Carlisle United's Charters set for play-off action with Murphy's Queens

Yahoo05-05-2025

Carlisle United's Taylor Charters is preparing for play-off action as he bids to help Peter Murphy's Queen of the South to promotion.
The Blues loan midfielder and his team-mates take on Cove Rangers tomorrow in the first leg of their Scottish Championship play-off semi-final.
Queens finished third in Scotland's third tier to set up a two-legged encounter with second-placed Cove.
The first leg is at Queens' Palmerston Park before the return encounter at the Balmoral Stadium on Saturday.
The winners will play either Stenhousemuir or Airdrieonians for a place in Scotland's second tier.
Charters, whose contract is up at Carlisle this summer, returned from injury to take his place in the Doonhamers squad on Saturday as Murphy's side drew 1-1 with champions Arbroath.
The versatile west Cumbrian came off the bench on the hour mark for his 12th loan appearance as Queens ended the league campaign unbeaten in eight games.
The Dumfries outfit, in Carlisle United legend Murphy's first season in charge, are bidding to return to Scotland's second tier after three years in League One.
Their squad also includes Cumbrian defender Matty Douglas and ex-Carlisle United man Brennan Dickenson, though the latter has been out of action for the last two months.
Also in Scotland, Annan Athletic face a two-legged play-off semi-final against Elgin City to try and retain their League One place. The Galabankies are away on Tuesday before the home second leg on Saturday, with Wullie Gibson's side hoping to reach the final against either Edinburgh City or East Fife.
On the United loan front, meanwhile, Ethan Robson and Gateshead will try to force their way into the National League play-offs on the final day this afternoon.
The north east club are eighth, a point outside the play-off places ahead of their last game against Southend United - who are seventh.
Gateshead, managed by ex-Carlisle coach Carl Magnay, will usurp Southend in the play-offs if they win the crunch fifth-tier game at the International Stadium.
Blues midfielder Robson has made three appearances for Heed but has missed out recently with injury.
Should Gateshead fail to make it into the promotion running, they will face Carlisle in league action next season for the first time since 1960. That was against the original Gateshead club that disbanded in 1973, with the current incarnation of the non-league club having formed in 1977.
In the battle for promotion to the National League, meanwhile, the National League North and South play-off finals are now confirmed.
Scunthorpe United will take on Chester in the northern final, while Boreham Wood will face Maidstone United in the southern final.
Scunthorpe got past Andy Preece's Chorley 4-2 in their northern semi-final with Chester winning 2-1 against Kidderminster Harriers, whose assistant manager is former United boss Neil McDonald.
In the southern semis, Boreham Wood defeated Torquay United 1-0, while Maidstone claimed a 2-1 win against Eastbourne Borough, managed by ex-Blues midfielder Adam Murray.

Phillies to Activate Zack Wheeler Off Paternity List to Start Monday Against Cubs

Phillies to Activate Zack Wheeler Off Paternity List to Start Monday Against Cubs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies, in the middle of losing eight of their last nine games, got a bit of good news Sunday morning. With Zack Wheeler missing his previous start due to the birth of his child, his next start was also in question. But after a new report, the Phillies ace is expected to be back on the mound soon. Advertisement According to Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia on Twitter/X, the Phillies plan to activate Wheeler off the paternity list and have him start on Monday, June 9th, against the Chicago Cubs. Wheeler rejoins the Phillies rotation which has gone through it's fair share of struggles lately. Across Jesus Luzardo's last two starts, he's allowed 20 earned runs. Christopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez have been solid, but neither has been dominant. Meanwhile, Wheeler's absence led the Phillies to trot out a bullpen game, which culminated in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Phillies have sorely needed Wheeler's presence in the rotation, and he's expected back for the series-opener against the first-place Cubs. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (45) throws a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth inning at Citizens Bank Ross-Imagn Images In 2025, Wheeler has been his dominant self once again. He has a 2.96 ERA with 6 wins and 2 losses, both coming against the Atlanta Braves. In his 12 starts, Wheeler's gone 76 innings, and struck out 94 while walking just 18. Advertisement He is once again a Cy Young candidate, and if it weren't for two bad starts against the Braves, he'd be the leading candidate for the National League Cy Young. Wheeler's return in the middle of a losing streak is a welcome sign. With Bryce Harper on the 10-day injured list, and Aaron Nola still out with a foot injury, the Phillies need a spark. Wheeler, the Phillies best pitcher, is a major boost to the team once he's back on the mound. Zack Wheeler Breaks Fanchise Record With 1,000th Phillies' Strikeout

Zack Wheeler Breaks Fanchise Record With 1,000th Phillies' Strikeout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Zack Wheeler has been nothing short of a phenomenal pitcher during his time in Philadelphia. Ever since the Phillies signed him before the 2020 season, Wheeler has been one of the top arms in all of MLB. With over 90 quality starts, a pair of All-Star appearances, and the National League strikeout crown in 2021, he's become a true ace at the top of the rotation. Advertisement During his latest start Monday night, the veteran righty added another huge accomplishment to his name. In the top of the 6th inning, Wheeler struck out Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker, becoming the fastest to ever record 1,000 regular season strikeouts in a Phillies uniform. Wheeler reached the milestone in 907.2 innings, beating out franchise greats such as Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, Cole Hamels, and more. As the above video shows, he got a nice standing ovation from the Philly faithful for his mark. Zack has accumulated 1,726 strikeouts in his entire career, putting him well within striking distance for 2,000 before he retires. That does not include the 77 more he's picked up during the postseason. Advertisement Wheeler currently sits at 10th all-time in total strikeouts among Phillies' pitchers, while teammate Aaron Nola is knocking on Hamels' door in 4th with 1,831. Zack Wheeler struck out seven Chicago Cubs hitters while allowing one run in six innings Monday Ross-Imagn Images Wheeler is currently in the second year of a three-year, $126 million deal that's made him the highest paid pitcher in baseball. Only two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto have higher annual salaries. At this stage in his career, the 35-year-old Wheeler has won plenty of respect throughout the game. But two things have eluded him to this point: a Cy Young Award, and a World Series Championship. Both remain in sight as this Phillies core tries to finish what they started seven years ago with the Bryce Harper signing. The Phillies had to score two in the 11th to the game after Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled in the top of the the inning and provide the Cubs with a lead. JT Realmuto immediately answered with a lead-off double to score Nick Castellanos. Bryson Stott and Otto Kemp then both reached on bunts, leading to Marsh's heroics. Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Philadelphia had lost its last two games against the Toronto Blue Jays then were swept over the weekend by in-state rival, and NL Central last-place bunch, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Advertisement The ending belied the quality of both starting pitchers. Matt Boyd gave up two runs, just one earned, while striking out eight over six innings for the Cubs. Zack Wheeler did one better, giving up just a single run in his six, striking out seven. Ian Happ hit a solo home run in the eighth inning off Phillies reliever Matt Strahm to tie the game. Kyle Tucker started the scoring in the first with a solo shot off Wheeler. The Phillies tied the game in the fourth when Realmuto plated on a run on a fielder's choice. Weston Wilson then gave Philadelphia the lead in the fifth with an RBI single, scoring Kemp.
