Bengaluru–Mangaluru High-Speed Corridor Takes Off: DPR Work Begins
Mangaluru: In a major boost to Karnataka's infrastructure ambitions, the much-anticipated high-speed expressway between Bengaluru and Mangaluru is one step closer to reality, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) preparation now officially underway. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta announced that the tendering process for the DPR has been completed by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the DPR work commenced as of April 30. The report is expected to take around 18 months to complete. "This is a transformative step for the region," said Chowta, who has been lobbying for the project over the past year. "Once realised, this corridor will not only reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Mangaluru drastically but also give a fillip to trade, tourism, and economic activity across southern Karnataka." The expressway, envisioned as a four-to-eight-lane high-speed road, is expected to run via Hassan district. When completed, it will slash travel time — currently 7 to 8 hours by road — to under 5 hours, depending on the final alignment and engineering specifications. Equally important, the all-weather corridor will improve safety, reduce congestion, and ensure seamless connectivity between Karnataka's hinterland and its vital port city. Chowta has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and officials at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for prioritising the project. He emphasised that it would unlock new growth opportunities for Mangaluru port, enhance the logistics backbone of the region, and strengthen industrial corridors extending to neighbouring districts. In a related proposal, the MP has suggested the preparation of a joint DPR for road and rail connectivity through the ecologically sensitive Shiradi Ghat. Located in the Western Ghats, this zone has long posed engineering and environmental challenges. A coordinated approach involving the NHAI and Indian Railways could streamline approvals from forest and environment ministries, Chowta said. He revealed that the Railways is already exploring a dedicated rail line through the Ghat section, and has urged the formation of a joint technical committee to examine the feasibility of an integrated road-rail corridor — a move that could reduce infrastructure duplication while protecting the fragile ecosystem. With political will and technical groundwork falling into place, the Bengaluru–Mangaluru Expressway could soon evolve from blueprint to blacktop — redefining coastal Karnataka's access to markets, jobs, and growth.

TMC MP Saket Gokhale publicly apologises to ex-diplomat, 10 months after Delhi HC order
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale on Tuesday issued a public apology to former diplomat Lakshmi Puri in compliance with a July 2024 Delhi High Court order about a series of defamatory comments that he had posted on social media in 2021. In the apology, Gokhale said that a series of tweets that he put about Puri on June 13, 2021 and June 23, 2021 contained 'wrong and unverified allegations' about property that she had purchased. — Saket Gokhale MP (@SaketGokhale) June 9, 2025 In July 2024, the Delhi High Court ruled that Gokhale made 'incorrect, false and untrue' allegations about Puri, including claims that she had purchased property in Switzerland with disproportionate assets. Puri had sued Gokhale, alleging that his social media posts were 'defamatory, malicious and based on false information'. In its verdict, the court had ordered Gokhale to apologise in a leading English daily and on his X handle. He was also directed to pay Rs 50 lakh in damages. Gokhale subsequently sought to recall the July 2024 order, arguing that it was issued ex parte, or in his absence, after his counsel stopped appearing. Meanwhile, Puri approached the High Court to demand that the order be enforced. She also filed a contempt of court case against Gokhale for not complying with the order. In response, Gokhale's lawyer proposed submitting an apology in a sealed cover until his plea challenging the High Court's order was decided. However, Justice Anish Dayal on May 9 dismissed the request and ordered Gokhale to issue a public apology in two weeks – or by May 23. After repeated non compliance, on May 28, the court issued a show cause notice to Gokhale asking why he should not be sent to jail for failing to comply with its orders. 'If you don't publish then we will issue orders of detention,' the court had said. Puri, a former assistant secretary-general at the United Nations and wife of Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, had filed the defamation case in 2021. She argued that her reputation was tarnished by Gokhale's 'reckless and false allegations' regarding an apartment in Geneva. Gokhale had questioned how Puri could afford the property on her income as a former Indian Foreign Service officer on deputation to the UN Conference on Trade and Development. He had also tagged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in his posts, calling for an Enforcement Directorate inquiry in the matter.

Pradhan hails 11 yrs of NDA rule as era of transparent and transformative governance
Hyderabad, June 10 (UNI) Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday said that the NDA government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has ushered in a transparent, decisive, and trustworthy governance model that has significantly transformed India's global standing. Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office in Nampally to mark the completion of 11 years of the NDA government, Pradhan recalled that prior to 2014, India was perceived as economically fragile and lacking international credibility. He said this image has undergone a remarkable shift, with India now standing as the fourth-largest economy in the world. 'The trust placed in Prime Minister Modi's leadership has been validated through consistent performance and transformative initiatives,' he stated. Pradhan highlighted key milestones achieved by the government, including the construction of four crore houses under various housing schemes and the commitment to deliver an additional two crore homes. He pointed to initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat and the widespread availability of affordable medicines through Jan Aushadhi Kendras as examples of the government's emphasis on accessible healthcare. He underlined the government's focus on youth and women empowerment, citing schemes like Lakhpati Didi and various skill development programmes designed to create self-reliant citizens. In the rural and agricultural sectors, Pradhan noted that Rs 3.7 lakh crore has been disbursed through the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. He also highlighted significant investments in agricultural infrastructure, the issuance of soil health cards, and enhanced support for small and marginal farmers. Speaking on infrastructure development, Pradhan said the past decade has seen substantial growth in railways, highways, airports, and digital infrastructure, laying a robust foundation for sustainable economic growth. He added that each rupee spent by the government is now creating five times the impact at the grassroots level, reflecting the effectiveness of the current economic model. Pradhan observed that India has emerged as a key destination for global investment, with international companies increasingly viewing the country as central to their expansion strategies. He lauded the southern states—Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala—for their leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship, and cited Hyderabad's emergence as a hub for Global Capability Centres (GCCs) as a symbol of India's growing role in the knowledge economy. On higher education, the Minister advocated for greater institutional autonomy and flexibility to help increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio from the current 27 per cent to 50 per cent by 2035. He stressed that trust and freedom for educational institutions are essential to meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy. Pradhan described the past 11 years under the NDA regime as a 'golden chapter' in India's governance history. He said while there is still more to achieve, the foundations laid so far have instilled public confidence and restored faith in India's democratic and developmental processes. UNI VV GNK
