visit and address both training camps. An open session will be held on June 10 at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya School, where people from all sections of society are expected to participate. During his previous visit to Kanpur in mid-April, Bhagwat had stressed that all castes deserve equal rights, urging swayamsevaks to unite diverse social groups under a singular Hindu identity. He had called on each RSS worker to reach out to every household, both urban and rural, to propagate the Sangh's message. The ongoing training camps are seen as preparing the ground for that grassroots campaign. Set to continue until June 10, the camps will culminate with deployment of trained workers across towns, settlements and remote villages to engage at least one member from every household and bring them into the Sangh's ideological fold. Addressing volunteers on Friday, Hosabale said, 'We must build a society that is not based on caste. The RSS has worked in this spirit for decades. As we enter the centenary year of the Sangh, we must remember that swayamsevaks have toiled selflessly—giving their time, money, and blood—to bring the organisation to where it stands today.' He said the RSS remains globally unique as a movement where workers have collaborated for decades without knowing one another's caste. In a separate interactive session with trainees, he discussed personal and academic concerns and reiterated that the RSS aims to mould ideal citizens who live by the principle of 'Nation First'. 'One's work is not merely for personal or familial benefit, but for national and global welfare,' he said. He recounted the lives of senior pracharaks like Bhaurao Deoras, Anant Ram Gokhale, and Ashok Singhal, who had given up promising careers to devote themselves entirely to the service of the nation. 'The Sangh may not engage in conventional activities,' he said, adding, 'but through spiritual discipline, it produces workers who will never abandon a cause that serves the nation. They will go wherever national interest demands and mobilise others to do the same.'
