128km, 24k cr: Plan To Declog Capital
New Delhi: In a significant push to alleviate the city's chronic traffic congestion, both Delhi govt and central govt have joined forces on a series of key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic snarls across the capital and its surrounding areas. The National Highways Authority of India will take up six major road projects passing through Delhi, decongesting 128km at a cost of Rs 23,850 crore. The plans include a 17km link from NH344M to Tronica City and a 65km eastern extension of Urban Extension Road II connecting the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Noida via Ghaziabad and Faridabad. A 5km tunnel from Mahipalpur to Nelson Mandela Marg and a 20km elevated corridor from AIIMS to Faridabad Road aim to decongest south and central Delhi. A new interchange at Kalindi Kunj and a 20km extension of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway complete the Rs 27,000 crore initiative. These projects will divert long-distance traffic from central Delhi, reduce pressure on NH44 and NH48, and improve regional connectivity with faster access to key expressways. The Kalindi Kunj interchange will ease movement between Delhi, Noida and Faridabad. Additionally, they will help manage traffic diversions and public communication to minimise disruption during construction. Coordination with police and municipal agencies for security and sanitation around the project site is another key area of support, an official said. Officials said that Delhi govt would also monitor project progress and ensure timely completion. "The collaboration between the Centre and state govt will enhance project efficiency, reduce delays, and ultimately benefit public infrastructure development in the city," he said. The initiative covers a total length of 128km and includes critical projects like the extension of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway (NE-5) from KMPE to UER-II, the eastern extension of UER-II connecting to Noida via Ghaziabad and Faridabad, and the construction of a 5km road tunnel from Dwarka Expressway to Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway extension, with a budget of Rs 4,000 crore, will provide seamless expressway connectivity for traffic from Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and Punjab towards Delhi, Gurgaon and Indira Gandhi International Airport. Similarly, the 65km eastern extension of UER-II is set to connect major roads and bypass Delhi's internal traffic hotspots by providing an alternative route to ease congestion on arterial roads such as Outer Ring Road and Sarai Kale Khan. Another project under close watch is the construction of a 5km underground road tunnel linking Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg. This Rs 3,500-crore tunnel aims to decongest key sections like Dhaula Kuan and Rao Tula Ram Marg by offering a direct, signal-free corridor between Dwarka/Gurgaon and south Delhi. Additionally, the elevated corridor stretching 20km from AIIMS to Mahipalpur Bypass and further extending to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, with a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, will act as a parallel corridor easing traffic load on NH48 and connecting major city routes more efficiently. Apart from these, there are plans for the construction of a crucial interchange at Kalindi Kunj intersection, a notorious congestion point linking Delhi-Noida Road and Agra Canal Road near Okhla Barrage. Govt officials said that the complete blueprint of the project was shared by Union minister Nitin Gadkari with CM Rekha Gupta, with officials given instructions to work in a synchronised way for the decongestion of the capital.

Delhi plans 5 km tunnel to link Shiv Murti and Nelson Mandela Road: Details
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the construction of a 5-kilometre-long tunnel connecting Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) with Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj). The high-capacity corridor, to be built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of ₹3,500 crore, is part of a broader ₹24,000 crore infrastructure package approved by the central government to improve traffic flow and reduce pollution in the National Capital Region. The proposed tunnel will feature two underground tubes, each comprising three lanes, offering a signal-free link between South Delhi, Dwarka, and Gurugram. The project is expected to break ground early next year and will be equipped with modern safety and operational features, including electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, CCTV surveillance, fire control measures, emergency exits, cross-passages, and central monitoring rooms. Speaking on the development, CM Gupta called the initiative a landmark step toward creating the 'Delhi of the future', noting that the tunnel will ease congestion on key bottleneck routes like Rangpuri, Mahipalpur, Nelson Mandela Road, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and NH-48. "This signal-free corridor will provide relief to millions of commuters and act as a critical link between multiple zones of the capital and the surrounding NCR," she said after a meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, where six key infrastructure projects for Delhi were given the green light. The tunnel is also poised to become a strategic connector between Central and East Delhi and several major highways and expressways: Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44 (Delhi-Chandigarh), NH-10 (Delhi-Hisar), NH-48 (Delhi-Jaipur), and NH-709B (Delhi-Dehradun). The route will further integrate with the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway, enhancing interconnectivity across regions. Dwarka Expressway tunnel progress The 5.1-km Dwarka Expressway tunnel, part of the larger 29-km expressway project connecting Mahipalpur in Delhi to Kherki Daula in Gurugram, is expected to open to the public soon following successful trial runs that began on May 29. Built at a cost of around ₹10,000 crore, the tunnel is equipped with modern safety features and is aimed at easing congestion near IGI Airport and NH-48. While several stretches of the expressway in Gurugram are already operational, the Delhi section, including the tunnel, is nearing completion. (With PTI inputs)

Delhi: Vasant Kunj tunnel work likely to start in 2026
The construction of a new underground tunnel connecting Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj in south Delhi is likely to begin early next year, with all clearances for the project in advanced stages, officials said on Sunday. The five-kilometre-long tunnel will redefine commute in the congested parts of south Delhi, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday. The tunnel will be built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. The tunnel is part of a larger infrastructure push under the 'double engine government', Gupta added. 'This tunnel is the foundation for the Delhi of the future. We are committed to making Delhi congestion-free and clean. The construction of this tunnel will reduce the burden on roads, eliminate traffic signals and save fuel,' Gupta said. The tunnel will provide a seamless, signal-free connection between south Delhi and Dwarka-Gurugram, easing pressure on key stretches such as Nelson Mandela Road, Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, and the chronically jammed National Highway 48 near Dhaula Kuan and Rao Tula Ram Marg, officials said. According to officials, the tunnel will consist of two underground tubes — one for each direction — with three lanes each, allowing for six-lane traffic movement beneath the city's surface. Apart from decongesting existing road networks, the tunnel is also expected to play a critical role in pollution mitigation by offering a faster, signal-free route and reducing idling time for vehicles, officials said. Gupta described the project as a symbol of effective Centre-state coordination, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari for their support. 'The national capital is now reaping the benefits of double-engine governance,' Gupta said. Earlier this week, the Delhi government had announced that six major infrastructure projects worth ₹24,000 crore have been approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Officials involved with the project said the tunnel will be equipped with modern safety and operational technologies, including electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, CCTV surveillance and emergency exits. Once constructed, the tunnel is expected to connect central and east Delhi to multiple major highways such as the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, NH-48 (Delhi-Jaipur Highway), and NH-709B (Delhi-Dehradun Expressway), via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway. In December 2023, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) had submitted a report to MoRTH saying that residents of south Delhi had raised concerns that the tunnel could have an adverse impact on forest and environment, and possibly damage houses in the area. According to a previous report of the ministry, the tunnel will pass through 5.825 hectares of area, which comes under the southern Ridge, and another 1.68 hectares of a deemed forest, for which permission has been applied under the Forest Conservation Act (FCA), 1980 for felling of 417 trees, against which compensatory afforestation will be done. In November 2022, the Delhi's Ridge Management Board (RMB) cleared the project, and further recommended it to the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which cleared it in June 2023, and the Supreme Court gave the final approval in October last year.
